The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

A big welcome to our opponents Armthorpe Welfare who have travelled here tonight from South Yorkshire. Armthorpe currently lie in 17th position in the league and come to the i2i Stadium on the back of a 4-0 midweek defeat to Liversedge. With just two games left to play, Armthorpe are only two points clear of the relegation zone, and will be keen to spoil our promotion party to save themselves a nerve-wracking end to the season.

September’s reverse fixture was an extremely close affair with Nick Black and Matt Heath both finding the net to come away with a 2-2 draw. With so much at stake for the Brewers, we fully expect today’s match to be equally as tough.

We were delighted with the two 1-0 wins over Garforth Town this week. We knew those games were going to be extremely tough, so to come away with all six points is a massive achievement for a team tasked with playing as many as 10 games in the month of April. So far, we have won seven and lost only one, which is a tremendous return. If we can win tonight’s game against Armthorpe, the league title will be ours and we will be promoted into the Evo-Stik First Division North, which has been our number one aim since we took over the club part way through the 2013/14 season. To be in with a real chance of winning promotion in just our second full season is a massive achievement for everyone involved with the Brewers.

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who travelled to Garforth on Tuesday night. For a club of this size to attract such an away crowd is fantastic, and we hope we can reward your commitment with a win tonight. It’s been billed as Taddy’s week of destiny, and so far everything has gone to plan. We now need just three points from our remaining two games to be assured of the top-spot, which is a very healthy position to be in.

This Saturday we face Athersley Recreation in our final league game of the season. We don’t yet know how important the game will be. The pressure might be off and we may be celebrating winning the title, but a poor result tonight could easily turn it into a nerve-wracking second bite at the cherry. Whatever happens tonight, we’d love to see as many of you as possible down at the i2i Stadium to cheer us on. Don’t forget on Tuesday night, we are also at home to Albion Sports in the League Cup Semi Final. Do we dare to dream that it could be a Taddy double?

Enjoy tonight’s game and thanks again for all your support. Nothing motivates the team more than the sound of the TSC. Let’s hope that tonight’s game will go down in Taddy history as the club’s greatest achievement yet.

The i2i Sports Directors Matt Gore, James Gore & Kent Mayall

TAFC Match PreviewTonight we welcome the fans, players and officials of Armthorpe Welfare for the penultimate game of our NCEL Premier campaign. On Wednesday evening, Handsworth Parramore’s game at Pontefract Collieries was postponed due to vandalism, so a victory this evening will give us the NCEL title and a historic promotion.

It is very tight for The Wellie at the bottom of the table, but they still need something from tonight’s game and a trip to Garforth Town on Saturday. They are currently in 17th place in the table with 39 points from 40 games played, just 2 points out of the relegation zone. Their away form has brought them 4 wins and 4 draws from their 19 games played. Their

leading goalscorer is Stuart Preston with12 goals in all competitions. On Tuesday evening, they lost 4-0 at Liversedge, but that is only their 3rd loss in the last 8 NCEL league games. One of those losses was a 5-0 defeat at Handsworth Parramore. In the away league game at Armthorpe back in September The Brewers drew 2-2 with goals from Nick Black and Matt Heath in front of a crowd of 90.

I will predict a 2-0 Brewers victory tonight so we can enjoy Saturdays last game of the season. Thank you for your magnificent support of The Brewers this season.

TAFC Manager’s Notes

Good evening everyone and welcome to the i2i for tonight’s game against Armthorpe Welfare. We hope they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home after tonight’s game.

As we enter the final stages of what has been a rollercoaster of a season, we are close to achieving everything we set of to achieve way back in July 2015 when the lads turned up for pre-season training. A big final push will see us over the line and we look forward to everything that comes with winning at this level. But, we also know it can quite easily be snatched from under our feet. We know this group of players will remain focused, we know this group of players will give their all and we know this group of players is capable. We also know the support we have received this season has been exceptional, loud and very positive. Thank you.

The squad is very healthy although a little mentally tired, but I am sure, given the current situation and the fact that our opponents

have also played a similar number of games, means we start on a level playing surface. Given that, I would rather be in our position; mentally tired playing to win the league than mentally tired trying to survive. We have no long term injuries less Liam and our disciplinary record is outstanding. We are ready for the task at hand.

