argeMIX L - lightweight insulating concrete for base screeds, leveling layers and concrete slope

argeMIX C - as a finishing screed is 50% lighter than a traditional concrete

argeMIX S - renovation, reinforcement or consolidation, composite floors

Argex is drawing on many years experience in the manufacture and supply of quality construction materials for

professionals to launch a new ready-mixed lightweight concrete for the DIY market.

Now available in bags, argeMIX is the simple solution to achieving consistent ready-mixed concrete time after

time. Simply add water and the specially formulated mix design does the rest, removing the need to measure

    components or resort to guesswork!

argeMIX is a dry mix based on cement and expanded clay and in addition to ease of use, argeMIX offers you

some other advantages: thanks to natural aggregates, it is a HEQ (High Environmental Quality) product that pro-

vides thermal and sound insulation and, despite its low density, argeMIX guarantees high mechanical strength.

This insulating concrete is incompressible, even under constant loading.

The most significant advantage remains the lightness of argeMIX concrete: with argeMIX L, for example, you

are opting for a lightweight concrete: up to four times lighter than any other concrete or traditional screed, both

in strength and working life. For all your applications - base screeds, level changes or composite floors - Argex

offers a range of solutions with argeMIX.

argeMIX: a ready-mixed concrete solution for a new build or in renovation work, when lightness is crucial!

HEQ (High Environmental Quality)Argex expanded clay aggregates: 100 % environmentally friendly. Unlimited working life.

Lightweight concreteWith argeMIX L the concrete is 80 % lighter than traditional concrete, whilst retaining strength and durability. The low density of the concrete limits the deadweight on the structures of existing buildings. Perfectly suited to renovation.

High compressive strengthDespite its low density, argeMIX L guarantees a high mechanical strength. This insulating concrete is incompressible, even under constant loading.

IncombustibleThe use of expanded clay aggregates, baked at a temperature of 1100 C, providing characteristics classified as Euroclass A1 incombustible.

Thermal and sound insulationThermal insulation slows heat loss. The use of expanded clay aggregates in argeMIX L significantly reduces the heat transfer. The microporous structure of the clay can also reduce noise.

Can be pumpedargeMIX L can be mixed easily using pumps with pneumatic cap with any diameter of pipe.

Quick dryingThanks to the concretes open structure (more than 40 % consists of spaces or voids), consequently argeMIX L dries more quickly than an traditional concrete or screed. Its low water vapour resistance factor () enhances the materials breathing properties.

Easy to useAvailable in 20 litre bags, argeMIX L is a dry mix of cement and expanded clay. Simply add water and the product is ready to use. For easy preparation, use and leveling follow in the method of use on the next page.

  • Lightweight insulating concrete

Method of useInsulating lightweight concrete in four easy steps

    1. Preparation

The code of practice for laying concrete and screeds must be applied! Ensure that the surface is clean (free from dust, oil, waste, etc.) and dampened down slightly (only if laying on a

concrete floor). Provide peripheral insulation (flexible tape) and expansion joints for areas > 25 m. Cover any floor that is porous (e.g. timber structures) and/or sensitive to contact with water with a polythene sheet

(or, if there is a risk of rising damp, under the argeMIX L). Cover electric wiring and heating and sewage/drainage pipes.

    2. Procedure

    1. For each bag of argeMIX L, pour 2 litres of water into the concrete mixer.

    2. Now add the entire contents of the argeMIX L bag to the concrete mixer.

    3. Add a maximum of 0,5 to 1,5 litres of water for each bag of argeMIX L. (total recommended dosage total: 2,5 to 3,5 litres of water per bag)

    4. Mix the whole for 4 to 5 minutes.

    5. The argeMIX L is now ready to use!

    6. Lay the argeMIX L to the desired thickness and to level.

    7. Compact lightly and level with the float.

    8. Protect the concrete against drying out too quickly with a polythene sheet.

    9. Leave the concrete to dry out for 24 hours.

Caution:When using a screed pump, add the total amount of water immediately and increase the amount of water to 3,5 to 4 litres maximum.

    3. Remarks

The maximum working time (time before the concrete goes off) for laying argeMIX L is one hour in normal conditions (no frost, not exposed to the sun).

Caution!: excess water may wash the grains (they become brown) and degrade the quality of the concrete. Please follow the water quantities as instructed. Do not add cement or other inert materials, additives, etc.!

    4. Finishing

    * argeMIX L as a base screed: (caution: argeMIX L is not a finishing screed!)

dampen the hardened argeMIX L lightly (minimum of 24 hours after laying) and then place the argeMIX C (screed) on top to a thickness of at least 5 cm as a finishing screed

provide a reinforcing trellis (in the argeMIX C)

Option to make the finishing screed (argeMIX C) independent of the argeMIX L underscreed by laying an acoustic insulator (elastic layer) between the two screeds.

    * argeMIX L as concrete slope:

apply a smoothing layer of cement mortar, from 1 to 2 cm in thickness to the hardened argeMIX L (minimum of 24 hours after laying)

cover the mortar layer with a seal or add an additional insulation layer according to recommendations

Method of useInsulating lightweight screed in four easy steps

    1. Preparation

The code of practice for laying screeds must be applied! Ensure that the surface is clean (free from dust, oil, waste, etc.) and dampened down slightly (only if laying on a

single layer concrete floor or on argeMIX L). Provide peripheral insulation (flexible tape) and expansion joints over the entire thickness of the argeMIX C for

areas > 25 m or if the length/width ratio of the area is > 3 and if the areas are irregular (L shape, etc.). Cover any electric wiring and heating and sewage/drainage pipes.

