As of March 1st 2012 we can now accept card payments.

Welcome to the May edition of Around Rugby! Can you believe it’s May already?

Most of us can look forward to two bank holidays this month; May Day on 6th and Spring Bank Holiday on 27th. We also celebrate Wesak (Buddha Day) on 25th. If any of these are days off for you, I hope the snow and cold weather are now far behind us and that there is plenty of sunshine so you can get out and enjoy it, for at least a couple of hours. Here’s hoping!

Talking of sunshine and spending time outside, the Rugby in Bloom Competition is now open for entries. Anyone can enter – individuals, businesses and community groups. So, if you’re interested, or know anyone else that is, more information and entry forms can be found at the Visitor Centre at Rugby Library, Art Gallery and Museum, the Town Hall and online at www.rugby.gov.uk/rugbyinbloom. Entries open until 5th July.

In this special Royal year, and along with our new Queens Diamond Jubilee Centre (set to open in July), Rugby has also had several sites designated as Queen Elizabeth II Fields – areas that will be protected forever. Have a look at the plaque at the Old Tool Shed Café in Caldecott Park and keep an eye out for them at Whitehall, Alwyn Road, Featherbed Lane, Avon Mill and Whinfield Recreation Grounds.

This month’s competition also has an outdoor theme. Whitefields Golf Club, Thurlaston are offering our readers the opportunity to win a four ball weekday game. So, if you have no idea what to get your Dad

or Grandad for Father’s Day next month – enter the competition! You too ladies – this competition’s for everyone! Our March winner was Christopher Walker from Hillmorton who correctly located Rugby Theatre in a) Henry Street. Christopher secured two tickets to a showing of ‘The Business of Murder’ courtesy of Rugby Theatre plus £20.00 off a meal for two at River Avon Restaurant. We had a record number of entries for this prize so thank you to all of you who entered by post, email, via our website and in person.

Finally, don’t forget that voting day is 2nd May. All County Council seats are up for election this time.

AmandaPS How are your New Year resolutions going? Still persevering or are they long forgotten? I have to admit that I fell by the wayside around Easter (winning a huge Easter Egg didn’t help!) but I’m happy to say that I’m back on track now and I hope you are too. Remember – it’s never too late to start again!

ON TWO SUCCESSIVE EVENINGS each year in June a magnificent pageant of military music, precision drill and colour takes place on Horse Guards Parade in the heart of London when the Massed Bands of the Household Division carry out the Ceremony of Beating Retreat. It is an unforgettable evening as 300 musicians, drummers and pipers perform this age-old ceremony. The Retreat has origins in the early days of chivalry when beating or sounding retreat pulled a halt to the days fighting, a return to camp and the mounting of the guard for the night. Today, Beating Retreat, has become a major event in the Army’s ceremonial calendar, delivering an evening of spirited marches as well as poignant and evocative hymns and anthems of special significances to our fighting forces everywhere. The salute is taken by Her Majesty The Queen or another member of The Royal Family. The participants of Household Division Beating Retreat are drawn from the bands of the two Household Cavalry Regiments and the five Foot Guards Regiments which make up the Household Division. The Massed Bands of The Royal Marines have also been Beating Retreat on Horse Guards Parade approximately every three years since 1960 to celebrate the birthday of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Captain General Royal Marines.

RAILWAY TERRACEFor many years in the mid-19th Century this was just a mud-dy track with railway sleepers fencing both sides but with only one footpath on one side. It was made about 1840 and it was to provide access to the second railway station which was opened in that year.Over the years many businesses have come and gone and although some buildings have been demolished some still stand with current businesses in. Next to the Carlton Ho-tel today is a furniture store but back in the 1960’s this was called the Hippodrome, then later The Palace. The old Police Station used to stand on the corner of Railway Terrace and Craven Road and it also used to provide access into the cattle market where trading of farm stock used to regularly take place.Today there are a mixture of larger and smaller businesses up and down the road all of which offer a great service to their customers. Please pay them a visit and help to support your local traders!!

PorschePanamera GTS

It’s the Noel Edmonds of the car world: Some love his fuzzy patch of facial hair, while others detest his banker-bothering ways. Much like the Panamera. OK, not a lot like the Panamera, but you get my point, sort of. This baboon-bottomed, super-sized porker isn’t for everyone. It’s big, brash and in your face – and this jazzed up GTS version is even more raucous. But is it too jazzy? We find out...

What is it? It’s Porsche’s executive-transporting-super-giant machine with added fizz-bang-wallop. The GTS sits below the Turbo, but is still ludicrously swift for a car and as long as your average P&O ferry. Slightly harder, sportier and more involving, the GTS is for punting pen-pushers to the office with a bit more vigour and involvement.