Tonight is a huge step forward for Tadcaster Albion. We have worked hard to give ourselves a chance. Your help is so essential in trying to get us over the line. Your support this year has been outstanding, one big final roar please!

Yours in Sport, The Management #tadallover

The club was formed in 1926 as part of the Colliery Social Welfare scheme. Throughout its years, it achieved varied but limited success before disbandment in 1974. The lack of senior football in the village was soon recognised, and the club was reformed in 1976 when they registered in the Doncaster Senior League Division Three.

It wasn’t long before honours were arriving, starting with the Senior League Championship in 1978/79 season. The following years brought further success by way of the Second Division Championship (1979/80), then the First Division Championship in the 1981/82 season, when they also lifted the West Riding Challenge Cup. Welfare also won the Doncaster Senior League Cup in the 1979/80 season and retained it for the following three seasons.

The 1982/83 season proved to be the most productive season as this included the Doncaster Senior League Championship, the West Riding Challenge Cup, the Goole and Thorne District FA Challenge Cup and the Doncaster Senior League Cup. The reserve team also lifted the Doncaster and District Challenge Trophy.

The following season saw Welfare join the Northern Counties East League in the Northern Second Division. They finished runners-up, which was enough to gain promotion to the Central Division One. Once again, they were promoted at the first time of asking by topping the division in 84/85. It was this year where the goal scoring talents of Martin Johnson; the former Boston FC striker, and Peter Camm saw them score 42 goals between them.

Since the glory days of the early 80’s, Welfare have maintained their place in the Northern Counties East Premier Division since 1985, but has not lifted any silverware in that time. They came close in 2007/08 when they were reached the Presidents Cup Final, but were beaten 4-2 (AET) by Liversedge.

The 2009/2010 season was their most successful of recent times, and if not for a late drop in form, could have gained promotion to the Unibond (now Evo-Stik) First Division. They still managed their highest point’s haul (79) to finish third, and reached the fourth round of the FA Vase where Wroxham beat them on penalties in the replay. Welfare also reached the League Cup Final, but finished runner-up to Dinnington Town.

Unfortunately, Welfare couldn’t carry their recent success into last season. Despite a core of long serving Welfare players, others left, and new faces were brought in to replace them. The first half of the season was difficult as the players tried to gel, and form did improve through the second

half of the season to end with a 13th place finish. 17 different players played in defence throughout the season, with more than 50 signed on in total meaning stability was going to be an issue.

Welfare’s most high profile signing has been former Doncaster Rovers, Cardiff City and Rotherham professional Leo Fortune-West, who contributed 7 goals in 13 appearances last season in his first season. Fortune-West made 29 appearances last season, but he gradually took more of a back seat, assisting manager Des Bennett on the coaching side. Then at the end of 2011/12 season Bennett announced he was to resign after 24 years at the club. Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, and on work commitments, his 13 years as manager came to an end. He left the club having maintained their status in the NCEL Premier League throughout his tenure, and last season guided the team to a 1st qualifying round replay in the FA Cup, and the third round of the FA Vase.

Welfare moved swiftly, and it seemed a natural transition to appoint Fortune-West as manager, with Gary Paton joining him as assistant manager. They certainly have a challenge on their hands after a number of players left the club, and it was a challenge that proved too great. The squad failed to gel together, and there were multiple personnel changes throughout the season. A major change occurred half way through the campaign when assistant manager Gary Paton resigned, but there was no time to dwell on the situation as the games were coming thick and fast. Brian Johnston was appointed assistant, and with him he brought a host of new faces. Despite the quality of some players showing through, there was still inconsistency in team selection and tactics, and Fortune-West was struggling to get his team playing as a team.

The threat of relegation became very real, and Fortune-West tendered his resignation with five games left to play. Johnston stepped up to the plate and it came down to the final day of the season. Welfare required a win to be sure of safety, and despite going 1-0 down, Welfare battled back to win 2-1 and secure Premier Division status and maintain the clubs record of never being relegated in their history.