    2. Procedure

    1. For each bag of argeMIX C, pour 5 litres of water into the concrete mixer.

    2. Now add the entire contents of the argeMIX C bag to the concrete mixer.

    3. Add a maximum of 2,5 to 3,5 litres of water for each bag of argeMIX C. (total recommended dosage: 7,5 to 8,5 litres of water per bag)

    4. Mix the whole for 4 to 5 minutes.

    5. The argeMIX C is now ready to use (damp earth consistency)!

    6. Lay the argeMIX C to the desired thickness and to level.

    7. Compact lightly and level with the float.*

    8. Protect the mortar against drying out too quickly with a polythene sheet.

    9. Leave the concrete to dry out for at least 24 hours.

    * a power float can be used (i.e. one to two hours after,

    depending on the conditions)

Caution: When using a screed pump, add the total amount of water immediately and increase the amount of water to 3,5 to 4 litres maximum

    3. Remarks

The maximum working time (time before the concrete goes off) for laying argeMIX C is 30 to 60 minutes in normal conditions (no frost, not exposed to the sun).

Caution!: excess water may wash the grains (they become brown) and degrade the quality of the mortar (and extend the drying time). Follow the recommended water dosage, which results in a uniform mortar mix. Depen-ding on the laying conditions (summer and winter), it will be necessary to vary this dosage of water slightly (within the given bracket).

Do not add cement or other inert materials, additives, etc.! Provide a steel reinforcement mesh for the screed. Mortar screed adapted to the inside and outside for laying ceramics for binding or to lay wet on wet or for laying

a sealing membrane in the case of a flat roof, etc.

    4. Finishing

Not suited for laying coverings sensitive to damp (wood block flooring, etc.) or stipulate adequate drying time.

    * argeMIX C as finishing screed: (single layer on concrete floor or screed on argeMIX L)

for laying floor coverings (tiles, natural materials, etc.), minimum of 7 days after laying argeMIX C for laying ceramics, etc. with adhesive or laying wet on wet (do not exceed 10 cm in thickness for argeMIX C)

    * argeMIX C as concrete slope:

apply a layer at least 5 cm thick of argeMIX C on argeMIX L concrete slope then lay the sealing membrane (additional thermal insulation possible - follow the code of practice for flat roofs)

Method of useInsulating lightweight concrete in four easy steps

    1. Preparation

The code of practice for laying traditional concretes must be applied! Ensure that the surface is clean (free from dust, oil, waste, etc.) and dampened down slightly (only if laying on a

concrete floor). Provide peripheral insulation (flexible tape) and expansion joints for areas > 25 m in slab use. Cover any floors that are porous (e.g. timber structures) and/or sensitive to contact with water or with a polythene

    sheet before laying argeMIX S.

    2. Procedure

    1. For each bag of argeMIX S, pour 4 litres of water into the concrete mixer.

    2. Now add the entire contents of the argeMIX S bag to the concrete mixer.

    3. Add a maximum of 0,5 to 0,8 litres of water for each bag of argeMIX S. (total recommended dosage: 4,5 to 4,8 litres of water per bag)

    4. Mix the whole for at least 3 minutes.

    5. The argeMIX S is now ready to use!

    6. Lay according to the desired thickness.

    7. Compact slightly (vibration is required) and level.

    8. Protect the concrete against drying out too quickly, against frost or against rain with a polythene sheet.

    9. Let the concrete dry out for at least 12 hours. (or longer, depending on the application)

    3. Remarks

The maximum working time (time before the concrete goes off) for laying argeMIX S is 45 minutes in normal conditions (no frost, not exposed to the sun). The concrete must remain brilliant, uniform and flexible.

Check the recommended quantity of water carefully! CAUTION! We recommend that you do not exceed the maximum prescribed dosage of water of 4,8 litres. Excess water can wash the grains and degrade the quality of the concrete. Do not add cement or other inert materials, additives, etc!

ArgeMIX S is not a self-leveling concrete. Laying must be supported with vibration. This will be adapted according to the quantity of water (avoid separating the aggregates by excessive vibration).

ArgeMIX S is a lightweight structural concrete for inside and outside use, with a built-in steel reinforcement mesh. In this structural framework (beam, slab, composite floor, etc.) the choice and sizing will be carried out in accordance with the rules and standards in force.

Not adapted in apparent concrete application.

    4. Finishing

A floor slab in argeMIX S is not suitable as a finishing screed incorporating electric wiring, heating and sewage/drainage pipes. ArgeMIX S is mainly a structural concrete. We recommend that you use argeMIX C as a finishing screed (as well as for covering drainpipes).

If site restrictions prevent the laying of a finishing screed (argeMIX C type) before covering, it is possible to bond the tiles directly to the argeMIX S by proceeding in the same way as a traditional concrete. Particular attention will be paid to the smoothing and flatness of the surface of the concrete, as well as to the choice of adhesive.
