SITE AND OVERALL GOAL Strategic project for revitalizing Constantin Mille Street, an old cultural area in Bucharest, Romania. The first step in the grander scheme was bringing back to life the Adevarul Pal-ace, an iconic construction made in 1898-1903.The Palace is composed of both eclectic French interiors and industrial production quarters. The new func tion is that of a muse-um dedicated to the Romanian Press situated at the inferior floors and that of a creative business hub at the upper ones. Most of the space is dedicated to the creative busi-ness because of the technology implemented in the building, as found at BCN FAB LAB GENERAL CONCEPTIn essence the concept of the project is exploring the boundaries be-tween ornament and function. Since the heritage buildings present both, the challenge was to create a symbiosis between the two, as in the works of Farshid Moussavi’s the conclusion was that of a functional ornament.

INTERVENTION SCHEME [Reinterpret the main functions into a contemporary indispensable manner]

The intervention is composed of 3 main buildings, 2 are existing heri-tage buildings and a 3-rd one that is proposed with functions that are in-dispensable in the area, according to Romanian Legislation [PUZ/PUD]. All the heritage buildings are designed with the outmost respect to the exist-ing fabric while the intervention inside is bold and manifesto type oriented. MAIN FUNCTIONSIf one looks at the intervention as a hole, the main function is that of a alter-native cultural centre at ground and first floor. As you get a better sense of the building you discover museum area and working spots that are all con-nected by pedestrian bridges that oversee the city.

Overall Area of intervention: 3.000 msq

PLANS Since it is a intervention proposal, the plans are composed of 3 different col-ors expressing either existent elements / intervention or demolished. It must be pointed out that the biggest intervention was done in the interior quart-yard of the Adevarul Palace, as more light was needed for different cul-tural activities. It is also vital for better understanding that the shades of grey represent different heights of the floor, as existent in the original plans.

[The overall number of floors is 6 + 1 underground floor/ for better comprehen-sion the main floors are shown]

DIAGRAMS The diagrams made for the project follow the same language as the plans, show-ing with different colors existent elements and interventions. Also they show an overall idea of the human interaction that is possible in un adaptable building.

PROPOSED FACADES FOR THE INTERVENTION

FACADES & SECTIONS

Both the facades and sections have the same coherent language as the floor plans. The main purpose was preserving the existent and continuing the origi-nal work of the architect, such as in the main facade of Cinema Capitol [Mod-ernist Bauhaus]. Using local, accessible materials such as the existing brick work of the walls, one can read from the exterior the hierarchy of the interi-or functions. A somewhat phantasmagorical intervention was done with a me-tallic structure that acts as a binding element between the 3 buildings. Acting both as solar shading and as supporting structure for the new planted green-ery, the structure is a well needed element on a street deprived of vegetation.

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS

The main theme was to create a masterplan in-tervention of the existing 150ha Duzce Univer-sity Campus in Turkey. There also was needed an Architecture & Art Faculty, a Cultural Center and an extension of the existing buildings. All of them connected by a series of pedestrian walk-ways that would emphasize the existing terrain.

CONCEPT

The team worked on a concept that would tran-scend the main characteristics from the existing terrain to the built one. Solving the actual prob-lems of the campus such as circulation, con-nectivity and relationship between all the de-partments of the campus was the main goal for the intervention. Thus, the team elaborated a se-ries of paths that are born from the natural ter-rain that offer both privacy and connectivity for the students & staff and the multitude of depart-ments. With the help of a series of roads that bor-der the Campus site that are destined only for pub-lic transport, the main campus area was left an eco-friendly space, only for pedestrians and bikers.

DIAGRAMS

After a meticulous concept development with the team, we worked on a solution that is favor-able to users of the space and the natural environ-ment. The diagrams show in a schematic manner the circulation in a process development manner, paths for cars [in this case they are at the extrem-ities of the campsite] and a series of pedestrian walkways that rise from the surrounding terrain.

SITE PARTICULARITIES

The Atakoy area is situated on the west side of Istan-bul, close to the Marmara Sea. The area is an import-ant medical center for both research and treatment.

CONCEPT

Being also one of the most polluted and transited ar-eas in Istanbul the proposed project was conceived by the team as a sustainable one. With the help of climate monitoring software, such as ECOTECH the team was able to create a solution that responds to all the LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environment Design] requirements. The most important aspect of the building sustainability is given by its passive dou-ble façade, that was strategically placed on the side of the building most exposed to NOX-s and VOC-s. An-other technology that was implemented in the build-ing was the TIO2 pulverization on the main facade.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVES OF THE DWELLINGS

TEAM Adelina Elena Barbu / Oana Bacu / Marius Balașca / Andrei Lazăr / Ileana Cristina Bălan

PROBLEM The purpose of the presented projects is to resolve one of the most important contemporary problems re-garding dwellings in Bucharest. Residential complexes built in the 50’s and 60’s have had one purpose, that of a place where one can sleep. With the cheap, prefabricated materials, these types of residential complexes typolo-gies extended to other cities not only Bucharest. With the downfall of the communist regime in Romania, its citizens wanted more from a place they called home.