The 2013/14 season started with much more optimism, but realistically the club knew there was a major rebuilding job to be done. Johnston was the man tasked with this and was given the manager’s job permanently. The squad was still tainted with the problems of the previous season, but retaining key players was important, and Johnston added a few new faces to bolster the squad.

The overall season was an improvement, and the

main target of avoiding relegation was achieved well in advance of the end of the season. The 2014/15 season went much the same way, although at the turn of 2015, there were real worries we would be dragged into a relegation battle. However, a dramatic upturn in form where we picked up 16 points from the 24 available between the end of January to the middle of March gave us a big enough boost to see out the season and finish a place higher than the season before.

Consistency will always be key, and it’s difficult when players are playing on a voluntary basis to ensure they are available every week, but with a little more fortune, if consistency improves then we should have no problems maintaining our NCEL Premier Division status.

With the NCEL becoming tougher and tougher each year with the money that is now available to a lot of clubs, surviving in this league with our resources is a major achievement. Initially, that’s what we aim for – we are proud of our record of never having been relegated in the clubs history and it is something we’d like to maintain! Going further though, we should look to be finishing higher than other similar clubs, which could be as high as 13th.

The ground at Church Street has a capacity of 2,500, and it held close to that in 1986 when facing Doncaster Rovers in a charity match.

Charlie Braithwaite Played 5 games so far this season.

Craig Aspinall Played 21 games. With 2 assists. Previously with Retford United, joined us in 2013 and chosen to continue with us for his 2nd full season here. Accomplished central midfielder, always looking to take the ball and pass forward. Suffered with a knee injury through last summer’s pre-season and up to November, but made quick progress and returned to the side with ease. His influence in the game is often understated, but is pretty much the first name on the team sheet.

Daniel Taylor Played 12 games so far this season. Determined and versatile midfielder, but one who plays with a bit more flair. Good passing ability and works extremely hard off the ball, often played out wide where he is encouraged to get forward and support the attack. Darren Mansaram Played 12 games. With 1 assist. Not your typical striker as can sometimes drop deep to make things happen, but has goal scoring ability as well. Has good pace and his height makes him a threat from set pieces.

David BuckPlayed 12 games. With 3 goals and 1 assist. Dean ConwayPlayed 1 game so far this season. Gary Mundy Played 2 games. With 1 assist.

Jack Walters Played 6 games so far this season. James Handley Played 18 games. With 2 goals and 1 assist.

James Walker James is well known at Armthorpe Welfare after spells at the club in 2008/09, 2011-2013. Central or wide midfielder who simply never stops running. Throws himself into everything and also a danger going forward, especially when taking free-kicks. Joe Lumsden Joe has been very unfortunate to suffer three serious injuries to the same knee during his career, the last of which occurred on Dec 1st 2012 with his first game back being August 2014. Joe has shown impeccable loyalty to the club and has stuck with us despite approaches from other clubs on a regular basis ever since he joined us! Top scorer for us last year with 23 goals, and voted Player’s Player of the Year for last season. Would certainly have progressed to a much higher level if not for his injury troubles.

John Tunney Played 15 games so far this season. Jonothan Mirfin Joined from Rossington Main two years ago, and looked good in his first season. However, he was mostly absent last season for personal reasons, but has returned this summer ready for the season ahead. A real asset to the midfield, seems to get everywhere and fights hard to win the ball back.

Josh Gibbons Josh turns 23 next week so is still relatively young, but has been one of Brian’s trusted players for a number of years now. Although he cannot do much pre-season training each year due to the nature of his work, he quickly gets up to speed. Uncompromising centre half who knows how to make a solid tackle and has good positional sense thanks to his excellent reading of the game. Kieran Benson Played 17 games. With 3 goals and 4 assists.Started out at the club in 2012, but found limited opportunities initially as a young lad trying to gain experience. He showed a great attitude by continuing to show up every week, and when he got his chance on the pitch he looked impressive. He progressed in 2013/14 and became a first team regular playing in a number of forward positions which continued into last season. A dangerous player going forward who always looks to attack and will provide a good source for the strikers. Is an excellent example to the new Under 19’s setup of how you can progress with the right attitude.

