Art Literacy Art Literacy Artist of the month May 2013 The Pueblos Our last art study is of the Pueblos. The Pueblos are a group of Native Americans who live in a high desert region of the South Western United States. They have lived there for hundreds of years. Today, many of the Pueblos still live in terraced, flat roofed houses much like the ones of their ancestors. The Pueblos are famous for these villages and that is where they got their name; their villages are also called Pueblos, which is Spanish for “town”. One group of the Pueblos is called the Zunis (zoo’-nees). Although Zunis belong to the Pueblo family, they speak their own language and have customs and beliefs that make them unique. We will study and discuss Pueblo form and design in pottery and produce pottery- -inspired pictographs. Kids will use oil pastels to draw symbols on crushed paper and glaze it with water colors. Annual

Student Art Show & Science Fair 2013

We hope you were able to join us for the Science Fair and Art Walk. During the week, volunteers worked diligently to review K-3 Science projects and set up the event, while other volunteers mounted student art work on the school walls. The night of the event, additional volunteers reviewed 4th and 5th grade science projects and managed the tear down and clean up. THANK YOU to all the people that made this event such a wonderful success. A special thank you goes to the Science Fair Chair, Danielle Krakowiecki who worked with school staff to organize all the moving parts, printed and organized table labels & awards, and provided the wonderful Paw Medals for the students. Another round of applause goes to Nadia Pasha and Christie Emerson for their brilliant art display in the hallways. If you were at the school last week, you undoubtedly saw one or both of these wonderful ladies hanging the student art. For those of you that are not familiar with their work, they facilitate the art program for our students. This is a great time to introduce yourself and find a way to help continue their amazing efforts to infuse art into the curriculum.

Spring Cougar Apparel

The deadline for turning in the orders for Cougar Apparel has arrived! If you haven't turned an order in and still want something, please get your order in by 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. An order form can be found on Big Tent (in color) or we have included one at

the end of the newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact Krissa Ferguson at [email protected]. She is happy to help you figure out what size might be the right one for your child (or yourself!). Don't forget, we are offering tie dye this spring!!

Scrip

The last Scrip order brought in

$23.84 in profit for our school. Scrip gift cards are perfect for gift giving (think Teacher Appreciation, Mother’s Day, Graduation, Father’s Day) as well as for your own personal shopping needs (groceries, gas, sporting goods, home and garden improvement) so please consider supporting our Scrip program. The next Scrip order date is Monday, May 6 with just a few more order dates left this school year. If you wanted to purchase Teacher Appreciation Scrip dollars for your favorite teacher or staff member, late orders are still welcome... we just don’t guarantee disbursement in time for Teacher Appreciation week spending.

Staff Appreciation

Teacher Appreciation week is coming up; the first week in May from the 6th to the 10th. At Cooper Mountain Elementary, we embrace this opportunity to celebrate all teachers and staff at Cooper Mountain Elm. This year we will be carrying on with some favorite traditions of student gifted flowers planted out front for the teachers, a catered lunch, scrip gift opportunity, parent-provided potluck, and a school gift from the PTO. If you have a special talent or service you would like to volunteer in appreciation for Cooper Mountain's teachers and staff we would love to hear about it. Please email Christie Emerson at [email protected].

Box Tops

We began our final BOX TOPS contest for this school year on May 5th. Please continue to collect and turn in your BOX TOPS through Jun 7th to earn a Sweet Treat for your Class. Ask your neighbors, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles to save them for you. You can turn in your BOX TOPS to the main collection box located at the front of the school. Please be sure to write your teacher’s name on the envelope and/or bag you when you turn in your BOX TOPS, otherwise your class will not get credit for your submission.

Volunteer Appreciation Lunch

The Volunteer Appreciation Lunch on April 17 was a wonderful opportunity to partake in great food (prepared by the staff) and enjoy the company of the Cooper Mountain Staff. The gym was colorfully decorated with posters, prepared by the students, and facilitated by the teachers.

Great things happen when we all come together. It’s clear that every minute you give to enhance our students’ learning experience is genuinely appreciated!
