In addition to concerns over their PBT effects in aquatic environments, branched NPs (the primary breakdown product of NPEs) show indications that they are moderate endocrine disrupters. Studies in the early 1990s of their oestrogenic effects on cultured human breast cells, and in fish and other animal cells, led to the current health concerns. OP is also known to be an oestrogen mimic and is more toxic to aquatic organisms than NP. While the current use of OPE surfactants is minor compared to NPEs, the UK-based producers and distributors have extended the voluntary ban to OPE to avoid companies switching to these very similar materials.