Leigh Overton Played 15 games so far this season.

Lewis Dale Played 1 game so far this season.

Liam Copley (GK)Played 1 game so far this season. Was originally drafted in to fill in for Will Biggs when he wasn’t available last season after a spell with Maltby Main. Made his own mark on the team and has been selected in front of Will on a few occasions, and will look to do that more often this season.

Liam White Played 6 games so far this season.

Michael Bunn Played 12 games so far this season. Experienced defender who plays central or on the left. Plays with bravery and never backs out of a challenge, one of those who will put his body on the line for the club.

Nathan Lovitt Played 3 games so far this season.

Richard Smith Played 10 games. With 1 goal. After three seasons

at Welfare, Smith moved to Retford for the 2014-15 season. With things not going to plan at Retford, he transferred to Welfare in February 2015 to boost our relegation battle. Can play either at the back or up front and is a powerful player who uses that to his advantage in either position. Was at Doncaster Rovers until he was 16. Went to University and played for four years there. Joined Bottesford Town after his graduation and played for Bentley Colliery before joining Welfare. A vocal player and one of the more influential players in the squad. Ryan Watson Played 5 games so far this season. Ryan, who knows Brian from their time together at Askern, has previously captained both Tadcaster Albion and Selby Town before a spell as player/coach at Riccall United. Now 32, Ryan wants to focus more on his coaching, and has stated his desire to make an impact with Armthorpe in the NCEL Premier in the coming season by trying to push on from a decent second half of the season last time around and win a trophy. Steven Garner Played 10 games so far this season. Previously at Selby Town and also in his fourth season here. One of the mainstays of the defence ever since he arrived, doesn’t miss many games and can play in the centre or on the left. Has great composure and is solid in defence, while also capable of bursting forward, especially when selected at left back. Clearly a fan favourite after being named Supporter’s Player of the Season for the past 3 seasons in a row.

Stuart Preston Played 14 games. With 6 goals and 1 assist. Former Scunthorpe United trainee, and previously with Harrogate Town. Has played for Welfare for a number of years with a spell at Brigg Town in between. Clever midfielder who loves to get forward but is not afraid of a tackle either. Works hard which sometimes gets him into injury troubles.

Tom McLaughlin Played 16 games. With 3 goals and 4 assists. 27 year old striker that originally signed for us in the summer of 2013, but never kicked a ball due to a knee injury which kept him out of the entire season. He fully recovered and played his first full season with us last season making himself first choice left winger. Manager’s Player of the Year last season.

William Biggs (GK)Played 6 games so far this season. Originally from Norwich, he is a former Doncaster Rovers trainee and begins his fourth season for Welfare as he turns 24 in September. Has claimed the No. 1 shirt as his own and is an excellent shot stopper, and good in one on one situations. Has suffered sometimes from a lack of an organized defence when it is changed around every week and has saved the club from heavier defeats on multiple occasions.

Head 2 Head A FCAlthough the Brewers and Armthorpe Welfare met in the second season of the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) - the Division Two North of the 1983/84 campaign- they didn’t play again in the league until 2010.

On the way to promotion, Welfare were the winners of both of those games in the 1983/84 season - 3-0 at Armthorpe and 2-0 at Tadcaster.

The first NCEL league goal scored by the Brewers against Welfare came from Carl Stewart in a 3-3 away draw in the 2010/11 season. The return match saw Albion lose 3-4, with the much travelled former Football League striker Leo Fortune-West on the scoresheet.

Each team won their away game in the 2011/12 NCEL campaign but the next four seasons have seen the Brewers go unbeaten in seven matches between the two clubs.

On a wet Tuesday night in November 2014, around 200 Brewers fans visited Armthorpe, hoping to see a repeat of a 7-0 win at Liversedge three days earlier. They were not disappointed.

Two Carl Stewart goals had the Brewers 2-0 up after just 10 minutes. Goals for Jonathan Greening and Josh Barrett took the score to 4-0 by halftime. Barrett added his second and Stewart completed his hat-trick early in the second half. Vincent Dhesi then joined the scorers midway through the second period before Greening also completed his hat-trick with two more goals. With only a few minutes remaining, David Brown completed the scoring and took the final score to 10-0 - the joint highest away victory for Tadcaster Albion.

