Reaction from Space Agencies

• Creation of a Joint Climate Working group (JCWG) – gathering the space agencies represented in CEOS and CGMS

Objective of the JCWG

• To develop a strategy, bringing together space agencies and their coordinating bodies, to create an end-to-end system for the delivery of long-term and sustained observations of the Earth’s climate system;

• To define both a logical and physical architecture for the sustained delivery of these observations of the Earth’s climate system, and

• To ultimately create a global observing system for climate which builds upon existing systems including international agreements for standards, contingency planning, quality assurance and quality control, inter-calibration and broad, open data-sharing policies

The Climate Architecture for CM from space

2013“This report focuses on satellite observations for climate monitoring from

space, and the need for an international architecture that ensures delivery of these observations over the time frames required for analysis of the Earth’s climate system. The report outlines a strategy for such an architecture – a strategy that is intentionally high-level, conceptual and

inclusive, so that broad consensus can be reached, and all relevant entities can identify their potential contributions.”

The ECV Inventory

• In response to the challenge of monitoring climate from space, CEOS, CGMS and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) have developed a global architecture for climate monitoring from space that has been specifically constructed in response to GCOS needs and requirements.

• In this context, the WG Climate is the central focal point for the collection and provision of long-term Climate Data Records. This is achieved through the ECV Inventory.

The ECV Inventory

The Essential Climate Variable (ECV) Inventory houses information on Climate Data Records (CDR) provided by CEOS and CGMS member agencies. The Inventory is a structured repository for the characteristics of two types of ECV CDRs:

• Climate data records that exist and are accessible;• Climate data records that are planned to be delivered as part of an

already approved programme of an individual or several agencies
