at the August 19th General Membership Meeting at the Evansville Country Club. President-Elect, Lisa Vaughan, welcomed everyone to the new League year on behalf of President Jamie Scales, who was on maternity leave.

The first meeting was full of the great stuff you can expect from JLE, including the presentation of the Done-In-A-Day $1,000 Grant to Ruth’s House.

Throughout the year, JLE gives out grants and partners with many people, community organizations and businesses to help our community get healthier, more empowered and to give help when and where it is needed most. To emphasize that idea, President Jamie Scales has deemed this year Team JLE. “Our goal is to work together as League members with our community and corporate partners to make Evansville the best place it can be,” Jamie said. “We want to encourage everyone to join our ‘team’. Part of the fun of the first GM included the introduction of the hashtag #JLE2014. Many members got immediately into the spirit of Team JLE by taking team selfies!

In Her Own Words...New Beginnings.

As my husband and I welcome our first child into the world, it’s something I think about a lot. Life is full of new opportunities and chances to make the world a better place for future generations. The Junior League of Evansville provides us with an avenue to make these opportunities into realities. This year is already full of new ideas and some traditional favorites.

In August, we welcomed 25 new Provisionals to our League. These fabulous women will spend the next few months learning about Junior League, our traditions and history. We also had the opportunity to work with Women’s Closet Exchange on a successful new fundraiser: Confessions of a Shopaholic dinner and designer style and trunk show. We are excited to continue a tradition re-started last year by hosting our General Membership meetings at the Evansville Country Club. We were fortunate to be able to partner with 14 WFIE to record a commercial about JLE that will air periodically on the station. This is a great way to remind the city of our past and future impact and also a way for us to recruit new women to help in furthering our mission.

October will bring our annual “Show Us What You Got” showcase at the general membership meeting. This showcase allows our members to display their local businesses, giving all of us an opportunity to support them. September also brings us one step closer to our annual River City Rummage Sale, held October 24 -25. We are excited to announce a new location for the sale this year, inside a storefront in the Lawndale shopping complex on South Green River Road. The hard working rummage sale committee is collecting rummage now.

As we begin this new league year, I’m excited to see what wonderful opportunities it will bring for our community. Whether it’s new ideas or tried and true traditions, one thing is certain… this year will be spectacular!

Sincerely,

Jamie Scales

SUMMER FUN – by Amber Combs

Summer “break” was anything but for the ladies of JLE! With many committees off and running for the new league year; this summer kept the local leaguers busy from recruiting, to DIADs, and the big “Confessions of a Shopaholic” style show with collaboration from the Women’s Closet Exchange of St Louis.

Stars from the show “Retail Royalty” were on hand, and many JLE ladies modeled their wares. See full story on page 6.

The summer kicked off with the first “GLOW Run,” and was met with much excitement from the community. This summer also provided many fun opportunities for DIAD hours, which included “Trucks and Heroes,” SMILE on Down Syndrome, “Frog Follies,” and more. Thank you to all who completed DIAD hours this summer, along with those who volunteered for “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and continue to support the various organizations and events in our community through volunteerism.

The recruitment committee is one that never stops. These ladies are always looking to boost JLE by educating and onboarding new members. Their summer was busy hosting recruitment parties in June and July at the Reitz Home and area libraries, leading to the wonderful group of ladies making up the 2014 Provisional class. Welcome ladies!

The summer closed with the first General Membership meeting on August 19th. The first Project of the Month for the 2014 league year was United Caring Shelters Inc.’s Ruth’s House. Also highlighted at the meeting was the new hashtag #JLE2014, and many ladies had fun trending the hashtag with tagged selfies from the meeting.

Welcome 2014-15 Provisionals!-by Vicki McDonald

On Saturday, August 2, at Wesselman Nature Society, the Junior League of Evansville welcomed 25 women to its 2014-2015 Provisional Class.

Decked out in matching referee shirts, the Membership Development co-chairs, Stephanie Norrick and Cheryl Martin, perfectly executed the playbook of Team JLE with megaphones, pompoms and a few cheers throughout the day!

The day opened with a breakfast straight from the pages of the official Junior League of Evansville’s Once Upon A Time award-winning cookbook provided by Cookbook Chair, Tiffany Boyd, and her committee.

The formal part of the day began with pep talks from Coach (aka President) Jamie Scales and Assistant Coach (aka President-Elect) Lisa Vaughn. Membership Development Committee members Ashley Dunn, Natalie O’Daniel, Mary Rokicki and Angie Schaffstein along with the co-chairs Norrick and Martin, educated the new Provisionals on the Junior League of Evansville and its history.

