Hello to Wa:K Community & Friends,

Animal Control: Last month we had several individuals who brought their pet to the Ranger Department because they could not care for the pet. Just reminders that having pets is a big responsibility, before you decide to get a pet, you should seriously think it over. You can take your pet to Pima County Animal Care at 4000 N. Silverbell Road. The phone number there is (520) 243-5900. An additional reminder, there are still dog collars and granules available to protect dogs from the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF).

Child Safety: Never leave your children in your car by themselves, why you ask? In the summertime cars get extremely hot inside, a stranger might take them, they might get out of the car and wander off, you might just forget about them, they might get curious and mess with things in the car that could be dangerous (the cigarette lighter in the car works even when the car is not on) and most important of all someone will call the police and report you. So before you even think of leaving your child in the car unattended, don’t do it.

Safety: Last month the Rangers responded to a call from a community member who reported that someone was stuck in the mud in a water hole. The caller stated that they had been there all night. If you plan on going off road please be prepared for emergenccies that may occur. Take a cellphone, flashlight, and blanket, let someone know where you are going and take water. But the most important thing is don’t drink and drive.

Environmental: The weather is getting warm so now is the time to contact the department to help you and your neighbors to clean your roadside. Look out your window and you can see all that trash that needs to be cleaned up. All you have to do is contact your neighbors and then us. We supply the bags, gloves, rakes and take away the trash. Come on take pride in your community. Finally the Ranger Department would like to send out a “BIG THANK YOU” to those individuals who came out last month to help with the roadside clean up. Thank you for caring.

PREPARE YOUR FEDERAL AND ARIZONA STATE TAX RETURNS FOR “FREE”SAVE

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The Finance Department has purchased a computer tax preparation program for use by (all District Community Members, the Tohono O’odham Police and Fire Department employees and the Districts employees) that is loaded onto computers in the Finance Department and the Education Center for your use.

Most people will not be able to prepare their taxes until the end of February because employers have until January 31 to distribute W-2 forms and until February 15 to distribute 1099 forms.

District employees in the Finance Department and the Education Center will help you get started using the program and assist you with questions if you get stuck, however the District nor any of the employees that assist you will be responsible for your tax return and you will be asked to sign a waiver of release of the District and it’s employees.

Call the Education Department at 807-8620 to reserve a time to use the computers or the Finance Department at 573-4021 or 4023.

IF YOU TAKE THE STANDARD DEDUCTION IN PREPARATION OF YOUR TAXES YOU WILL NEED TO BRING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

W-2 forms from all employers that you worked for during the year.

1099 forms for other income received, etc. Dates of birth and social security numbers for all dependents

that you wish to claim on your tax return. If you wish to itemize your deductions instead of using the standard deduction call Harold (Skip) Stuth at 573-4024 for a list of items that you will need.

Note: It is always helpful to bring your last years tax returns to

compare with this year’s! Note: If while you are using this program it says that you are

eligible for the “Earned Income Credit” or the “Child Care Credit” please continue and/or ask for assistance as these credits could mean thousands of dollars in refunds to

you!!!!!!!!

Note: It will be helpful for you to bring a “thumb drive” or disk to save your tax information on if you cannot complete the

return in one session and/or you want to preserve it

electronically.

Attention San Xavier District Enrolled Members!

The San Xavier Road Cemetery will be closing soon; there are approximately 40 plots available. If you would like to reserve a plot at the San Xavier Road Cemetery please contact Kim Encinas at 573-4007 to set up an appointment. Please bring proof of enrollment for all individuals you are applying for and see the guidelines below. The Hasan Cemetery is open and we are accepting applications for plot reservations. Plot must be reserved for a SXD community member/SXD

Enrolled Member Resolution No.s SXDC 08-08-13 and SXDC 06-09-09,. One (1) Burial Plot Reservation Request Form per individual. Requestor (individual completing the form) is limited to com-

pleting 5 forms for their family members. Each plot is 4 feet x 8 feet; 3 feet between each plot. This in-

cludes cremains. Identify (pictures or written description) the plot you wish to

reserve. Plot reservations will be completed on a first come, first serve

basis. Provide a current contact phone number. This will allow staff

to schedule a meeting with the applicant. Page 3

WA:K CEKSAN ROYALTY 2012 – 2013

Your Wa:k Ceksan Royalty this year has been really busy this year representing you all through the Nation and local Arizona Tribes. It is great to see the young girls grow and it makes us proud to see these young girls step up to do their talents when they are requested to. When they are not making appearances they are fundraising for their travels. They have impressed many people throughout their travels. One of the highlights was to see Syndell Rios, Lil Miss Wa:k Ceksan & Eliana Norris, Jr. Miss Wa:k Ceksan perform their talents at Miss Tohono O’‛Odham Nation pre-pageant and to be acknowledged by Chairman Norris of their talents and to say that our cultural will not be lost, that is a great feeling to hear this. The other second highlight was when the girls did five presentations for the Baboquavari Primary School presentations during their Indian Day, they were a Royalty panel that were asked various questions from the students and staff about their reign, staff were impressed of them able to speak in o’‛odham. They have traveled San Carlos, Ak Chin, Gila River, Chandler and throughout the Nation. So when you see them acknowledge them and give them your support through their fundraisers. They are doing a great job representing you all.

