Early life & Education

• He was born on September 13, 1951 in Seattle, Washington.

• His parents are Richard and Ellinor Wolfe, who were both commercial artists in Seattle.

• Art Wolfe graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Washington.

• Completed assignments for National Geographic magazine after he graduated.

• Is currently 63 years of age

Career • Is best known for his colored pictures of wildlife, landscapes, and native

cultures.

• Has a documentary TV show called Travels to the Edge with Art Wolfe.

• Has released more than 65 photo books, instructional videos, and photographic techniques.

• Is apart of the group Royal Photographic Society, and is on the advisory boards for the Wildlife Conservation Society, Natures Best Foundation, and Bridges to Understanding.

• Is apart of International League of Conservation Photographers

Art Wolfe’s inspiration is M.C. Escher. The book Wolfe wrote called Migrations, pays homage to the mesmerizing pattern works of M.C. Escher.

MigrationTaken of a herd of Grant’s Zebras during their

migration in southern Kenya.

The light used is natural. I think the lighting is good for this picture. The main subject of the photograph is zebras and the pattern of all of them put together. I can tell because the whole photo is zebras. The story of this photo is zebras migrating, and traveling in a herd. I chose this photo because it is one of Art Wolfe’s most famous photograph, but also got him in a lot of trouble taking this photo. And also this photo is the cover photo for his book Migration.

Photo Critiques

Taken in Antarctica in December 21, 2010. He took it while going to Antarctica during his show Travels to the Edge with Art Wolfe.

The lighting is natural. The camera is facing right towards the seal. I like the lighting its not bad, but I would prefer if it was a little bit more lighter so that it would be easier to see the seal. The main subject of the photo is the seal, I can tell because the seal is so close to the lens to where the penguins and the ice is all back more. I don’t think there is a story to it, its just showing Antarctica, the penguins, water, and seal, but no story to it.

The lighting is natural. The main subject of this photo is the mountains, all the mountains and fog. I can tell because the photo is a photo of just the beautiful nature. For me the reason I like this photo so much is because of all the fog and how dark the photo is. It makes the photo look very dramatic. There is no story to this photograph, Art Wolfe just took a beautiful photo up in the mountains. I chose this photo because I loved it, and it very dark and with the fog also It just makes it a very good photograph.

Huang Shan

The lighting is natural. I think the lighting on this photo is very good. It shows the picture off very well. The main subject is the river and the water flowing. I love the look of this photo it kind of looks blurring, but its good for this photo. The texture is great in this photograph, it looks somewhat like a painted picture, because of the way that the water if flowing, and the photo is a little blurring, it makes the water look like brush strokes. I chose this photo because of the way it looked and because of the texture. It is a very beautiful photo.

Stacked boats

The lighting is natural. I really like the lighting because of all the colors of the boats, if the lighting would have been really bright then the boats would have been to bright of a color. But then if the lighting was to dark then it would be hard to tell if the boats were even all different colors. The main subject of the photo is all the boats, this photo is very abstract. I can tell the main subject are the boats because that is what the whole picture is, it is tons of small row boats stacked on each other. For me what made the photo so striking is the lighting and the colors of all the different boats. What else made this photo very striking to me is the abstract of the photo. I chose this photo because it is a popular abstract photo of his. It is not one of his popular ones in general, but in his abstract collection n this one is pretty popular.

The photo is taken of Guanacos

Lighting is natural. I really like the lighting in this photograph, the darkness of it with the sun in the back reflecting onto the animals makes it very dramatic and very pretty. The subject are the photo is the Guanacos. I can tell because they are placed in the center of this photo. I love the lighting in the picture. Using rule of thirds in this photo can also show you the subject of the photograph because if you make this into rule of thirds and make it into 9 squares then the middle squares are where the Guanacos would be placed. I chose this photo because I really liked it. It had amazing lighting and that really drew me into the picture.
