The Evolution of Behavioural Traits This game aims to demonstrate how behavioural traits might evolve because of selection pressure. Imagine there is a gene that determines how fearful an individual is. This gene comes in two versions, ‘+’, which makes the individual more fearful and ‘-‘, which makes them less fearful. Further imaging that everyone in a population inherits two copies of this gene, one from each parent. The effect of the two copies is additive, so if a person inherits ++ then they are highly fearful, if they inherit – they experience little fear and if they inherit -+ they are somewhere in between. Highly fearful individuals tend to avoid taking risks and stay away from any situation that might pose a threat. Highly unfearful individuals engage in more risky and less avoidant behaviour. How to play You have a set of coloured cards that represent the gene pool. At the beginning of the game, there are equal numbers of fearfulness+ and fearfulness- genes. 1. Put the gene pool cards on the table face down, and mix them up well. This represents the genes being randomly mixed through mating. 2. Randomly select nine pairs of gene cards, and place them face up. These represent one generation of individuals. 3. On your record sheet, record how many of the pairs were ++, +- and --.

The Evolution of Behavioural Traits

This game aims to demonstrate how behavioural traits might evolve because of selection pressure.

How to play

You have a set of coloured cards that represent the gene pool.

3. On your record sheet, record how many of the pairs were ++, +- and --.4. Follow the rule on your ‘selection pressure’ card to remove individuals from the gene pool

(if applicable).5. Return the remaining individuals to the gene pool, and repeat from step 1.

Every 5 generations, work out the average number of ++, +- and -- individuals that have been born in the preceding 5 generations.

Selection Pressure Card

Your population lives in an environment where the only food source is half-way down some dangerous cliffs. Food can only be obtained by taking risks. Individuals who don’t take risks starve to death.

Each generation, remove all ++ individuals from the gene pool.

Each generation, remove all ++ individuals from the gene pool.

Selection Pressure Card

Your population lives in an environment that is full of camouflaged predators. Individuals who are not very cautious and do not try to avoid anything that looks suspicious get eaten.

Each generation, remove all -- individuals from the gene pool.
