Rushmoor is a hive ofactivity this autumnBy Cllr Peter Moyle, Leader of

Rushmoor Borough Council

Hello and welcometo the Septemberedition of Arena

magazine. I hope you allenjoyed the summer, despite the weather. Asalways, Arena is jam-packed full of localinformation, news, activities and events tokeep you all entertained.

One of my summer highlights was seeing all thewonderful floral displays and gardens as part of thisyear’s Rushmoor in Bloom. Rushmoor’s gardenersand community groups never disappoint and we havefeatured a selection photographs from some of thebest entries on the front cover. I’d like to thankpersonally everyone who takes part, making thecompetition so special every year.

I was thrilled to hear that the Rowhill NatureReserve Society has been awarded the Queen’sAward for Voluntary Services. This is a prestigiousaward known as the ‘MBE’ of community awards andit is real testament to the team of volunteers who lookafter the reserve. Congratulations to you all.

The summer is often the time of year when peoplemove house – and that’s been the case for SamuelCody Specialist Sports College, which has moved to anew home at the former Oak Farm School campus inFarnborough. The campus also offers many adulteducation and community classes – see page 6.

It seems a long time since the elections, so in thisedition we’ve included a handy summary of yourlocal councillors for 2011/12 and how you can get intouch with them. It’s also the time of year when youneed to check that your details are correct on theElectoral Register – see page 8 to find out more.

Wellington Avenue, Aldershot has been a hive ofactivity over the last couple of months, with teams ofbuilders hard at work. Most of the work to preparethe site is now complete and it won’t be long beforewe can see the new cinema and restaurant complextaking shape. You can find out more on page 10.

Our plans for a cinema complex in Farnboroughcontinue to move ahead and we are currently in talkswith the developer and a cinema operator. We hopeto be able to report on this in Arena soon. In themeantime, the developer is continuing to market thecentre to new traders, building on the success of theNew Look store which opened earlier this year.

I hope you enjoy reading everything we’ve includedin this edition. Arena will be back in November – justin time for Christmas!

A campaign to steer teenagers awayfrom smoking is gathering paceacross Rushmoor, thanks to thevigilance of local shopkeepers.A trading standards initiative to see

if local shops would serve a 16-year-old ‘volunteer’ saw all stores targetedin the test refuse to sell cigarettes tothe youngster.Hampshire County Council Trading

Standards is concerned aboutcounterfeit hand-rolling tobacco beingsold, which in many cases containsunregulated chemicals that are evenmore harmful to health.Chewing tobacco has also been

found on sale that does not display

the necessary health warnings.Quit4Life, Hampshire’s NHS Stop

Smoking Service, is helping more andmore smokers to quit.Last year, the team saw a 15%

increase in the number of smokersgiving up in Rushmoor, compared with2009.However, Rushmoor still has the

second highest number of smokerslighting up in Hampshire. This is why Hampshire County

Council Trading Standards, Quit4Lifeand Rushmoor Borough Council areworking alongside retailers andresidents to help teenagers avoid life-long addiction and ‘nip it in the bud’.

“Protect your children,” said atrading standards spokesperson.“Illegal, cheap tobacco makes it easierfor youngsters to take up the habitand can be a barrier to those whowould like to quit.”

They are supposedto be incrediblyprivate, but thispurple emperorcertainly wasn’tcamera shy.

Paying an unexpected visitto Ash Lock Cottage – theHQ for the BlackwaterValley CountrysidePartnership – this beautifulbutterfly simply flew inthrough a window andeventually settled on thecamera.

It posed elegantly forsome time while staff clickedaway with their cameras, even settling on one of themfor a while, before it flewaway.

“It’s not that often thatyou get to even see a purpleemperor, let alone anopportunity to get up closeto one,” said ChristineReeves, visitor promotionsofficer.

“These butterflies are

fairly elusive and arenormally only spotted flyingaround the tops of old oaktrees. This is the first onewe’ve ever seen here.”

The Blackwater Valley is ahaven for stunning wildlifesuch as this, but alsowelcomes visitors interestedin watersports, walking, riding, angling, golf and
