I created these guides to introduce popular eBay Artists and Genres that are very

    successful and very profitable niches.

In each guide I have chosen an artist or genre and then provided you with all the data that I typically gather when researching a vintage & antique print niche.

The guides consist of the following:

A short bio of the artist or a description of the selected print genre. A bibliographic listing of the books that the artist illustrated or that

    particular genre appears.

Recent successful eBay closed listings featuring several different sellers, different sources and different illustration types (if applicable).

Ideas for Additional Income Streams. Each of the successful eBay listings featured in this guide have screenshots of the

actual closed listings, the print/plate that was sold, a description of the particular auction(s), a screenshot of the Addall listing showing the actual source and a

    potential profit calculation.

For the Additional Income Streams, I focus (mostly) on using digital images to create physical products. Each product that is shown in this guide has been successfully sold on eBay by that particular seller.

Please note that when using digital content of any kind, it is your responsibility to

research whether or not the item is indeed in the public domain and not under copyright protection. Determining an item’s copyright is a complicated matter that is determined by the date of publication, the country of origin and the country that

you will be selling your items from.

The author does not guarantee or warranty that the reader will have the same or similar final eBay selling prices, but has performed due diligence and research to verify these prices are typical final realized prices.

  • Arthur Rackham - Artist - Children’s Literature

    Arthur Rackham (19 September 1867 –

6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator.

Rackham was born in London as one of 12 children. At the age of 18, he worked as a

clerk at the Westminster Fire Office and began studying part-time at the Lambeth

School of Art. In 1892 he quit his job and started working

for The Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. His first book illustrations

were published in 1893 in To the Other Side by Thomas Rhodes, but his first serious commission was in 1894 for The Dolly

Dialogues, the collected sketches of Anthony Hope, who later went on to write

The Prisoner of Zenda. Book illustrating then became Rackham's career for the rest

of his life. In 1903 he married Edyth Starkie, with

whom he had one daughter, Barbara, in 1908. Rackham won a gold medal at the

Milan International Exhibition in 1906 and another one at the Barcelona International Exposition in 1912. His works were included in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Louvre in Paris in 1914. Arthur Rackham died 1939 of cancer

in his home in Limpsfield, Surrey.

Rackham invented his own unique technique which resembled photographic reproduction; he would first sketch an outline of his drawing, then lightly block in shapes and details. Afterwards he would add lines in pen and India ink, removing

the pencil traces after it had dried. With color pictures, he would then apply multiple washes of color until transparent tints were created. He would also go on

to expand the use of silhouette cuts in illustration work. Typically, Rackham contributed both color and monotone illustrations towards the

works incorporating his images - and in the case of Hawthorne's Wonder Book, he also provided a number of part-colored block images similar in style to Meiji era

    Japanese woodblocks.

Note that this particular seller is including not only an embossed

“Certificate of Authenticity” but they are also double matting their prints prior to shipment. These particular prints are from the 1920 version of

the book which only contains 16 color plates.

These two books above are the 1908 version of the book, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” which as stated in the description contains 40 plates as

opposed to the 16 plates found in the later edition shown below. Also note that these particular plates are attached to a heavier board and

thus do not require additional matting, a fact that the second seller, featured on the previous page, clearly took advantage of.

    Cost Per Plate:

($300 divided by 40) is $7.50 *Potential Profit:

    ($37 multiplied by 40 less $300) is $1180

    Cost Per Plate:

    ($125 divided by 16) is $7.81

*Potential Profit: ($37 multiplied by 16 less $125) is $467 * This figure is intended only as a guide and ignores the cost of materials, shipping the book to your address and all eBay/PayPal fees.

Note that although I show two books below, the more expensive book is provided as part of this example

because it details the exact number of plates that are included in this

    particular printing of this book.

Cost Per Plate: ($45 divided by 47) is $0.96

*Potential Profit: ($45 multiplied by 47 less $45) is $2070

The calculation below is for the

German edition of Cinderella listed on the previous page.

Cost Per Plate: ($48.44 divided by 50) is $0.97

*Potential Profit: ($46.00 multiplied by 50 less $48.44)

    is $2251.56

I purchased the book listed on this page ($21.25) as it was local and I

was able to examine it prior to actually taking final ownership.

After viewing the contents of this edition as well as the overall

condition of the silhouettes, I decided to purchase the book.

The total number of plates/illustrations that were in saleable

condition are used in the calculation below:

Cost Per Plate: ($21.25 divided by 45) is $0.47

*Potential Profit: ($46.00 multiplied by 45 less $21.25)

is $2048.75 * This figure is intended only as a guide and ignores the cost of materials, shipping the book to your address and all eBay/PayPal fees.

Getting started on a limited budget…. This 1960 edition of “Wind in the Willows” contains 12 Rackham plates.

Buying a more recent book costs very little as this example shows but you can still make sales and is a great way to ease yourself gently into this business

    with a tiny investment.

You might only break even after your fees but you will be building your confidence and your feedback and at the same time gaining valuable experience of matting your prints, writing compelling titles and descriptions

    and looking after your buyers.

These skills and your trading track record will be invaluable when you are ready to take the next step and purchase a more valuable and profitable book.

Cost Per Plate: ($12.75 divided by 12) is $1.06

*Potential Profit: ($7.60 multiplied by 12 less $12.75) is $78.45

This is a large modern reproduction printed on canvas.

Or how about an art poster?

These are brand new 13x19 inch posters and this seller has 26 different Rackham posters in their store selling multiple copies of each!

You could also create your own “Print On Demand” (POD) book

featuring Rackham images as a compilation of your favorite images or from a single title, such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

This seller is using Rackham images to adorn jewelry!

One additional income stream idea not to be overlooked is “Ex Libris

Plates”. These are the stickered Name/From the Library Of/Ex Libris plate that you sometimes find in the front of a book.

Many of these were created by highly sought after artists who were commissioned by private library owners. These plates can prove to be

very valuable and should NOT be discarded without first researching the plate genre, library owner and artist on eBay.

Don’t forget to look out for “Ex Libris” bookplates designed by Rackham. These are very collectible in their own right (these could be attached to

the inside of ANY old book you buy!)