SOLUTIONThe solution found was not a universal one applied by copy-paste-ing to all the dwellings in Romania, but a series of questions that could ripple different solutions according to the area of intervention. The proposed extension of the dwellings had to be flexible, adaptable, sustainable and nevertheless a place where every inhabitant felt at home. Thus regarding the dwelling typology in Bucharest we implemented a project based on interdependence be-tween different quartyards that are in vicinity. A scenario is shown on the right side when the interdepen-dence is determined by functions such as that of a school-a urban garden and a sport/ leisure quartyard.

STRATEGY

As a main approach the team came up not with a copy-paste solution but with a series of questions that could ripple different solutions according to the con-text of implementation. Thus it is crucial for any new intervention into existing fabric to make a SITE ANALYSIS first after which a LOCAL IDENTITY can be found out. It is crucial to keep a constant COMUNICATION WITH RESI-DENTS to better IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. After all this is done, a solution can be implemented as long as it is done with right RECYCLED MATERIALS that have a LOW IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT. And last but not least it is vi-tal for future generations and for our own humanity to always search and imple-ment ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES.

IMPLEMENTATION

Having in mind our strategy we came up with a solution that will help both eco-nomically and time wise dwellings. The new apartments will be made of cargo containers that have different technologies implemented such as new pipe sys-tem that reuses grey water or filters it. Also implemented rain water umbrellas and photovoltaic panels that will help the residence have a better lifestyle.

DIAGRAM SECTION WITH TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION [WATER SYSTEM AND PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS]

DIAGRAMS WITH WATER FILTRATION / CAPTATION AND PHOTOVOLTAIC PANEL IMPLEMENTATION

SUSTAINABLE DIAGRAMS [WATER]All the technology implemented has data that show how if designing responsibly with new pipe system, filtering the water [sand & reedbed] and using umbrellas as capitation system for rain water improve water usage. Thus with all these a person will consumes now 150L instead of 250L/day as in normal use.

[ENERGY]With roof photovoltaic panels, both the residence and the general infrastructure of the quartyard benefit. As a normal family of 4 uses approx. 300KwH/month all this needed energy is possible with photovoltaic panels implementation on 80% of the roof area.

[PARKING]As for the parking, with a smart parking system, that lets you stack on 1 parking lot up to 10 cars, we were able to free the inner quartyard and stack on 280msq/floor around 200 cars.

[All the implemented technology can be better seen in both the diagrams of the overall site as well as the detailed apartment plans]

PROJECT 86- INNOVATIVE PROTOTYPING [2013][Dynamic Fields Workshop][Portfolio-Based Scholarship Participation]

CONCEPTA dynamic structure formed of diamond shaped modules having flexible joints which allow the in-terconnected parts to react at an individual lev-el or as an integrative system. The final project was the result of an intensive testing of various iterations. The idea was to create a structure having moving parts and allowing it to constant-ly adapt and change to its surrounding envi-ronment and in particular, to the airflow creat-ed by the industrial fans strategically placed to create a pleasant movement. The system acts as a structural membrane which mediated the airflow, becoming a synergy between the me-chanical forces and the structure itself, thus the modules undergo translation and axis variation, each of them being independently dynamic, but within the structure being interdependent.

MODERN SCHOOL IN GAZIANTEP [2014][Isover Contest]

TEAM Adelina Barbu / Oana Bacu / Ileana Cristina Bălan

CONCEPT[Geometry and Patterns]

Since a carpet is more of a work of art, each design has a deeper meaning. A carpet is more likely to a poem, neither can tolerate any extra element whichdoes not contribute to its wholeness and value. Therefore, just like a poem, each pattern of car-pet is like each verse of a poem. It is chosen for its beauty and the motifs are carefully arranged to form rhymes of fascinating Turkish carpets...Motifs in Turkish rugs are a complete language [Rungs-Ori-ental].

The presented project has the main purpose of adapting the space around it to its end-users, the children, of various ages. The plan is composed of sliding walls, just like Aladdin’s carpet, that contract and expand according to the number of children in the classroom.

FUNCTION DIAGRAMS[adapt and play]

The interior floorplan of the school was conceived so that the chil-dren and staff benefit from it as much as possible. This means that the space inside had to work well for the kids are more introvert or extrovert, to large classes and small ones. Thus like Aladdin’s carpet, the walls can move and shift according to their need. One space can be for a couple of hours a classroom and then be trans-formed into a library. Functions such as cafeteria, that only work for a limited time every day can be minimized according to need and be transformed in open play areas or classrooms.

