DESCRIPTION

......THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF FASTENER FAILURE..................THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF FASTENER FAILURE......

The working principle behindthe Disc-Lock Washer is sim-ple. It consists of two washer-shaped pieces which arepreassembled (glued pairs)which have inclined cams onone side and a series ofridges on the other. On instal-lation the two cam sides are

mated together and placed between the nut and the jointmaterial. Under vibration the nut will attempt to rotate loosebut, as the angle of the cams is greater than the pitch angleof the thread on the bolt, the interlocking cams and the non-slip ridges of the Disc-Lock Washer work together to createa jamming effect. This effect prevents loosening and furtherlocks the assembly, thereby maintaining joint integrity. Theresult is a fastening system that is vibration proof accordingto Military Standards. (United States Military MIL-STD-1312,Vibration Test 7. Test Results data available upon written re-quest.)

The Disc-Lock Washer is not only a vibration-proof lockingdevice but also a heavy duty structural locking device rec-ommended for the most stressful applications.

Once applied and installed correctly the Disc-Lock Washerwill ensure that the fastener remains secure and that nutsand bolts do not require retightening.

1 To install the Disc-Lock Washer, simply place the preassembled pairof washers between the nut and the joint material.

2 As the nut is tightened, one half of the Disc-Lock Washer isseated to joint material and the other to the nut.

3 When the bolt elongates due to vibration and shock, the nutwill attempt to rotate loose. As one half of the Disc-LockWasher tries to rotate with the nut, the interlocking camswork against each other. This will maintain the preload andlock the assembly.

4 As the bolt contracts, the inclined planes of the cams causethe nut to rotate back to its original position.

5 In common with most fastening devices, Disc-Lock Washersshould only be used against flat, relatively smooth metal sur-faces.

6 If the joint material is not metal, the Disc-Lock Washer maybe used by securing a metal plate to the joint material in sucha manner that the metal plate will not rotate.

7 A torque wrench is not required when installing Disc-LockWashers.

8 An air-gun can be used when installing and removingDisc-Lock Washers.

Disc-Lockwashers are sold in pairs. These pairs may be gluedtogether for easier installation. However, due to circumstances be-yond our control during shipping and handling, some washers maybecome separated. This does not effect the operation of the washersand these washers should not be returned as defective.

How does it work?

The Disc-Lock Locking Nut is a vibrationand shock proof, free spinning lockingnut. It consists of two components, eachwith interlocking cams, which are joinedtogether to form a one-piece assembly.

The top component of the Disc-LockLocking Nut is a threaded hexagon nut withcams on the underside and a pilot thatretains the washer. The bottom component is a hex flange washer withcams on the top and a smooth bearing surface.

When the assembly is subjectedto vibration and shock, theinterlocking cams of the Disc-Lock Locking Nut attempt torise against each other. As thecam rise angles are greater thanthe pitch angle of the threads, the assembly locks and maintains the clamp load of the boltedconnection, thereby protecting joint integrity.

DISC-LOCK Locking Nut Installation

To install the Disc-Lock Locking Nut follow the same procedure asfor conventional nuts and torque to normal specifications. To removethe Disc-Lock Locking Nut place the wrench or socket over bothhexes and loosen.

MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY BY DISC-LOCK INTERNATIONAL

• Electric motor - 120V/220V operation• Light weight compared to hydraulic wrenches• One man operation - saves installation cost

• No torque pass to the operator

The DISC-LOCK shear wrench model DL-537E is electric and light-weight compared to hydraulicwrenches. This translates into a one-man operation, saving installation cost. The unique design of theDISC-LOCK shear wrench uses an outer socket that engages the nut while the inner socket engagesthe bolt. The two sockets rotate in counter force allowing the nut to turn while the bolt remains sta-tionary. This counter force operation allows no torque to pass to the operator, reducing fatigue thatcan cause carpal tunnel syndrome which is a compensable injury and not desirable.

