When is used in superlative expressions:

(before only, first etc.)-Tom´s the only person I like at work.-Amsterdam is the first place where i would like

to live.

We use it with names of building, oceans, rivers, etc.

-I went to the Empire State Building when I was to New York.

-The Pacific ocean is one of my favorites oceans.

When we talk about countries whose name includes a noun.

-Have you been to the Czech Republic?-The Unit States have a lot of immigrants.

We use it to refer to different nationalities.

-People think the British are very reserved.-Are the Mexican men machistas?

We use them to refer to something for the first time.

-Have you heard that Paco bought a cat?- She has a red dress, her boyfriend gave it her

last week.

To refer to something unspecific.-How often do you use a computer?-Can you give me a cookie?

To classify things(Including people and their jobs).

-Felix is a Teacher.-Dog is an animal.

*REMEMBER: We use also the article a before a word that begins with a consonant sound.

-I would like to eat an apple.And the article an before a vowel

sound.-I´m going to take a shower.

We use it with plural countable nouns.

-I don't like pigeons.

We use it with uncountable nouns.-I love beer.

We use it with proper nouns.-Marie lives in Mexico.

We use it with languages and most place names/countries.

-French is spoken in some cities in Canada.

We use it with abstract nouns.-Love can be very difficult.