On another Tuesday night, five months later, Welfare visited the i2i

Stadium and were beaten 5-0, in front of a crowd of 281. Calum Ward, George Bissett, David Brown (2) and Liam Ormsby were the scorers on that occasion.

Earlier this season, a below par performance by the Brewers resulted in a disappointing 2-2 draw at the Welfare Ground. Kieran Benson put the home side ahead just before halftime. Goals from Nick Black and Matt Heath turned the game around in the second half but James Walker had the last laugh with a 75th minute equaliser.

Thanks to the successes of the last few seasons, the Brewers have the better record in NCEL meetings - winning six and drawing three of the 13 games, with 34 goals scored and 21 conceded.

Welfare have a 100% record in the four NCEL League Cup ties between the clubs - scoring 15 goals.

In the 1988/89 season, they won 3-0 at Ings Lane in a second round tie. Three years later, the Brewers were brushed aside 5-0 in another second round game at Armthorpe. In the third round of the 1998/99 season, Albion lost 0-2 in an away tie. At least the Brewers did score in the fourth round match of the 2009/10 season but Welfare still won 5-1 at Tadcaster.

Armthorpe Welfare also came out victorious in the West Riding County Cup first round tie of the 2002/03 season - winning 1-0.

The Brewers’ only success in cup ties between the clubs was in the FA Cup first round qualifying of the 1998/99 season. After a 1-1 draw at Tadcaster, the teams also drew 0-0 in the replay at Armthorpe. Albion, who were struggling in the NCEL’s Division One, beat their Premier Division opponents 4-3 on penalties.

NCEL 2015-16 Garforth Town FC v TAFC by Jay Taylor

A second 1-0 win in four days over local rivals Garforth Town puts Tadcaster Albion on the brink of the title and promotion. It was the recent acquisition of Tom Corner who scored the only goal of the game after coolly slotting into the bottom corner after fourteen minutes.

Taddy boss Billy Miller made just the one change to the team that beat the same side on Saturday with Gregg Anderson replacing Adam Baker which saw Jason Mycoe move back into his more familiar central midfield role.

It’s a lovely set-up at nearby neighbours Garforth with the one big main stand and a pitch which was looking lovely in the Yorkshire sunset.

Tad’s top marksman Josh Greening hadn’t scored in the last three outings which is a rarity to see him out of the headlines, but the forward came close to scoring his 26th goal of the season in the very first minute. A clipped ball forward was brought down effortlessly by Greening who waited for the perfect opportunity to curl towards the top corner but his effort landed just on top of the goal.

As the sun disappeared, the wind picked up and the temperatures plummeted drastically, it felt like November, not the end of April. It took the home side eight minutes to warm up and weave into the match as Curtly Martin-Wyatt got the better of Dan Clayton before firing a dangerous ball across the face of goal which was missed by all.

Dominic Smith in the Garforth goal was look-ing less than comfortable with swirling crosses being fired into his box. Josh Greening’s corner after eleven minutes the perfect example as the stopper completely missed the ball which almost dropped to defender Andy Milne for a tap in.

The constantly vocal Taddy fans were given something to shout even louder about in the fourteenth minute as The Brewers nudged in front. Alali headed a Conor Sellars cross into the air to which Josh Greening met in the air elegantly on his chest before striking a shot/cross (only Josh knows) which incidentally fell to Tom Corner who controlled and confidently stroked into the bottom left corner.

Just what Billy Miller and Matt Heath ordered, an early goal to give them the platform to go on and win the match. Corner has been a very good signing for Tadcaster, not just because of his aerial threat but he has scored some important goals.

The Brewers had a decent half chance to hit Garforth with a misery compiler almost immediately after the opening goal. A short clearance was met by the onrushing Josh Greening who chested and struck a half volley with his weaker right foot on target but Smith got down well to his right.

Taddy were having the better of the play in the first half as the home battled well and fought hard but lacked the creativity in the final third as Jimmy Beadle headed wide of the mark from a Greening corner.