The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut: maintains wheels on axles is approved by vehicle and axlemanufacturers

What is the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut?The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is specifically designed to pre-vent wheel loss from commercial vehicles such as trucks, trailersand buses. Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts have proven to be farsuperior in terms of safety than standard two-piece wheel nuts. The combination of lateral, bending forces on the road-wheelsdue to cornering, and torsional forces due to braking and accel-eration which result in settling and looseness of normal boltedassemblies cause Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts to maintain theclamping force and to lock. thus keeping the wheels secure onthe axle.

The vibration and shock-proofwheel nut for trucks, trailers and buseswhich eliminates the risk of wheel loss.*

*As confirmed by MIRA Tests (see back page)

New features for 2006Disc-Lock is always working hard to find ways inwhich to improve its products. Main new features ofthis latest version of the Disc-Lock Safety WheelNut are:

Indestructible - The nut has been strength-ened considerably to overcome the problemscaused by impact wrench abuse. Though, itshould be noted, that while the Disc-LockSafety Wheel Nut can now withstand suchabuse, the same cannot be said of the stud. This could experience untold damage, in par-ticular stretching of the stud, if the wheel nut isseverely over torqued.

Better socket engagement - The height ofthe middle hexagon-flanged washer (see sec-tion 2 in diagram on left) has been increased togive better socket engagement.

New, environmentally-friendly coating -GEOMET®. The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nutis now coated with a new, environmentally-friendly, anti-corrosion protection, GEOMET®,which is chrome free, ensuring it is compliantwith European Union Directive 2002/95/EC(Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Thisnew coating has passed a 720 hours salt spraytest.

The angle of the cam (DL) is greater than the pitchangle of the thread on the stud (T).

Unlike a standard two-piece wheel nut, the Disc-LockSafety Wheel Nut is split into three sections, comprisinga nut (1), a hexagon-flanged washer (2) and a flat facedcup washer (3). These sections are joined together toform a one-piece assembly with a C-clip.

The top two sections (1 & 2) have interlocking cams. When subjected to road shock or vibration, the mostcommon causes of wheel nut loosening, the interlock-ing cams of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut attempt torise against each other.

As the angle of the cam is greater than the pitchangle of the thread on the stud, a wedging actiontakes place and the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nutlocks and will not come loose, thus maintainingthe clamp load and keeping the wheel on the axle.

Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut On Test

In December 2004 the Disc-Lock Safety WheelNut underwent a severe performance test at theMotor Industrial Research Association (MIRA)Proving Ground in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, UK.A fully-laden semi-trailer/tractor-unit combination (weight 35 ton)was fitted with Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts on the nearside andstandard two-piece wheel nuts on the offside.

Over a two-day period the vehicle was driven around a figure-of-eighttrack to apply lateral bending movements to the wheels. In addition, repeated forward and rearward emergency braking was undertakento induce torsional slipping forces to the wheels. At the completion ofeach cycle of thirty minutes a torque check was undertaken.

These checks revealed no loss of torque on any of the Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts at anystage. The same could not be said of the standard two-piece wheel nuts, a staggering 50% ofwhich had come loose by the end of the test.

Junker Vibration Test

Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nuts are test-ed on a Junker Vibration Test machinewhich is named after its German design-er Gerhard Junker. Junker’s theories arebased in part on the so-called “long-form torque equation” relating thetorque applied to a fastener to the fric-tional and elastic reactions to thattorque. The Junker Test machine worksas follows: an eccentric cam generatesa controllable amount of transverse dis-

placement on the joint under test. A load cell measures theactual transverse forces exerted on the joint. One can deter-mine the relationship between residual preload in the fastenerunder test and external vibratory forces created by the testmachine as a function of time.

When tested against a standard two-piece wheel nut on a Junker Test machinethe Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut remains secure under the most severe vibrationconditions while the standard two-piece wheel nut comes completely loose.