My Reign My reign as Miss Wa:k Ceksan. I have appeared and participated in many amazing events. From day one I appeared at all possible events I could and they have been fun with all the girls. I am learning so much as dialect of the languages, different types of culture and a little bit of history from the different tribes. I have seen many different tribal dances and a lot of beautiful role models that make history by taking the chance to be in pageants. As being a title holder I have gotten a lot out of this reign such as not being shy ever since I have gotten the new title of Miss Wa:k Ceksan I could be able to stand in front of a crowd and speak I may still get butterflies but I learned to get rid of them. I have traveled so much which is fun I have been to: Miss San Carlos Pageant and Parade – it was nail biting and

fun. Sells Veteran Service –it was touching and an honor. GuVo Pageant – was pretty exciting. Baobquavari Middle School Indian Day –was fun talking to all

the kids. Headstart Christmas Light Parade – was cold but fun to be in. CVC Christmas Parade – was fun and exciting. Miss Ak-Chin Pageant and Parade – exciting and pretty. Miss Tohono O’odham Pageant – was fun and exciting to see

the contestants. Tohono O’odham Rodeo And Fair – was great but hot. Tucson Rodeo Parade – great to ride with Ned Norris Jr. Ira Hayes Parade – honor to be there. Pisinemo Pagent – was entertaining to see the girl’s talents. Wa:k Pow Wow –great to be home and represent. Miss Gila River–exciting and shocking. Overall my experiences and adventures of holding the title of Miss Wa:k Ceksan have been fun with all the girls I am learning a lot more then what I thought I knew. It is a pleasure to represent San Xavier and be an ambassador for the people.

My name is Syndell Rios, I’m 5 years old. I go to school at San Xavier Head Start. My mom’s name is Ardell Manuel, my dad’s name is Lydell Rios, my grandma’s name is Alda Rios. I’m the new Lil Miss Wa:k Ceksan I like to introduce myself because it’s fun. I feel like meeting new people, I get excited. I love meeting new royalty. It’s so nice to be with the royalty because they’re happy for me to be with them. The places I sang was at the Veteran’s Day Parade in Sells, San Carlos, Ak-Chin and the Tohono O’odham Pageant. I traveled to Sacaton to eat dinner for the Ira Hayes Veterans Dinner. I’m very busy. I helped at the Christmas community dinner and I picked up trash after the Pow Wow. I travel a lot. I feel so, so great when I sing. If anybody in San Xavier District wants to meet me, I really want to meet them too! I want them to live by my house so I can remember them. Thank you.

S-keg Tas N-hajuñ! Añi Ap Cegig Kinonna Reye Encinas. I am 7 years old and go to Santa Clara Elementary. My maternal grandparents are Gerladine Encinas and the late Ernest En-cinas. My parents are Felipa Encinas and James Capone. My baby brother is Jusarius Anthony Capone. We are all from Wa:k Ceksan. I am very happy to be representing all of you as 1st Attendant to Lil Miss Wa:k Ceksan 2012-2013. During the past 5 months, I’ve enjoyed traveling with the girls and I’m learning a lot about myself and other people. I’m sorry I haven’t let you know about my appearances, but we have been very, very busy going to parades, pageants and other events that we’re invited to. We’re also busy with fundraisers. Our families have been working real hard raising money for our traveling, especially for our trip to New Mexico. At the end of April we will attend the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow and Miss Indian World Pageant. We have about 3 more fundraisers before we travel to Albuquerque, so if you get a chance to stop by to support us we would greatly appreciate it! The first big event I attended and was happy to be part of , was the Saint Kateri Celebration at the church. The most challenging event was our presentation to the Primary School students in Sells for their Indian Days. We sang our songs and answered their questions. We had to speak loud and not be shy! I think it was a little scary but fun for all of us. All the traveling gets me tired, but I do my best to represent the Wa:k O’odham wherever we go! It has been a great experience traveling to pageants and parades. The most interesting is the pageants, watching the girls doing their talents. For our fundraisers we have had food sales and Bingo. We hope we can provide some assistance to you and your family. The services provided are for all ages, they range from Children’s groups, Kindergarten through 8th grade and adult groups for both Men & Women. If you would like some support with relationships, raising children, alcohol/drug issues with self or a family member or just someone to talk to the Wellness House is here for you. What I have learned in my own continuous recovery is that my behaviors were not wrong but that’s just how I learned it. And one of the biggest “relief” for me, was that I wasn’t alone. Other people have similar issues, struggles and pain. In a weird kind of way, I thought no one knew what was going on and yet all along-- a lot of my family knew I was going through some struggles. I continue to learn from the groups about taking care of my spirit, to learn to honor my feelings and many other healthy tools. Our Beloved Mother, Pauline T. Bailey went to sleep and peacefully

