One of the President’s responsibilities is to provide long range planning.

This year we had the fortunate use

of the James Rose Center for our August Board of Trustees’ event. We used the opportunity to prepare for our long range planning. AIA National has a toolkit called the “Weave”; it is a method that the national office, as well as many compo-nents throughout the country, used for their strategic plan. The “Weave” was designed for us to have a cohesive organization that shares common vision, mission, goals and objectives. It is organized in a matrix format. The process helps us identify if our component shares the national vision, mission and objectives and also helps us develop our own strategic plan and action plan for our component. The “Weave” matrix allow us to see clearly if we are organized to fulfill the goals for membership, organization and community. I was pleasantly surprised that most of our comittees are already part of the strategy to fulfill our organization and membership needs. The area in which we show weakness involves how we represent ourselves to our community and society. Our officers and Board of Trustees spent the entire evening suggesting new ideas and directions to improve our organization as we move into the future. The purpose was to strengthen the public’s perception of AIA, and how we as a local component can become more involved with our community through our activities, public relation, communication and alliance with other professions to improve the image of Architects.

For the future of AIA, Yours Truly,

Ben P. lee, AiA

Leagueline 4Q 2011 The Quarterly Newsletter of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey

This year we decided to open the box a bit more and ask you all to illustrate “Summer 2011” via your visual image(s). This is in keeping with the 4Q edition of Leagueline being a pictorial essay on a subject, whether that be our talent and passion, our work or inventive business ideas and strategies. This year we are decompressing, hoping you all had a good summer. We asked you to share with your colleagues something about the summer/vacation – travel view, seen building, foodie picture – whatever, but with an especially captivating image. Architects are visual creatures and we often see and save what others may pass by without special notice. We editors even sweetened the deal by offering you the chance to win an object of great design (Alvar Aalto’s classic vase) for your taking of some time and effort to select and share that exceptional image. The photos were slow in coming at the start, but by the end, ALNNJ members did respond as they have in the past. We have been rewarded for the concept with some truly wonderful photographs. It was not easy to select, and not possible to rate those which most caught our attention, so we just note those three images which we all found most spectacular. Thanks to all participants. We hope to see you all at the membership meeting to be announced when we will further share these images and reward the “winners”.Fay W. Logan, AIA, LEED AP BD+C4Q Editor
