PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

20th Sunday of the Year, B, August 19, 2018

My fl esh is true food

The sixth chapter of the gospel of John is a masterpiece of the theology of the Eucharist. St. John puts this in the context of the Passover, a feast that had evolved from a combination of two Jewish celebrations: the exodus liberation from Egypt and the celebration of the barley harvest known as the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. In the Passover celebration, the people recall God’s actions in protecting them from the Egyptians and providing manna for them to eat in the desert. The feast was in thanksgiving to God for his salvation and his providence.

In the Eucharist, Jesus, our Passover lamb invites us to feed on him so that we may truly have life. He is the bread that nourishes and sustains us much more than the manna in the desert. He said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my fl esh for the life of the world.” Jesus gave his life for us and his blood was poured out for us on the cross of Calvary. At Mass, we recall this self-giving of Christ for our salvation. As we partake in the Eucharist, we follow Christ’s injunction to eat of his body and drink of his blood. The Eucharist is real food and drink and the real Jesus in his humanity and divinity. While the people were wondering what Jesus meant by giving his fl esh to them to eat, Jesus emphasized that his fl esh is real: “For my fl esh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my fl esh and drink my blood remains in me and I in him” (John 6:54).

When we honor an invitation for a banquet, we always go prepared for the feast. Often time we dress well, fast a little so that we would enjoy every meal that is served. This should be true for our Sunday worship and Eucharistic celebration and reception. The invitation of Jesus for us to eat his fl esh and drink his blood so that we may have life requires some preparation on our part. “To prepare for worthy reception of this sacrament, the faithful should ob-serve the fast required in their Church. Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1387).

St. Paul urges us to examine our conscience: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man/woman examine him/her-self, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself” (1Cor. 11:27-29). As we partake of the Eucharist, we must also allow its meaning to refl ect in our lives. The one we received poured out his life for our sake. Accordingly, we will participate fully in the benefi ts of the Eucharist only to the extent that we imitate, in all aspects of our lives, the generosity and unselfi sh-ness that we see in the life and death of Jesus himself.

Pastoral Council Discernment: Next Sunday 26th of August, we will be discerning six new members to be members of the pastoral council at 2:30 pm in Room 215. I am so glad that we already have thirteen parishioners who have been nominated for the vacant positions. Kindly pray for the discernment process next week that the new members will be strong and committed to the vision of our parish.

Serra Club NE Houston: Members of this wonderful group will be speaking after all Masses next weekend to recruit parishioners to join the club. This is an excellent group of Catholics that strive to promote vocations in our archdio-cese and beyond through their prayers and activities. They also promote vocation to holiness in their own lives and families. I ask for more participation of our parishioners in this club.

Have a blessed week!

Breaking Open the Word for Families for The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time By Ginger Herrington

Reading 1: Book of Proverbs 9:1-6 Lady Wisdom cries out: forsake foolishness that you may live us to feed upon His Word and to drink of His Spirit. He promises the Spirit’s gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Each gift helps us in our everyday lives. The gift of wisdom enables us to see ourselves as God sees us: beloved, made in His Image and Likeness. Understanding helps us to know God better, and therefore to see the difference between right choices and wrong choices. Counsel tunes us in to hear the Holy Spirit as He speaks to us in prayer and through the good advice and good example of other Catholics. Fortitude fi lls us with the courage to do the right thing. Knowledge opens us up to God’s love for us, so we can love Him. Piety inspires us to show faithful love and honor to God. Fear of the Lord clarifi es our vision of Him: greater and more wonderful than any created thing, so we should always put Him fi rst. Glorify the Lord with one another! Together let us all praise His name!

Reading 2: From the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians 5:15-20 Live wisely; try to understand the will of God. St. Paul exhorts the Ephesians to be cast off ignorance, to seek the Lord, and to live wisely. Rather than overindulging physical appetites, St. Paul suggests a different, more satisfying way of life which leads to true inner joy: prayer, sing-ing, thanking the Lord – making music to Him in the heart with gratitude and praise. Be fi lled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything.

Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus told the people: “The bread that I will give is My fl esh for the life of the world.” Jesus’ message is so disturbing and confusing for this multitude! They took Him seriously, though. They did not think He was kidding or speaking symbolically or metaphorically. They knew that Jesus meant what He said – they simply could not understand what He was saying. They argued amongst themselves, seeking understanding of this puzzling pronounce-ment: “My fl esh is true food and My blood is true drink.” As Catholics, we take His words very seriously as well, for we know that His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity are given to us in the Holy Eucharist. Remember that you receive Christ’s glorifi ed Body in Holy Communion, and as you consume the Host, He waits for you to look upon Him with love and to re-ceive the many graces He is ready to pour out upon you. Commune with Jesus when you receive Communion. Speak with the Lord who has so humbly offered Himself to you. Praise, bless, adore, glorify, and thank the Lord as you enter into Communion with Him.

Encouraging words from a saint: “Nothing, therefore, that happens to us - trouble or temptation or injury or torment or slander or anything else that could possibly happen to us – can or will disturb us. Rather, we are content and hold these things in reverence, refl ecting that they come from God and are given to us as good favors, not out of hatred but out of love.” – St. Catherine of Siena

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

FESTIVAL OF MINISTRIESCOMING SEPTEMBER 8 & 9!

Living in Gratitude!

Stewardship comes down to personal decisions about how we each live, and how we each will respond to God’s gifts based on our experience, self-knowledge and the call of God’s Grace.

Turn Cultural Values Upside Down – Stewardship is NOT the Church asking for money “AGAIN”. It is what we vowed to do when we were baptized – share all of God’s gifts to enable God’s work to be done on earth.

Life of a Christian Steward – Sharing fi nancially is a small part of the commitment. Christian Stewards receive so many gifts from God so these are nurtured and shared abun-dantly with everyone.

Choices – Christian stewards regard success and a high stan-dard of living as secondary to a life of generosity, hospitality, and personal and Godly relationships.

We Give Thanks for God’s Blessings – When responding to God’s generosity the stewardship question is not “should I do these things” but rather, “how much can I do”.

The Decisions are OURS to make!

The Festival will be held after all Masses SEPTEMBER 8& 9 in the Family Life Center.
