C. Richard Clark is a joint Clinical Director of Brain Health Clinics in South Australia and a Professor of Psychology at Flinders University, where he is a past Head of the School. On Quantitative EEG &

Neurofeedback in the Assessment and Treatment o Psychological Disorders, Richard discussed the functional

architecture and electrophysiological under-pinnings of Neurofeedback

therapy (NFT), together with a review of assessment and treatment methods e.g. quantitative EEG as a parametric tool for assessing the regulation of brain systems function; and the role of neuropsychological assessment; and theoretical viewpoints, methods and applications of NFT. The presentation also discussed the relationship

between neuro-therapy and psycho-therapy, emphasizing their comple-mentary, respective roles in redressing neuropsychological dysregulation.

Yuri Kropotov has qualifications in the-oretical physics, philosophy and in neuro-physiology. He has worked in psychiatric clinics of the Institute of Experimental Medicine and the Institute of the Human Brain of Russian Academy of Science in St Petersburg. On QEEG, ERPs in ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment, Yuri presented 10 years of his experience applying event-related potentials (ERPs) in clinical practice of ADHD. Resting state spontaneous EEG and ERPs in different behavioural paradigms are among func-tional neuro-markers in neuroscience. Yuri outlined studies on: 1) test-retest reliability of ERP latent components; 2) ERP neuro-markers of ADHD; 3) ERP indexes of neu-ropsychological domains such as energiz-ation, monitoring, task switching; 4) pre-dicting effects and side-effects of Ritalin in ADHD population; 5)creating Neurofeed-back protocols for ADHD on the basis of ERP assessment; 6) creating tDCS

protocols for ADHD; and, 7) monitoring the effects of treatments by ERPs.

Adam Clarke is a Psychologist and lec-turer in the School of Psychology, University of Wollongong. He completed his PhD at Wollongong on the EEG of children with ADHD. A recipient of the Australian Psycho-logical Society’s Early Career Researcher Award and, also, the Presidential Award of Merit from the International Society for

Neuronal Regulation. Adam reviewed AD/HD as being one of the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood, affecting

approximately 5% of primary school

children. Outlining that almost all models of the disorder accept that the behavioural cluster (AD/HD) results from an underlying central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. Citing Clarke et al., electrophysiological based models of AD/HD which decomposed the EEG into single bands and relating anomalies in these bands to specific brain states (such as arousal) and to behaviour.

Martijn Arns graduated from

Radboud University in Nijmegen as a biological psychologist. He completed his PhD on ‘EEG Based Personalised Medicine for ADHD and Depression’ at Utrecht University. On the NIMH-funded ADHD Research: ‘The definitive trial’ into the efficacy of Neurofeedback in ADHD Martijn presented the current evidence for various Neurofeedback protocols in the treatment of ADHD and different efficacy designs were

reviewed along with the need, rationale and strategy of the NIMH funded

double-blind placebo controlled iCAN study (International Collaborative ADHD Neurofeedback) where recruit-ment of 140 children with ADHD were being processed at Ohio State

University and the University of North Carolina. Also, Martijn presented an etiological contribution of sleep

disorders in sub-groups of ADHD

patients. Here sensori-motor rhythm Neurofeedback impacts o sleep spindle circuitry resulting in increased sleep spindle.

Mark Bellgrove is a Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience and a Larkin’s Fellow in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University. On Neurobiology of ADHD, Mark presented an overview of our current knowledge regarding the neurobiology of ADHD, survey-ing the

genetic, pharmacological, brain imaging and neuropsychological literatures. He argued that despite significant advances in our under-standing of the pathophysiological mechanisms of ADHD, research studies persisted in studying ADHD as though it was a unitary construct. He noted that we must tackle the issue of clinical and underlying neu-robiological heterogeneity. He also discussed the potential research methods to gain traction on this issue.

CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

The Neurofeedback & Psychologists Interest Group concept grew out of psychology within the membership of the Applied Neuroscience Society of Australasia . It is interesting to note that our professional Group would not be in existence if it were not for the dedication and foresight of those ANSA members. They helped us launch as an independent entity and continuously support that on-going partnership by providing funding as with our

Inaugural Conference in Queensland and now offering our NFPIG members discounted prices to attend their Annual Conference in Adelaide this August, 2015.
