MTP® 24

The purpose of this connectivity guide is to offer clear options in cabling the Arista 7500E, 7500R, 7300X and 7320X Series modular switches. The MXP ports on the 7500E can operate as standards-based 10G, 40G, or 100G Ethernet. The 7500E has eight other line cards available but this guide will specifically address the MXP line card. There are two options for chassis size: the 7504E (4-slot) and 7508E (8-slot). The 7500R has three line cards available operating 10G, 25G, 40G, 50G or 100G. There are three options for chassis size: 7504R (4-slot), 7508R (8-slot) and 7512R (12-slot). The 7300X operates at 1G, 10G and 40G. There are three options for chassis size: 7304X (4-slot), 7308X (8-slot) and 7316X (16-slot). The 7320X operates at 10G, 25G, 50G and 100G. There are two options for chassis size: 7324X (4-slot) and 7328X (8-slot). Ensuring these switches are cabled to run optimally in your enterprise network requires specific light paths and performance levels for connectivity.

Utilizing the MTP® connector in multi-fiber count trunk cables allows for a structured cabling solution, and if paired with high-performance cabling can last through generations of standards-based hardware upgrades. This also creates a manageable environment that can reduce layer one cabling errors that may occur due to the high port density of today’s enterprise data centers.

MXP PORTS FOR 40GBE, MTP® 24 TO 3X MTP® 12

Utilizing the MXP ports requires an MTP® cable assembly that transmits into three MTP® 12-fiber connections, which adapts the MXP port into 3x40GbE as shown in Figure 3. This converts the MXP port into three 12-fiber MTP® connections, each compatible with standards-based 40GBASE-SR4 ports over OM4 fiber up to 15m. CABLExpress provides the proper light paths that will guarantee standards-based compatibility with existing 40G SR4 optics.

MXP IN 10GBE MODE - MTP® 24 TO 12X LC

As the MXP port can also be operated as a 12-channel 10GbE structured cabling option (see diagram in Figure 5), it is used to adapt the MTP® 24 connector port to (12) LC connectors providing 10G connectivity. This converts the Arista MXP port into standards-based 10GBASE-SR LC connectors for using SR or SRL optics over multi-mode OM4 fiber infrastructure.

DEPLOYING AN OPTICAL CABLING INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE DATA CENTER FOR 40G AND 100G

CABLExpress recommends cabling infrastructure deployments in the data center that are based upon guidance found in the TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers. Using a distributed star topology and port replication in a structured cabling implementation provides the most flexible and manageable infrastructure. Port replication is a patching system that mirrors (duplicates) the active electronics in a passive environment. This reduces cable management issues, decreases opportunities for patch errors and minimizes wear and tear on the active ports. Many data center deployments today utilize the reduced topology described in TIA-942. See examples in Figure 6 and Figure 7.