Luke McCrum did have a half chance for Garforth as Mick Jones picked out the unmarked defender who headed four yards wide from twelve yards out which was followed by a speculative curler from Tim Robertson which flew way over the target.

For the vast majority of the first half Taddy dominated possession and seemed to be in cruise mode after Tom Corner’s fifth goal since joining The Brewers however it was very nearly 2-0 and should have been as half-time loomed.

Josh Greening soared down the right and intelligently flicked over McCrum’s head to brother Jono Greening. The chasing back Jassim Alali was undone by the flight and trajectory of the ball which saw Greening one on one with goalkeeper Dominic Smith.

Greening’s first poked effort was stopped by Smith’s feet and it looked like all the world that his second effort was going to make the net ripple but as he took it round Smith and fired on target Greg Kidd had unbelievably got back to clear off the line.

Half-Time: Garforth Town 0-1 Tadcaster Albion

The first chance of the second half came after four minutes and what a good chance it was for Taddy. It was Josh Greening again as Sellars’ floated delivery landed on the head of the unmarked Greening who diverted his header on target but straight into Smith’s hands.

Garforth were certainly giving it more of a go than Saturday’s match at the i2i stadium as the tall figure of Curtly Martin-Wyatt looked to get going on a few occasions but support for the striker was limited.

Also, every time they did test The Brewers’ defence it was most definitely the latter that came out on top. Gregg Anderson was a warrior at the back along with the solid consistencies of Andy Milne, Josh Barrett, Dan Clayton and goalkeeper Gary Stevens.

A controversial moment arose in the 64th minute as Jimmy Beadle was adjudged to have dived I believe in the penalty area but wasn’t shown a yellow card. It’s hard to tell when watching from afar but there was certainly contact with the Tadcaster skipper however the man in the middle thought there wasn’t enough in it.

Gary Stevens wasn’t being tested in the Taddy goal as the snow remarkably started to come down in Garforth, it was an incredibly cold evening and the match itself kind of reflected the weather as it wasn’t a classic.

Although having said that Taddy had a good chance to double their lead and put the game to bed and it came from the best passage of play in the match. Jono Greening was once again having another consistently brilliant game drove out wide to the left before pulling back inside to Josh Greening who superbly rolled Alali and played in the surging forward Beadle who back-heeled first time to Tom Corner who just couldn’t bend it round Smith.

As every side does, Garforth had a spell in the match and it came with roughly fifteen minutes to go. They did give Gary Stevens something to do eventually as Martin-Wyatt carried the ball towards the edge of the penalty box before playing the ball sidewards to the all alone substitute Mark Simpson but his left footed attempt was tame and easy for Stevens to pick up.

Mark Simpson came close to snatching a draw in the fixture on Saturday coming off the bench and he was looking lively again after coming on. He was once again played in down the left hand side but the phenomenal work rate of Conor Sellars saw the Taddy wide man slide and block the dangerous cross.

The Brewers should have wrapped up and the match and sealed the three points with thirteen minutes to go. One long swirling goal kick from Stevens bounced over the top of the Garforth back line and was met by Tom Corner who just had to help it on over the goalkeeper but he helped it on just wide of the left-hand upright.

I’m sure a few nerves were jangling around the Taddy fans’ stomachs with ten minutes to go but the lead never looked massively under threat. Every time The Miners did get a cross in or play a ball over the top, Gregg Anderson was there to head clear. Tim Robertson did come close to finding the corner of the net but saw his powerful strike from 23 yards whistle wide.

On another day Josh Greening could have had a hat-trick as another chance squirmed away from the forward with Josh Barrett’s super cross miscued by the ever prolific striker.

Curtly Martin-Wyatt had one final chance to pinch a draw in the dying embers. The forward stole the ball off Jimmy Beadle on the half-way line who then saw the whole half open up in front of him but as he got nearer to the penalty box he was forced to the right hand side and in the end his effort at goal was comfortable for Stevens.

In the end Tadcaster held on to their one goal advantage to put them on the brink of the title and promotion. There wasn’t a great deal in the match but Tom Corner’s precise finish was enough to seal Taddy’s second 1-0 victory over their local rivals in four days.