During a delicious lunch donated by Chik-Fil-A, Dr. John Scott Foster, the Executive Director of Wesselman Nature Society,

and a staff member provided the half-time entertainment with a guest appearance by some resident birds. For those unable to make the original Provisional Retreat date, there was a make-up session at the YWCA on Tuesday, August 12.

GRAND OPENING | SEPTEMBER 18TH

Women Around the World – by Stephanie Gerhardt

The Association of Junior Leagues International’s Global Continuum is a work in progress by the AJLI board to explore “what women around the world mean to The Junior League”. A few years ago the board formed the Global Continuum Committee to further explore the possibilities of global expansion. They sent a survey to 10,000 random League members to find out more about their international experiences and interest in global issues. The results of the survey indicated that Junior League members had a strong interest in expanding the League internationally, and looking for volunteer opportunities outside its current borders. Currently there are only eight leagues outside the United States.

According to AJLI board member Deann Cook, the committee came up with three questions: How do they go about expanding The Junior League globally? How can they strengthen relationships with other women’s organizations that do similar work? How do they provide opportunities for members to volunteer internationally?

The focus on her talk at the 2014 AJLI Annual Conference in St. Louis focused on the third question-How to provide opportunities for members to volunteer internationally? The outcome of this question is a partnership with the nonprofit organization, Cross-Cultural Solutions. This organization “offers Junior Leagues and their members the opportunity to

volunteer internationally, and connect with global communities. The first trip has already been set to Guatemala in January 2015. For more information about this trip, you can visit www.ajli.org/?nd=benefits_ccs.

Cross-Cultural Solutions will help any League plan a trip for its members. From their page-“they will help you customize a trip for your League. You and your League can volunteer together, grow together, learn together, and raise funds all while changing your lives and those of others. You can choose from one of ten countries around the world to immerse yourself and your League members in, learn the culture, and customize speakers and programs just for your team.”

For more information about Women Around the World you can visit AJLI’s site at www.ajli.org/?nd=womenaroundtheworld.

JLE Struts its Stuff at the Confessions of a Shopaholic Runway Event and Trunk Show-by Vicki McDonald

On August 7, almost 200 “shopaholics” descended on the Holiday Inn Ballroom for the Confessions of a Shopaholic Designer Runway Event and Trunk Show. This event was a partnership between the Junior League of Evansville and the Women’s Closet Exchange Designer Resale Boutique in St. Louis, MO.

After dinner of chicken Picatta, JLE members strutted their stuff down the catwalk wearing items from designers such as, Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and more. Attendees were dancing in their seats to the upbeat music while taking note of the items the models were wearing from the Women’s Closet Exchange that would be available for purchase afterwards. Once the lights came up, the racks were rolled out and the shopping frenzy began. Lucky shoppers picked up Dolce & Gabbana shoes, Coach bags, Chanel jackets and much more all at a fraction of the original designer prices.

The idea for this event started back in December of 2013 when several JLE members attended the December mini-meeting shopping trip to St. Louis. While there, the ladies visited the Women’s Closet Exchange Designer Resale Boutique owned by the stars of the reality TV show “Resale Royalty.” Sue McCarthy and daughters, Diana and Laura, lead one of the best resale boutiques in the country specializing in brands like Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, Chanel and Marc Jacobs, all in pristine condition.

Always making new friends and brimming with new ideas, the ladies posed the question, “Could we convince these ladies to come to Evansville, put on a Designer Runway Show and get Tri-State ladies out to shop all while raising money for a worthy nonprofit organization?” The answer to all was a resounding, YES!

Before the Runway portion began, co-chair of the event, Lisa Vaughn, reminded everyone that while the fashions were hot and the bargains were big, the effect that all those shoppers ultimately had was to help our community be better fed, clothed and housed through the proceeds of their dinner ticket – a definite win, win for the attendees and our community.

An extra special thank you to the event sponsors, Women’s Closet Exchange, Bauer’s Tents and Party Rentals, Dillard’s Department Store, Holiday Inn, Natalie Martin, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Superior Entertainment.

2014 Executive Board Spotlight – Lori Samples-by MaNissa Onstott-Lemon

I learned about the Junior League of Evansville through my friend, Lisa Vaughan. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity to serve our community. Little did I know that the Junior League of Evansville was more than that! I knew I wanted to join a group that’s purpose was service, and that’s what I found in the Junior League. I have always had a desire to help people, and volunteering has allowed me to continue to do just that. The volunteer hours I have done through the JLE have brought tears to my eyes and also laughter in my heart. Volunteering has made me a better person and a servant to others. Not only have I been blessed to be a part of the process in helping others, I have started to set an example for my 2 ½ year old son. My desire is that he will want to volunteer when he gets older.

