Risen is a powerful word. In the context of the Bible, risen means to return to life again. That is the message of the Gospel proclaimed first by an angel to women who came to the tomb of Jesus to grieve: “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:6).

Here is a recap of the story. Jesus was crucified on the eve of the Jewish Passover. He was pronounced dead by sundown. Then, disciples claimed His lifeless body and placed it in a borrowed tomb.

Paranoid Jewish leaders appealed to the Roman authorities to seal the tomb and appoint round-the-clock guards. The Jews were afraid that zealous followers would steal the body of Jesus and fake a resurrection. As it turned out, stealing the body would not be necessary and guarding the tomb just added proof to the power of the story.

Early on Easter Sunday morning, devout women came to the tomb just as day was breaking. They were planning to anoint the body of Jesus with spices. While on the way, they realized that an obstacle stood between them and their Lord: a massive stone that cemented the tomb shut, accompanied by heavy guards. When they arrived at the tomb, to their amazement, the stone was rolled away. Angels now watched over the open tomb. The Roman guards were out cold, unconscious as if they were dead men.

The tomb was empty. Jesus was gone. The grief-stricken women were beside themselves. They presumed that Jesus was still dead. They concluded that those who had Him put to death had moved His body to a secret location. But, one of the angels said, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.”

The angels invited the women to examine the tomb where they saw that something truly miraculous had occurred. Later, when Peter and John visited the tomb, we learn that it was obvious someone had simply passed through the meticulously wrapped grave clothes and folded the cloth that covered Jesus’ face. You could say that this was an “inside

job.” The resurrection occurred by the power of the One inside the tomb, not by any outside force.

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed! Our faith is anchored in the empty tomb. The fact of the resurrection gives hope that we, too, can be risen with Christ.

When a person is risen with Christ, the old man or woman has died. The result is a new creation. The old life has passed away, and a new life is born.

How are we risen with Christ? The resurrection process begins when we die to self-will and our old sins in repentance. It is in repenting that we turn our lives over to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We are buried with Jesus Christ by baptism in His Name. We are risen with Jesus Christ when His Spirit fills us and makes us a new creation. The old soul we once were has been transformed into a new person who is fully alive.

When you are risen with Christ, there is no condemnation. Your record of sin is erased. (See Romans 8:34.)

When you are risen with Christ, you seek a superior spiritual life. (See Colossians 3:1.)

When you are risen with Christ, you experience spiritual resurrection and have the promise of an eternal resurrection. (See 1 Corinthians 15:20.)

When you are risen with Christ, you are changed from the inside out. Just as the resurrection of Jesus occurred inside the tomb, the transformation that you experience happens first, on the inside.

Risen is a powerful word, and an even more powerful force in our lives. But, if the resurrection is not experienced and expounded, it will lose its effect on us. In order to ensure that the story of the resurrection was not lost, a special Easter greeting was coined in churches around the world. Upon meeting a fellow Christian, the first would exclaim, “Christ is risen,” to which the second would reply, “He is risen indeed!”

This Easter Sunday, let’s celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Then, let us also celebrate our resurrection from our old sinful life. Jesus Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!