As a result of Basford United and Long Eaton United both leaving the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) Premier Division and joining the Midland League, NCEL membership dropped from 45 to 43 clubs for the 2014/15 season. The Premier Division reduced in size to just 21 teams.

Brighouse Town moved up to the Northern Premier League (NPL) Division One North following their success in the 2013/14 campaign. Their place in the NCEL Premier Division was taken by Worksop Town, who moved down two tiers from the NPL Premier Division.

Within the NCEL, Lincoln Moorlands Railway and Winterton Rangers had been relegated from the Premier Division and replaced by the ambitious Cleethorpes Town and Shaw Lane Aquaforce, who were promoted from Division One.

Appleby Frodingham and Dinnington Town both dropped down to the Central Midlands League (CML) from the NCEL Division One. Their places in the NCEL’s lower tier were taken by AFC Mansfield (CML) and Penistone Church (Sheffield & Hallam County Senior League).

The NCEL season started with a defeat for the Brewers - 1-2 at home against Shaw Lane Aquaforce, who were one of the favourites to win the league. The Barnsley club’s goals were scored by future Tadcaster players, George Conway and Daniel Patterson.

Albion reacted well to the opening day reverse and won the next nine league games. This run included home wins against Nostell Miners Welfare (4-2), Glasshoughton Welfare (5-1), Retford United (5-1), Maltby Main (6-0) and a 4-1 victory in front of regional TV cameras at Parkgate. The Brewers now topped the league by one point and had one game in hand of the second placed team.

The second defeat of the league campaign came at Staveley Miners Welfare but this was followed by another seven wins. The highlights were a 7-0 triumph at Liversedge and a record breaking 10-0 demolition of Armthorpe Welfare, in front of a sizeable travelling support from Tadcaster. Both Carl Stewart and Jonathan Greening scored hat-tricks in the record away win.

The Brewers had now opened up a nine point lead at the top of the league but Shaw Lane Aquaforce did have one game in hand.

November came to a close with a bad tempered encounter at Worksop Town. The 10 men from Tadcaster - after Jonathan Greening received an early red card - snatched a

last gasp equaliser in a 2-2 draw but unsavoury events off the pitch made the headlines.

The Brewers suffered from inconsistency for a few months, with their league programme being interrupted by cup ties in three competitions. In crucial matches against title contenders, Cleethorpes Town picked up a 3-0 victory at the i2i Stadium and, on a heavy pitch, Shaw Lane Aquaforce won 1-0 in a game where both teams had players sent off. The most disappointing result was a lacklustre 1-2 home defeat against mid-table Thackley, just a few days before a big FA Vase game.

April brought an upturn in form with five consecutive victories for the Brewers, including 5-0 home wins over Armthorpe Welfare and Staveley Miners Welfare plus a 4-1 success at Retford United.

The winning run came to an end when the Brewers lost 2-3 at Cleethorpes Town - their bogey-side. A 4-2 win at Nostell Miners Welfare followed, before the final game of the season - at home against new found rivals Worksop Town.

Going into the game with the Tigers, the Brewers were one point behind their second placed opponents. Although it was impossible for either team to win the league, there was a runners up trophy to be won. Unfortunately, two Connor Sellars goals secured a 2-1 win for the visitors and they clinched second place in the league.

The Brewers finished the season in third place, with 86 points from their 40 games - eight points behind the champions Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

Attendances at the i2i Stadium continued to grow at an impressive rate, with average league crowds increasing by 73% to 321. The biggest league crowds of the season were for the games against Worksop Town (551), Bridlington Town (527), Pickering Town (523) and Heanor Town (462). The smallest turnout for a league match - 126 for the visit of Glasshoughton Welfare early in the season - was bigger than the average of the 2012/13 season.

Josh Greening, who scored hat-tricks in three consecutive NCEL games in September, finished the season as the club’s top scorer with 31 goals. Calum Ward and Carl Stewart also made a big contribution with 25 and 18 goals, respectively. Largely thanks to seven penalties, Liam Ormsby also reached double figures in the goal scoring charts.

To be continued in the Athersley Recreation programme.

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Morton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Manchester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.

For more information on our U19 set up, please email [email protected].
