FAITH FORMATION

From the desk of: Ms. Kathleen Cook, Director of Religious Education

Theme: Jesus says that he is the good shepherd who knows his sheep.

Summary: The Gospel chosen for this Fourth Sunday of Easter gives us one of the most vivid and familiar images of compassion: the Good Shepherd. Jesus declares that he is the Good Shepherd, the one who has such compassion and

love for his people that he is willing to lay down his life for them. In this passage, we see Jesus extending his flock to in-clude those beyond the fold of Israel. Thus, we see through Jesus the compassion that God wants for all of humanity. Throughout Saint John’s Gospel, we hear many “I am” state-ments, and in this particular passage, we could translate I am the good shepherd to I am compassion.

Scripture: I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me--just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep." John 10:14-15

Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd." A shepherd is a person who takes care of sheep. Sheep can't take care of themselves. They need someone to watch over them and care for them. They need someone to protect them from harm. Jesus said he knows his sheep and his sheep know him. He said that he was even willing to lay down his life for his sheep. Jesus must really love his sheep!

Jesus wasn't really talking about sheep. He was talking about you and me. We are his "sheep." He loves us, he takes care of us, and he makes sure that we have everything that we need. He was even willing to give his life so that you and I could live with him forever in heaven. There is no doubt about it. Jesus really loves his sheep!

Dear Jesus, we are thankful to you for being our Good Shep-herd. Thank you for loving us and taking care of us. Most of all, we thank you for laying down your life for us so that we can have everlasting life in heaven with you. In Jesus' name we pray.

Family Discussion: The Good Shepherd makes sacrifices for the sheep not because it is required, but because it is a choice. That sounds a lot like parenting and the dynamics of a healthy family life. Parents choose to make sacrifices for their children out of love, not obligation. Christian parents model and invite their children to choose to make sacrifices for other family members and for other people, acting out of love rather than obligation. When you gather as a family, invite each family member to consider the attitude that permeates their participation in family life. Read a common examen, such as any of the following: Do we do family chores cheerfully and without having to be asked multiple times? Do we gladly share with others? Do we willing-ly contribute to the family good when asked? Read aloud to-day’s Gospel, John 10:11-18. Discuss together how the exam-ple of the Good Shepherd might inspire your family life. Invite each family member to make a renewed commitment to one action/attitude to focus on in the upcoming week that show that we will choose to follow the example of the Good Shepherd. Pray together that we will be able to honor our commitment. Pray together Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s Prayer for Generosity.

Reflect: If a word or phrase from the Gospel captures your heart, sit quietly for several minutes, repeating it to yourself and asking God to show you how it applies to your life. Or reflect and possibly journal on the following question: How have I made a difference or how can I make a differ-ence by showing leadership at St. John Vianney Parish or my school?

ANUNCIOS Y NOTICIAS ESPECIALES
