symposium was organized to discuss the relations among technology, new media art, and contemporary art, and will bring together international curators, artists and art critics. The Seoul International Media Art Biennale was founded in 2000, and has continued to create discourses on the future of science and art, based on observations of the relations of new media, new technology and contemporary art, through exhibitions and education programs that take place every two years. According to the newly selected director of the 7th exhibition, Jinsang Yoo, the current situation of contemporary art and media art, in which issues have dried up, is one where a transition of paradigm is needed. In that context, he stressed the significance of the 7th Media City Seoul, 2012, which will be held exactly 100 years since the presentation of Marcel Duchamp’s ready-made work Bicycle Wheel (1913), which triggered a new paradigm in art history. Director Yoo particularly notes the word “individual,” as he says new media should be seen not just according to change in a technological context, but as a new environment for contemporary artists, because the “individual” artist stands at the contact point of contemporary art and media art, and because media is not a certain “code,” but material that is placed in between the “individual” and the “world.” Thus, the following three aspects will be discussed in the coming symposium: “First, how will we view the new environment being prepared by technical media science in the context of contemporary art?” “Second, today, after a century has passed since Duchamp, if we predict a transition to a new paradigm in art, what conditions will it contain?” “Third, what kinds of changes are being made in curating and the environment of creation concerning the work developed by new media art?” Through such essential questions, the coming exhibition intends to gain an identity different from existing biennales; and at a time when the social system is bringing tremendous change in terms of politics, culture and everyday life, due to changes in the technical environment of new media, the scheduled symposium will provide opportunities for discussion on what kinds of alternatives artists can present, how curators should respond, and how we should deal with technological environmental change in the context of contemporary art. 2011 International Symposium New Media Art : New Issues & Situations HOST Seoul Metropolitan Government ORGANIZER Seoul Museum of Art Date December 8th (Thursday), 2011, 1:00pm ~ 5:00pm Venue Seoul Museum of Art B1 Seminar Room Modulators Jinsang Yoo (Artistic Director of the 7th Seoul International Media Art Biennale),Gimo Yi (Curator of Seoul Museum of Art) Lecturers Jinsang Yoo (Artistic Director of the 7th Seoul International Media Art Biennale) Ruth Bain (Acting Director of Experimenta) Marc Gloede (Curator of Art Basel Film) Yukiko Shikata (Media Art Curator) Olof van Winden (General Director of Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMK) Panelists Namsoo Kim (Senior Researcher of the National Theater) Won-Kon Yi (Professor of Dankook University) On December 8, 2011, an International Academic Symposium will be held prior to the 7th Media City Seoul event to be held in September 2012. November 25 – December 25, 2011 The exhibition of internationally acclaimed photographer Candida Höfer is being held at the Kukje Gallery. This is the third showing of Höfer, following exhibitions in 2005 and 2008. The installation will include twelve large format photographs from her Neues Museum Berlin series of 2009, along with selected works from 2010. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1999, the Neues Museum is a monumental building defined by its magnificent Prussian architectural style. The building was constructed between 1841 and 1859 according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler, and was severely damaged during World War II, after which it was left deserted for approximately 60 years. The Neues Museum was finally renovated in 1997 by English architect David Chipperfield who won a competition for its rebuilding. It was officially reopened in 2009. Chipperfield’s restoration followed the building’s initial architectural pedigree with deliberate efforts to preserve the scars from Germany's multiplewars and the ensuing separation of East and West Germany. Höfer’s Neues Museum Berlin series presents photographs that allow the viewer to experience the building'sspaces, each of which occupies various points in time. Her work reflects our changing culture through the re- mnants of the past merging with a contemporary interpretation of historical architecture.
