Foreword
The prevalence and burden of chronic disease in Ireland has been well established. In response the HSE is moving towards a morepreventive model of healthcare. The HSE has identified ‘promoting health and wellbeing as part of everything we do so that peoplewill be healthier’ as its number one goal. This, in combination with the establishment of a National Health and Wellbeing Divisionand the development of the Healthy Ireland Framework, provides a platform for a culture change across the health services.
Saolta has led the way in Ireland with the publication and delivery of its Healthy Ireland Implementation plan 2015-2017. One ofthe key actions in the plan was to develop a resource to support the health and wellbeing of staff and patients and build capacityto implement health and wellbeing activity. This has now come to fruition.
We hope this new resource will contribute to the three goals of the national Healthy Ireland Implementation Plan of improving staffhealth and wellbeing, reducing the burden of chronic disease and reforming the health services.
Our plan offers a wide range of staff supports for physical and mental health. It provides many health and wellbeing trainingopportunities for staff within the hospital group and in the community. The plan also lists a range of health and wellbeing servicesavailable for our patients. This section in particular will be helpful to staff in identifying health and wellbeing supports for our patients.
We hope you find this plan of value and we thank our all of our partners for their contributions.

Stress control programme- Stress control is a six week programme
that teaches participants to ‘becometheir own therapist’.
- Saolta, in partnership with the dept ofhealth promotion, HSE West, isbringing the programme to staff in2016.

- Supporting Managers in theImplementation of the ‘Prevention andManagement of Stress in theWorkplace Policy’ through training andindividual support.
- WRAP is a 2.5 day seminar which helpsyou to monitor and manage yourmental health. WRAP helps you to:

- The HSE introduced a Calorie PostingPolicy in 2015 across Irish Hospitals toraise awareness of the calorie contentof food.
- Calorie posting aims to make thehealthier choice the easier choice forstaff, patients and visitors to hospitals.
- Calorie posting was implemented forbreakfast items across the Saolta groupin 2015 and lunch items will be calorieposted in 2016.

Physical activity - www.getirelandactive.ie is a one-stopshop for physical activity information.It is a user-friendly website that aims toencourage people to become morephysically active by creating awarenessof the opportunities for physical activityat local, regional and national levels. - This policy has been developed toclarify specifics of Transgender Equalityissues for the various staffdisciplines/groupings within the SaoltaUniversity Health Care Group.
- Saolta maintains strict Equality andDignity at Work policies (see Dignity atWork Policy for the Health Service) thatprohibits the discrimination against, orthe harassment of, employees based onseveral grounds, including their genderidentity/expression and/or sexualorientation.