Throughout my four years in the League, I learned more about Evansville and other nonprofits than I ever knew existed, and I have lived in Evansville most of my life. I have gained continued life skills that have helped me personally and professionally. These skills have allowed me to grow in my career and create a great network of supportive women. Most importantly, I have gained friendships! These friends are women that I have ran a marathon with, who have thrown a baby shower for me, have a glass of wine with, cheer on my successes and can count on during a time of need. I can’t imagine the last four years without these amazing women!

My love and passion for the League drove me to decide to pursue a JLE Board position. I felt like I could use my passion for what JLE’s mission is and become a part of the process in building and training future leaders of the league. I cannot wait to see what this year will bring and the greatness and leadership that will flourish in our members. And just as my JLE friends have done for me in the past, I will be there for the future members of JLE cheering and celebrating in their successes.

Members of the Month -by MaNissa Onstott-Lemon

AUGUSTWhen not participating in her fifth year

in the Junior League, Molly Welch is a content writer for websites. She develops web content for Highland Veterinary Clinic and performs social networking and internet marketing for her sister, Melissa Gormley’s company, Nourish of Evansville. Molly is passionate about giving back to the community and is always willing to use her technical skills

wherever is needed. Molly took on the monumental task of updating and learning about our website, which needed to be upgraded to a new program. Taking on this job, meant dedicating time to learn all the new features of the website, and then seamlessly transitioning to the new program. Much of Molly’s work was done behind the scenes, so our membership noticed very few changes to the site but is now operating better than ever thanks to Molly!

SEPTEMBER For the month of September, we

have two outstanding JLE members to recognize! Tiffany Boyd and Erika Qualls-Barnett are active, dedicated new JLE active members.

When not checking patient information for accuracy and completion, Tiffany Boyd is an active new JLE member. As a provisional, Tiffany was very busy fulfilling her required volunteer hours and then some. Her fellow September member of the month, Erika Barnett shows her love of children by reading to children at the public library and helping out in the community.

Last year, both Tiffany and Erika participated in every DIAD for cMoe that came available. This year, they have both stepped up to help be a part of the planning committee for cMoe’s Breakfast

with the Sugarplum Fairy. Ashley McReynolds, Director of Marketing & Development for cMoe, said that Tiffany and Erika make her job easier, and that they do a fantastic job of representing JLE! Thank you ladies for representing the true spirit of JLE!

JLE Endowment Fund: The Gift that Keeps Growingby Katie Sims

Last year the Junior League of Evansville launched the JLE Endowment Fund – an investment aimed at providing the League with a perpetual source of revenue. Through this fund, League supporters have the opportunity to give a gift that will preserve, protect and widen our philanthropic footprint in the community for years to come.

How Does it Work?Donations to the Endowment Fund become principal that

is invested to create interest income. Once the fund reaches a $100,000 level for four consecutive quarters, a percentage of the interest will become available for the League to use in support of its projects and programs, operating expenses and capital projects. This approach will help ensure the long-term financial security of JLE.

Why Does JLE need an Endowment Fund? The League raises most of its funds for community programs

from yearly fundraisers such as the Rockin River City Rummage Sale, Rockin River City Bike Ride and the JLE Cookbook. While these fundraisers are the primary source of income, the revenue generated varies from year to year – but the needs in our community continue to grow. The JLE Endowment Fund will sustain the future of the League and its ability to meet these community needs.

What is the Benefit of Donating? There are many reasons to donate to the JLE Endowment Fund:

• To honor family, friends, events and remembrances• Flexible donation options: – Multi-year pledges or one-time gift (cash, checks or

credit card contributions) – Stocks and bonds – Bequests, estates, wills and trusts• Tax deductible, in whole or in part; please check with your

accountant for specific details related to your donation.

How do I Give?Call the League office at (812) 434-6710 or mail your

contribution to: Junior League of Evansville, 123 NW Fourth Street, Suite 422, Evansville, IN 47708. For additional information, contact Office Manager, Melissa Wagner at [email protected].

Contributions to the JLE Endowment Fund are considered contributions to a charitable and educational organization under the IRS Code 501(c)(3) and, as such, are tax deductible to the donor.
