In this Urban Design project I dealt with large-scale street
networks, building arrangements and land
use patterns. Studies and exploration into
historical/recent Urban Design theories and
practices from around the world in relation to Landscape Architecture were required to devise a proper plan for down-town Denver, Colorado. Because of the diversity and scale (regional, city, neighborhood) of this undertaking, I am now
well positioned to apply my skills and knowledge of the natural sciences to the study of Urban
Design.

GoalThe aim for this design was to focus on urban studies and site planning to obtain a comprehensive and successful design . Students had free reign for design options, but must have maintained roots in the preceding Urban Design research and theories. There was a twist given to each project to create a challenge within the design. I had to incorporate a Target.

In my Urban Design solution I contributed to the pedestrian activities that connect to econ-mic activities. Items such as transportation and pedestrian open spaces unite the area through pedestrian navigation and activities. The unique experience I brought through design innovation was the buskering zone. Denverites are proud of their street entertaining and can feel that strong connection.

The Fort Yates project was an insight into a rich yet dying culture. The Lakota tribe values the horse as a symbol of their civilization and as a means of
healing through a type of animal therapy. In this proposal, the shape of the plan takes after the native american medicine wheel and combines the function of an equine center with community unity. Bringing a society together through
strongly rooted activities is vital in a culture as rich as the Lakota.
The Lakota culture holds that all things come from the four
directions of the medicine wheel. Many mysteries of the universe
have been explained through this wheel.
The horse is a very strong symbol within the Lakota tribe. The elder
of Fort Yates hopes to heal those of their troubled youth through
different possible horse therapies. Simply riding alone can be viewed as an alternative to other activities.

The Oakgrove Lutheran School required solutions to begin unifying their campus, since visitors often came to the campus for events. The school lies in a circular shape with individual buildings and no obvious main entrance. In the center of the complex there is a worn down grassy area with a few
trees. What I presented to the school was a very realistic solution; punctuated entrances accompanied with signage and designated pathways to guide visitors and students. Plantings helped
to keep from straying off the paved sidewalks while signage helped to orient and direct visitors.
Understanding the construction of individual
pieces which create a complete landscape
is a key part if the process. In this project, I expanded
my knowledge of brick pavers, retaining walls,
bio swales, and city infrastructures.

Freeway Park is located in the downtown business district of Seattle, Washington. It is designed and built by Halprin and Associates. The giant rooftop garden over the I-5 freeway incorporates local geological formations and local
natural elements as inspirations for form. I utilized Freeway Park as a canvas to express my thesis on utilizing the human senses to communicate and enhance meaning. Conceptualizing gate and paver designs requires a firm
understanding of how these items are constructed. Gained valuable insights on materials and systems needed to accomplish unique designs.

Lawrence Halprin and Angela D. valued incorporating the surrounding environment within many of their landscapes. An element not included at Freeway Park was the nearby Puget Sound, which is the home of a diverse population of sea life. Local artists will be invited to utilize the walkway as a gallery for all art types. The art must be related to the natural environment and include a sensory experience. The proposal of a
an art walk will help maintain an ephemeral and sensory design while connecting to local art and environment.
This pathway is an example of how the walk might be used artistically. Unique sea life from the local Puget Sound and the sense of balance has been incorporated to touch on environment and sensory experience. Users will be brought into the conscious awareness of their space by
feeling a new surface beneath them.

This coffee kiosk design innovation is fashioned to create inviting sounds when rain collides with the metal. This design produces an almost complete multi-sensory experience touching on the sense of smell and taste through coffee, sound through rain chimes, and visual stimulation through selected sensual colors and textures. With the kiosk, I learned to maintain a flexible de-sign to transcend the seasons and weather. Seattlites are very proud of their local art and coffee culture and will immediately connect with this unique combination of both.

Freeway Park is a large scale rooftop garden. It requires an engineered soil mixture just as
any rooftop garden would.
In Central Plaza at Freeway Park, there is a major disconnect from the high rise office tower that sits directly adjacent to the park. This pathway innovation links the Park Place building to Central Plaza. An sensory interaction has been planned for this pathway for the children from the first floor daycare to be integrated into the park. Children can hear, smell, and touch their space while
visitors enjoy the sound of children playing.

Hand Drawn Site Inventory and Analysis
This project’s goal was to give the architecture a sense of identity. To address easy access for the elderly clients, the main entrance was punctu-ated with pink blooming crabapple trees and a service lift was implement-
ed. To connect the Fine Arts Club to one of the city’s most loved parks, our group created outdoor activities and spaces including a large deck, outdoor
seating/social area, and a new space for gardening opportunities.

It is important to me that people understand how I perceive the world. Inspiration can be found in every moment if we open our minds to see it. By exposing the details in this world, I can capture my view of this life and share it with
others. This life is truly what you make of it. Do not get caught in the grind of life, or you will miss life in its entirety. These images are from my travels which have inspired and impacted me as an artist and designer.

April Lipatan The Beginning | ”The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” -Alan Watts
Drive | I am a freshly primed college student armed with a fresh education. I have never felt more prepared to do a job than I am now. I am in the field of landscape architecture because it is something that I genuinely care about. I do everything in my daily life to help take care of my environment; I recyle, reuse, reduce, and repair, but I have this burning apetite within me that craves to do more. I know I was meant for bigger things in life. So this is what I have to offer you: I am hardworking, trustworthy, and passionate. My passion lies within real solutions that makes an impact in my field.

Future |After all is said and done, I have found the courage to trust myself in whatever I do. Throughout my college career, I experieced a time in my life where I met unforgettable friends, discovered the world and its cultures, and most of all was prepared to do what I am most passionate about, do everything in my power to create sustainable solutions to help the world’s current climate condition. And I would do it all over again.
