ATTENDANCE POLICY:

As a studio class, it is imperative that you attend each session. Students should come to class with the required tools and supplies and be prepared to work. If you arrive late or leave early, it may be assumed you were not in class that day and you will be counted absent. Class time is not to be used to purchase materials. Excessive absences, more than 4, will be penalized with a lower grade or a grade of "F". This includes excused absences. Excessive lateness or leaving early will also contribute to grade penalties, two of which will equal an absence. All students are responsible for information and assignments given out in class and in lectures and reading assignments. An absence does not excuse you from this responsibility. If you are absent you will need to contact a classmate or the instructor to find out what material has been covered and what assignments issued. Each absence over the allowance will equal a one letter grade demerit/reduction from your final course grade.

GRADES:

Grades are based on work ethic, completion of assignments, craftsmanship, participation and a willingness to explore. There are four major projects and several minor assignments. Your final grade will be determined by averaging these scores. Grades use a weighted format. More weight is given towards major projects/assignments. What to expect: Completing an assignment on time and within assignment criteria will constitute an average grade (C). This means you must strive well beyond the standard to achieve a grade that is above average or in the excellent range. Expect a lower grade if the project is turned in late. It is the responsibility of the student to deliver projects on time, making them available for critique and/or evaluation. Final Grades for this class will be A, B, C, D, or F . No + or grades will be given. A = 90100 (Excellent Range) B = 8089 (Above Average) C = 7079 (Average) D = 6069 (Below Average) F = below 60

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT:

No plagiarism. It is expected that all work you present for this course be your own. The University policy for academic misconduct will be followed. Any student suspected of violating the academic misconduct policy will be required to meet with the instructor to discuss the situation. If you are found responsible for committing an act of academic misconduct, you will receive a grade of “F” for the course.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: • Responsibility : The student is responsible for their performance in this course. As a studio course, all assignments should be given an amount of sweat equity that will deliver successful

resolutions to the problems.

• A Solid Work Ethic: Each student should put full effort into each assignment. Procrastination can very easily lead to an unfinished project. Time to refine and polish a project can be found if

a student puts thoughtful planning and a strong effort into the forefront and throughout a project.

• Homework/Outside of class hours! Projects require attendance outside of class. Use the facilities during available open studio hours. It is crucial to put in at least 6 to 8 hours of work

time outside of our class schedule. Schedule outside studio time into your weekly calendar. Open studio hours will be posted.

• Participation: Verbal and physical participation are expected in this class. Students should prepare themselves to discuss projects and assignments. Students should be prepared to work

in class during work sessions. This means they should have on hand; materials and tools

needed for studio work.

• The Completion of all Assigned Projects is required for credit, as well as their being presented on the day of critique. Failure to show up for critique, with or without your project, will

result in a drop of a letter grade. It is essential that each student be present at and engaged in

all critiques. The completion of all projects on time, commitment, growth, effort, regular

attendance and willingness to participate in discussions and critiques are criteria used for

evaluating your grade.

• Clean up: Clean up is mandatory. This is a shared classroom. Everyone is expected to participate in cleaning the classroom and work areas each class session. It is very important

that the studio is kept orderly and clean, out of respect for your instructors and peers.

Neglecting to clean up after oneself will be used as a constituent in assessing grades.

• Do Not Touch: Please refrain from touching work that is not your own. Projects, in its many stages of development, can be fragile. If you need to move someone else's work please be

gentle.

• Respect: In order to create and maintain a positive and productive environment in the classroom, it is essential that each person treat their peers and the instructor in a respectful

manner. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

CELL PHONES: This is a studio/lecture course, please be considerate of your instructor and peers. All cell

phones must be turned to silent mode before entering the classroom. Please do not make or receive calls, check messages, or text message while you are in the classroom. You may be

asked to leave the classroom for such class disruptions.

FIELD TRIP: WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Criteria for Two Field Trips”:

* Mission: Review two 3Dimensional Compositions you visit during this semester. Write

Two Paragraphs for each assignment.

A. Cover Sheet: Your name

Class name/number/ MW or TTH

Semester and Year

Instructor’s name

B. Write a minimum of two Paragraphs on the subject. There are many ways to write a review on an art piece just as there are many ways to develop

an artistic composition. The goal here is to develop a language that addresses the truth that can

be found in the work. Reviews of artwork can be found in art magazines and websites. These

are good examples to assist in developing your writing skills. As you write, speak on how the

piece inspires, evokes or fuels ideas and concepts. Look at this assignment as a exercise in

developing your own artist statements in the future. Assignments should be presented in a Word

document or a shared Google Doc. Rich Text Formats (.rtf) formats will not be accepted.

Title and Artist: Concept:

What is the piece be about?

What is the artist be trying to express?

What visual/design elements and principles is the artist using, Why? Process and Materials:

What process and materials did they use (your theory and opinion)?

Why do you think they used these materials?

Ask yourself, is the process and materials used relevant to the concept of the work. Do the clues of process seem intentionally apparent, what are they?

How are they relevant?

If so, how does process add to the concept?

Critique: How does the work evoke ideas?

What elements or components support these ideas?

C. Images: Incorporate in your assignment drawings, photocopies or photographs of subject(s).

Field trip locations: Below is a list of possible field trip locations.

WKU Campus, buildings, galleries and museums

Museums, Kentucky Museum on campus, Frist in Nashville, Cheekwood in Nashville

Craft Gallery or Design Studios, 2nd Floor Galleries FAC, Downtown Bowling Green

D. Build your vocabulary, strengthen your statements. Refrain from using “I”, “me” and “my” statements:

Use statements that support your interpretations of the work.

Cut to the chase...

Refrain from an introduction that speaks about the assignment or field trip.

Start with a title, description, or location.

Elaborate on how context, content, and process add to the concept

Presentation: Below are some strategies that will help and challenge your abilities to express in words the

concepts of the work you visit.

Step away from the work. Speak directly about what the work exposes to its

audience. Try to look at the work and define what you see. Sometimes the

simplest observation carries a bulk of content. What are solid truths that the

viewer can gain from the work? What are obvious connections that allow the

viewer to understand the meaning of the work?

Write with conviction and truth. If it is not there, do not write about it. Otherwise, it

will not make sense.

Separate your identity from what you see. Develop your statement without the

use of self declarative statements. Keep them at a minimum if they are

necessary. Try not to use I, me, and my statements. This challenge will assist

you in stepping away from the work, strengthening your analysis and statements

of the work, not to mention develop your vocabulary.

Eliminate redundancies.

Expand your vocabulary. Do not to use the same word over and over again. Use

a thesauruses.

Stay away from runon sentences. Use periods for pauses, make complete

thoughts, use fewer commas. Develop grammar strategies, use proper tenses.
