Critical Thinking: Photography, Grades 10-12

ART HISTORY AND CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS

The historical significance of each art project will be an integral part of every lesson throughout the academic school year. Students will be able to: ● Discuss historical significance of photography in our lives ● Compare and contrast themes in photography using historical and cultural context ● Research and discuss specific photographers and how they have influenced culture and society ● Research and discuss specific careers associated with photography ● Review the types of tools and media that will be reviewed and used ● Master critiquing skills and strategies when looking at and talking about photography ● Demonstrate and discuss how diverse cultures have used photography to influence contemporary thought ● Research & discuss photo movements that inspire other arts forms ● Apply research skills and strategies to create a historically accurate document comparing and contrasting two photography movements

Students will be able to recall and refer to at least 3 significant aspects in photography from 3 projects.

Students will create at least 5 photographs in their own style and one inspired by a notable photographer at the

mastery level. Students will complete 1 research-based project at the mastery level

ASSESSMENT AND PORTFOLIO REVIEW

Students will be able to: ● Complete all projects that may have been assigned ● Participate in a collaborative artistic display ● Explain and discuss how they created their artwork ● Relate and reference their artwork to art history ● Reflect on the meaning or their feelings about their work verbally and through writing ● Explain how their student portfolio was assessed

Students should have produced at least 8 photography projects for their portfolio indicating mastery of all curriculum components of Photography. Students will have completed and included their sketchbooks/reflective journals as part of their portfolio. The portfolio should include evidence of the techniques, concepts, cultural connections, art history, and thinking skills developed through instruction over the year.

Pinhole Cameras, Cyanotypes and

Objectives:

Students will ●Research, observe, analyze, and discuss the

work of various photographic artists

● Identify and discuss influencing factors of at

least three pieces

● Research and discuss the beginning history

of black and white photography and image

transfer

● Observe, analyze and discuss the three

building blocks of photography: light, time and

subject matter

● Explore and apply a variety of specialized

digital techniques and filters when taking
