Nomenclature Note: The lovely purple, lavender, and mauve shades of many hybrids trace to the combination of the blue pigments from Lobelia siphilitica with the red and pink ones of Lobelia cardinalis and L. fulgens. The blend of the first two species is known as Lobelia x gerardii while the merger of all three is Lobelia x speciosa. Breeders do not always release the parentages and sometimes do not know themselves what wonders nature has wrought. To which of the two hybrids species a cultivar may belong is therefore not always clear, even after morphological examination. Therefore many cultivars are assigned after the genus name. In some cases we have retained the cultivar assignments of Lobelia experts and other authors.
