12 A First World War RAF Trio, awarded to 12290 PTE H.L.TAYLOR, NORTH'D FUS: (later Lieutenant RAF), comprising 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, together with his pilot's leather helmet, Goggle Mask Flying Mark II by the Triplex Goggle Mask & Lens Co.Ltd., related photographs, including a handmade Souvenir album of Sir Alan Chobhams Air Display Sunday 28th July 1935, and ephemera including a typed synopsis of the career of Lieutenant Henry Lumsdon Taylor. **Lieutenant Lumsdon Taylor was shot in the head in an air

fight (described in detail in the ephemera) and was returned to England to recover. After briefly returning to France, he was again sent home where he was posted to an aircraft ferrying unit. On one of his many delivery trips he crashed a Sopwith T.1 Cuckoo at Ossett, Yorkshire. He was unhurt, but the aircraft was severely damaged, photographs of which are included with this

(Civil) Knight Commander's 1st type set of insignia, neck badge in silver gilt and enamel and breast star in silver, silver gilt and enamel; The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, C.M.G., Companion's neck badge in silver gilt and enamel; 1914-15 Star (LT.COL., R.F.A.); British War Medal and Victory Medal with MID oak leaf (LT.COL.); Coronation Medal 1911 (LIEUT. COLONEL CHARLES CLIFFORD, V.D., 3RD WEST RID.BRGDE R.F.A. SHEFFIELD); Jubilee Medal 1935 (un-named); Volunteer Decoration V.R.(un-named) complete with top bar, hallmarks for London 1902; and Territorial Decoration GVR (un-named) complete with top bar, hallmarks for London 1919, all mounted on a purple velvet display board with a Royal Artillery cap badge. K.B.E. London Gazette 3rd June 1925 "Colonel Charles Clifford, C.M.G., V.D., T.D., J.P. For political and public services in Sheffield" C.M.G. London Gazette 1st January 1918 M.I.D. London Gazette 15th June 1916; 1st January 1916; 4th January 1917; 14th December 1917 **Charles Clifford was the 4th son of Frederick Clifford, Q.C., Middle Temple. He commanded the Sheffield Territorial Artillery in France from April 1915 and afterwards commanded the 126th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. For his wartime services he was four times mentioned in despatches and awarded the C.M.G. He was later an Honorary Colonel of the 71st Field Brigade R.A. (T.F.) He was the proprietor of the Sheffield Telegraph group of papers, a J.P. for the City of Sheffield, and was sometime Chairman of the Executive of the Sheffield Conservative Federation and Chairman of the Sheffield Brightside Parliamentary Division. Awarded the K.B.E. in 1925 for his political and civic services, he also received an LL.D. from the university. In the 1930's he gave some land to the University of Sheffield to build a dental school; the Charles Clifford Dental School being finally opened in 1952. Colonel Clifford died at Whirlow, Sheffield, on 5th March 1936 £3000 - 4000

"Rhubarb" was the name given to the daily practise of an air operation searching the scrublands and jungle streams for evidence of enemy movement.
