Dear Arrowhead Families, Everything is off to a great start for the 2010-2011 school year! I would like to take a moment to welcome all of our students, families, and staff to our Arrowhead Family. We are very pleased to once again be rated as an “Excellent” school by the Ohio Department of Education. Additionally, this year the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools are rated “Excellent with Distinction.” We could not earn these designations without the hard work of students and staff, and the support of our families and communities. Thank you for all that you do to make Arrowhead such a special place to be! September shaping up to be a busy month! Information will be coming home shortly about our School Picture Day which is September 28. This year we will be utilizing Ohio School Pictures district wide. We believe that you will like the level of quality and service that they provide. OSP also offers a la cart pictures and online ordering which I know many of you will like. Our PTA membership drive, as well as our Fall Fundraiser, are both underway. Please consider supporting our PTA by becoming a member. There are many opportunities for parents to volunteer and get involved in our school. Finally, this year our theme is “Students Blossom and Grow at Arrowhead.” This naturally ties in to many of the great things we do with our Nature Zone and in the classroom on a daily basis. The book Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden is the book that we are using throughout the year to tie in with this theme. Whether it is learning a new concept in math, reading a new favorite book, using clay for the first time in Art, or caring for our newly hatched chickens in the Nature Zone, your child is going to have many opportunities to blossom and grow this year. We are very fortunate to have such a nurturing staff and wonderful support coming from our parents and community. I hope that you will take time this year to appreciate all of the small and special moments, and watch your child make some amazing growth physically, academically and socially. Best wishes ~ Mr. La Badie ARROW H EAD LINES Arrowhead Primary School 1600 Raleigh Blvd. Copley, Ohio 44321 330-664-4885 SEPTEMBER 2010 ISSUE 1 From our Principal Mr. Andrew La Badie INSIDE 2 PTA President News 1st Vice President News 3 ACME Receipts Campbell’s Soup Labels Greenhouse News PTA Meeting Schedule Newsletter/Website 4 Summer Garden Club News 5 Nature Zone News Mark That Calendar! 6 News from the Coop 7 Guidance Goodies 8 Arrowhead PTA Online Bus/Carpool/Dismissal Change Forms WELCOME BACK! Welcome back to a new year! As a PTA we are excited for the many things we have going on at the school thisyear. I’m not going to elaborate on these activities for two reasons: First, while I am universally accused of talkingtoo much, I just don’t like putting words on paper. Second, and more importantly, I do not want to “steal the thun-der” of the individual committee members who will present details of their PTA committee elsewhere in this andother newsletters throughout the year.

Forms have gone out to members for volunteer sign-up, but please feel free to call me anytime if you have questionsor comments about the PTA, or just want to help with something.

Let’s have another great year at Arrowhead Primary School!

Please join the PTA and come get involved with the school. Please call 330.666.9494 or email me with any [email protected].

< 15 chicks hatched on 9/13/10. There may be more hatching in the next few days!

NEWS FROM THE COOPPaula Mularcik

The chickens have arrived at Arrowhead! We are enhancing ournature zone with chickens this school year. This will provide fora wonderful learning opportunity for our students. The chickeneggs were placed in an incubator in the library on August 24th.They are expected to hatch the week of September 13th! Initially, the chickens will reside in the school lobby for a few days andthen will move to the greenhouse for about 6 weeks. After thatthey will be big enough to move into the coop. The chickencoop was purchased through donations from The SummitCounty Farm Bureau and the Arrowhead PTA. The chicken yardwas constructed this summer by Alex Stopar, a Copley HighSchool student, as his Eagle Scout Project. Check out the naturezone bulletin board across from the music room for up to dateinformation on the nature zone and chickens.

Each classroom will be responsible for helping to care for thechickens over the course of the school year. (Teachers will signup their class for one week time slots a few times during theyear.) When your child's class has a turn coming up, you willreceive a letter with the details of what the children will be doingto care for the chickens. Three to five students from the classwill be sent down to the office at a certain time each day to meetMr. La Badie or another staff person or a parent volunteer to goout to the chicken coop to feed and water the chickens andgather eggs once they start to lay eggs(egg laying will begin in

March). There will be a chicken check list of “things to do”when the students go out to care for the chickens. When thechickens are in the coop, the students will have to put on specialboots before entering the chicken coop area. Gloves will bemade available to those who wish to wear them. Hand washingwill be done before and after each student handles anythingrelated to the chickens. If for some reason you would rathernot have your child participate in this program, the letter that issent home right before your child's class will be caring for thechickens will have an “opt-out” section to fill in and return ifthose are your wishes.

We plan to have a chicken naming contest along with weighingthe chickens periodically to be able to watch their growth. Wealso will record the number of eggs gathered each day. We willneed parent/student help on the weekend days and holidays. It will take about 20 minutes of your time if you sign up to helpon one day of a weekend. Detailed instructions will be givenfor what you have to do when you come in to help with thechickens and it will be fairly simple (feed, water, and play withthe chickens). If you would like to help on this committee, please contact Paula Mularcik at [email protected].

Next time you are at school stop out to see the chicks and thechicken coop.

FOR A GREAT CAUSEPLEASE READ…My name is Robbie Deppisch and I am in fourth grade. As most of you know,I have been saving the tabs of aluminum cans for almost three years now, todonate to Akron Children’s Hospital. The hospital turns the tabs in for money topurchase hand-held games, books and puzzles for the kids to play while theyare on a dialysis machine, sometimes for many, many hours. PLEASE, PLEASE,when drinking from an aluminum can, pull off the tab and put it in a bag andsend it to Arrowhead School with your child, to my attention. Please get yourfriends and families involved! This summer, I spoke with local businesses, andthey too are helping me collect tabs from their employees/friends/family. LETSCONTINUE TO COLLECT POUNDS AND POUNDS OF TABS TO HELP THESE KIDS!The last day to collect tabs is the last day of school! I THANK YOU AND THECHILDREN AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL THANK YOU, FOR HELPING!
