Trial Comments Growing Season Comments 2005:

The Growing Season for 2005 at Arise Research and Discovery, Inc. located outside Martinsville, Illinois, was challenging for research management and data collection. Temperatures were above normal in June, July, and August and early September and stressed all crops at different physiological stages of growth. Irrigation of all crops began in June and continued until the crops matured. Due to inadequate rainfall, over 5 million gallons of irrigation water were applied during the growing season.

The anticipated Asian Rust in soybeans did not appear, as well as disease and insect pressures at economic thresholds. High temperatures and low humidity suppressed many of the diseases and insects in the Midwest with the exception of the Western Corn Rootworm Beetle. Management practices through genetic modification and “gene stacking” produced a high return on investment for the purchase of these genetic packages. Corn rootworms in first-year corn were common.

Such a year, however, brings forth a great deal of data for the growing conditions. Products addressing specific stress issues were most successful. Slow release materials performed extremely well where moisture activation was not an issue.

The Arise Research Staff is to be complimented for the irrigation effort. Many, many late evenings and early mornings were required for maintaining active plant growth. When you visit the station, please give them a compliment.

Every year is a learning experience. The growing season for 2005 will be remembered as hot and dry, with yields on all crop species across the board. Geological History of Research Station: Arise Research and Discovery, Inc. is located in Clark County in East Central Illinois. Geologically, the research station acreage is located at the southern edge of the Wisconsin glaciation and extends into the Shelbyville moraine at the north edge of the Illinois glaciation. Glacial spurs are visible on the station. The north side of the farm was formed under prairie grass vegetation that followed the Wisconsin period of glaciation. It has dark colored soils consisting of Piasa types, which are similar to the Drummer soils to the north. These soils have a high water table, and are tiled and surface drained. The balance of the station runs into transitional soils between prairie timber and straight timber soils. The soil series classification is Cowden. Soil texture is silty clay loam with varying degrees of sand. All of the station is under intense conservation management with tile and surface drains. Wind blown material, loess, is mapped into the 3 to 5 foot zone, but glacial till can be found most places on the station at the 36 to 42 inch level. A small lake with an adjoining sediment retention pond is located in the northwestern part of the station’s acreage. Bordered by the established wildlife habitat of a neighboring hunting preserve, the lake is utilized for irrigation, fishing and wildlife support. 05-MKM0104-05, “MK Minerals’ Pelletized Calcium Rate and Application Timing Study on Established Alfalfa,” is a multiple discipline study. The qualifiers for this test are yield by treatment, timing applications, feed value analysis, tissue analysis and soil analysis at designated cuttings.

Irrigation was required in the 2005 Growing Season. Five clippings were achieved due to irrigation, however yields in tonnage were lower than 2004. Weather and curing conditions allowed for 30-day intervals between clippings. Above normal temperatures stimulated insect activity during July and August.

The MK Minerals program gained considerable recommendation strengths this year overall and gained in advantage with the protocol’s historical recordings. The advantages identified were yield and feed value analysis. It is apparent the addition of calcium as a nutrient, and not as a pH modifier, generates yield and feed value response. Calcium pelletized and distributed in a uniform pattern produced a higher response in yield and feed analysis than agricultural limestone. The uniformity in size and distribution is believed to be the factor in achievement of response

Academia has long viewed calcium as a pH modifier with limited attention to calcium in plant nutrition. Calcium moves in the soil by mass flow. Mass flow movement is influenced by the amount of moisture movement in the soil profile during a growing season. Calcium in the plant moves through the water-conducting xylem cells. Pelleted calcium’s mode of action offers more behavior control of adsorption than multiple sized agricultural limestone particles. Calcium is basically synergistic with all elements except aluminum, a nonessential plant element. Data Comments: Yield: Statistical analysis is based on LSD’s of 5. The use of calcium as a nutritional element strategy is significant over no calcium applications. The use of pelleted calcium compared to agricultural limestone calcium is significantly different in yield and feed value.

CV’s for this test are extremely low; therefore, the level of confidence is very high for the yield and feed analysis value increases.

Data analysis for calcium response is indicative of the recorded response history for pelleted calcium responses in yield and feed value. Feed Value: Feed value has many interpretation methods for use and placement in use. Crude Protein is the building block of feed formulas or rations. Pelleted Calcium has produced significant value increases historically and did so again at two different timings. This is the 2nd year of this study that timing of application separated itself from spring application alone. Timely irrigation is attributed to this recording. Soil and Tissue Tests: The plots are located in an area of the station in which the soil test levels for potassium are high by university standards. Soil tests of this level are common in this area due to the soil formation process. Tissue tests did not indicate deficient levels or yield inhibiting levels of any of the elements essential for growth.

Pelleted Calcium has demonstrated its benefits and use in a high management forage program. Recommendations for the 2006 Growing Season:

1. Continue this protocol as is. Calcium data has to have historical collections to measure its benefits. 2. A suggestion of one feed analysis per treatment be conducted per cutting with the exception of cutting

three in which all replications are sampled. This data would provide a status of Crude Protein guidelines.