What’s under the bonnet? Under its Bergerac-esque conk is an utterly brilliant 4.8-litre lump lifted from the Panamera S. In GTS guise, it gets a bit more stomp – up 30bhp to 424bhp with torque at 520Nm. This is mated to a brilliant, self-shifting seven-speed ‘box which makes for rapid getaways. Despite its bulk, it will rival a BMW M5 in the 0-60mph sprint, covering it in 4.5s whilst going on to hit 174mph top whack.

What’s the kit like? Suitably impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll pay through the nose for it. This test model had a whopping £15,159 worth of options on it. The red paint cost £2,517 alone, then there’s £3,197 for the dynamic chassis control and torque vectoring plus ceramic brakes cost a scary £5,924. You even pay £295 for the heated seats.

Any rivals?Oh, you betcha. All premium manufacturers have a rival or two. BMW could flog you an M5 or a 7 Series, Audi has an S8 (which is awesome), Jaguar an XJ probably in R trim. And Mercedes would no doubt sell you something slightly duller like an S Class. But what you really want from them is something with an AMG badge. Anyway, you get our point – there’s lots of choice.

Is it any good?In a word, yes. I was thinking of ending things there, but that wouldn’t have been much of a review. The GTS is quite possibly the best Panamera available. It’s rapid, incredibly entertaining, engaging to drive and sounds fiery. There are three driving modes, but I can’t remember them all as the only one you really want is Sport Plus. It sounds better, it goes quicker and the steering

feels crisp. On the road, the four wheel drive makes it feel planted and it’s one of the comfiest cars over distance I’ve tried for a long time.

The verdictI want one... and I wouldn’t have said that about a Panamera before I drove the GTS version. For someone who likes involvement in their daily drive, but comfort to boot, the GTS ticks a lot of boxes. The looks won’t float everyone’s boat, but they certainly grew on me over my week with the barge. However, you’re going to need pretty deep pockets to enjoy this Porsche as the options alone cost more than three Dacia Sandero’s! But I know which I’d rather have on the driveway.

Myton Chief Executive Kate Lee said: “We are delighted to have received these grant and the money will make huge difference to the patients and families we look after. In Rugby we submitted a bid for £132,000 and have been granted £90,000 which, although it doesn’t cover everything, is still a huge sum of money. We are always amazed by the level of support we receive and we will be relying on our wonderful supporters to help us make up the difference.”It’s Party Time!Registration for this year’s Moonlight Walk is now open and we are offering a 50% discount to the first 200 people who sign up! Join us at Warwick Castle on Saturday 14th September for just £5 with our amazing Early Bird offer. But you need to be quick as places are selling fast! Visit www.mytonhospice.org to register or find out more!

Thank you!We would like to say a big thank you to Princethorpe College student Alice Varah who has raised over £250 for us by holding a La Fiesta Salsa Evening. The 19-year-old knows first-hand the difference our Myton nurses can make as our Myton at Home team looked after for her father Andrew before his death last July. She said: “The nurses are just so approachable and although we had only known them for a few days it felt like we had known them for years. We will never forget the amazing care they gave us and it made the process so much easier to bear even at the worst time possible.”We would also like to thank staff and pupils at Princethorpe College where the event was held and everyone who attended. The event also raised money for two other worthy causes.

Alice and her family presented the money raised to fundraiser Nigel and nurses Faye and Helen.

The Handy Household - The Benefits of BicarbWhether you know it as baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate or simply, bicarb, no home should be without this wonder product. While it’s regularly used in cooking as a raising agent, bicarbonate of soda has many more household uses offering an economical, non-toxic and effective remedy for a whole host of health, beauty and cleaning challenges.

Its deodorising powers are second to none – a slight dusting under the arms or in your shoes will keep you smelling fresh all day and if the cat litter tray starts to offend, just sprinkle some bicarb in the bottom to neutralise those nasty odours. In fact, bicarb can be used to deodorise everything from dishwashers to fridges, and a soak in a diluted solution, will freshen up any kitchenware from old thermos flasks to coffee makers.

Always keep some in the bathroom because if you run out of toothpaste, bicarb mixed into a paste with water, will do the job just as well. This miracle paste also makes a fantastic skin exfoliator and can also be used to soothe itchy insect bites or, diluted with water, can be drunk as a cure for indigestion. What’s more, if you add it to your bath water it will even soften your skin.

Its ability to cut through grease and oil stains make it particularly handy for adding to your weekly wash, or cleaning burnt pans or even for unblocking drains – simply pour down some bicarb, followed by boiling water.

Need any more convincing? Well, it’s also an effective fire extinguisher and can douse the flames of small kitchen fires. No home should be without it.