The building is designed as having an interior quartyard that extends inside with a greenhouse that acts as the heart of the building. From it all the spaces can be reached.

The circulation inside the school is also adaptable as well, since kids love to play, they have a multitude of paths that led them to their wanted spaces.

TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTED

Tapping into piezoelectricity, we created a series of colourful walkways that have a specific colour according to their end des-tination. The system works only during recess or when enough kids are playing on the generating panels.

Because of the sites constrains the overall volume is terraces. This as well we used to the areas full capacity, creating greenery, vegetation and spaces where the kids can have classes or can play outside.

MAIN FACADES OF THE SCHOOL

Page 27: Architecture Portfolio [2012-2015] Ileana Cristina Balan

FACADES & SECTIONS

Our biggest constrains were the site angle and its limited high [of maximum 12m]. Using these constrains as a asset we created entries on both sides of the hill, making circulation more playful. This in term generated a terraced type of volume that determined specious terraces were the kids can play.

Since our plan was from the start to make the building as sustainable as possible, the team had to work out a series of solutions that were viable in the area but also that were testing the boundaries between what is ornament and function. Thus we created on the facades a series of wooden sandwich panels that are hy-groscopic [on the outside] and hydrophobic [on the inside] that capture the humidity in the air. This water was then stored publicly, filtered with reed-bed and then used inside the build-ing.

SITE AREA Lipscani Street - Gabroveni Street, Historical Center, Bucharest, Romania

MAIN FUNCTION Art Expo / Commercial / Retail

CONCEPT

The projects aim was to create a Visual Arts Center in Bucharest’s center. In the sense of a space dedicated to small installations, a series of art galleries and retail spaces. The site is sit-uated in one of the densest and the most rap-idly changing places in the city. The functions in this part of town change every 2 or 3 months. In order to propose something that will be last-ing, I created a space that is very flexible and adaptable to any type of comercial/public function while keeping the GENIUS LOCI alive. This, in term generated a very dynamic build-ing, containing a parasite structure inspired by the japanese cidori.

Page 30: Architecture Portfolio [2012-2015] Ileana Cristina Balan

FACADES & SECTIONS

Since the space was designed as a adaptable com-mercial and retail area on the interior. this had to be reflected as well on the outside. Using the Japa-nese cidori structure you could reflect how the area is in constant change. Having a unfinished-type of language, the wood structure deforms and dissolves on a finished and regular surface.

In the sections, the cidori elements en-ters the quartyard of the building acting both as a structure for the elevator as well as an installation that is pleasing to the eye.

Along with a series of ramps that are ex-ternal to the main building the structure flows through the functions of the building.

Page 31: Architecture Portfolio [2012-2015] Ileana Cristina Balan

INTERIOR SPACE

The same reinterpretation of the cidori ele-ment was done on the inside as well. The structure acts as a surface from which oth-er elements can interact creating private change rooms or simply dividing the space up.

The element can be well seen at the main en-trance of the space. With a series of cuts done on the vertical axis of the building the cidori structure enters gradually the whole building. If looked at from the bottom floor, the structure seems endless, more elaborate then it already is. It has a somewhat mirage effect on its users.

The space proposed craves for attention and exploration, characteristics that are in essence that of the area where the intervention is made. The old city in Bucharest is such a diverse and flamboyant place that is very easy to lose your-self in the process and simply become part of it.

GENERAL DIAGRAM OF PROPOSED FOR WATER FILTRATION WITH THE USE OF REEDBED IN PIAZZETTA

OVERALL GROUP PROPOSALS FOR SAME SITE ACCENTUATING WATER RECYCLE / FILTRATION AND STORAGE IN ALL SEASONSSITEAlghero is situated in Sardinia ,Italy. The city has a Mediterranean climate, making it have long, hot summers and short, rainy winters.

CHALLENGEThe workshop was designed as a imagina-tion exercise in which we had to predict with data how the cities will look like in 2050. For a simple understanding we had to foc us on only one resource. In the chase of rain water, by 2050 we predicted an average rain wa-ter of 660mm/ year in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy.

PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONSThe rain water that falls in the city will be captured by umbrella like structures and by normal street drains. For the piazzettas, I arranged an installation that mirrors the ter-ritorial characteristics of Alghero. The instal-lation is made out of the same material that bends and stretches creating spaces to sit or lie down. The umbrellas that cover the pro-posed piazzeta are made to open and close according to the needs of the inhabitants of the city. At the margins of the installation there are reed-beds that filter the rain-water.