entered into rest in her bedroom surrounded by her family at her home

at 9:47 pm on Ash Wednesday, February 13, 2013.

Wa:k Spirit Greetings Wa:k Community, We hope you had a wonderful Easter and the students enjoyed their spring break. On February 19th, The Community Liaisons transported the Youth Group to support the Tohono O’odham Community Col-­lege Men and Women’s Basketball Teams at Pima Community College West Campus. Congratulations to the women for com-pleting their first season and to the men for a great season. Go Jegos! February 22nd, the Community Liaisons along with Dept. of Justice Program (DOJ) transported and chaperoned students to Arizona State University. On February 26th, Community Liaison Daniel Preston III

attended the Native American Education Program meeting at Challenger Middle School. There was a request for mentors in

Sunnyside schools for Native American students who need Native men and women role models in our school s. Also there

was a discussion of the budget cuts in the District.

On March 9th, The Community Liaison Daniel Preston III along with DOJ staff Ramona Casillas, transported students to a Teen Leadership Program in Guadalupe AZ. Very informative workshops and up to date information on topics such as cyber bullying and family values, traditions and norms to name a few.

After School Program The 2nd and 3rd graders visited the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. This trip was designed to locate animals in their surroundings as well as develop their research methods. Upon completion of their trip they should be able to identify a desert animal and tell three things about it. The children have also been learning new ways to communicate. Pictionary and charades are the most popular and fun forms thus far. Parents, we are also experiencing issues with homework. Students claim to forget so they can skip to an activity. Class activities will not start until all homework is complete. So please remind your children to be considerate of others who want to finish their work. The 4th and 5th grade students explain there is no homework at times. I have advised the students that they are here to do their homework so take advantage of it. Please ask your child if they have homework or need help and have them request assistance from the Community Liaisons. We are here to help. Our direct line is 520-807-8624. 8th Grade - At San Xavier Mission School, four 8th grade stu-dents are in the middle of their online Stock Market Game. The Stock Market Game is an annual national game that is directly connected online to Wall Street and the Stock Market. This is the sixth year in a row that the students at our school are partici-pation in the game and they are learning a lot as they “spend !100,00” buying stocks. They are researching companies, pur-­chasing stock and keeping a daily watch on what is happening with their stock. The students have had a lot of questions, but as they invest and watch daily progress, they are learning and answering their own questions. It is also an opportunity for them to learn how to keep track of their funds and how to balance their bank account!

Hello Wa:k Community, As we move into the month of April, I am reminded of how “April showers brings May flowers”. With sunshine upon us, you can see how plants and flowers are growing and flourishing all around. With that being said, I am reminded that the same is very true for our students of the San Xavier Community. In order for them to grow and flourish, to become the students we hope for them to become, they need the support, love, understanding, and care. S-uam Maṣad Greetings! Wa:k O’odham! What a journey it’s been to finally get to this month! But, it reminds us of who is in charge…Creator! These past months, I have been working with our afterschool sessions with songs, reviewing the colors in O’odham and how we say the different animals in O’odham. San Xavier Mission are up to the number 81 in their spelling words. We also, did some dancing, with the dancing part it is not just about dancing, I cover the social part of asking a person to dance and how they need to take care of that person. Which they are to be commended on! I am real proud of all my students! In closing, I would like to thank the community and the performers for making our Storytelling event a success! We had an attendance of 167. A big thank you to Chairman Nuñez for coming to our rescue at the last minute, to the maintenance crew, Mike Corella, and all the other workers who lended a hand. March “Saicu Si Sap Ap Ju” SXD/DOJ project report by Ramona Casillas: 3/01 – Pottery classes at Challenger Middle School began and were held on Thursday and Friday’s through March 22. Native American students, from 6, 7, & 8th grades completed small clay vessels, one turtle and one bird. They learned the process of making the clay and creating shapes. In the process they learned patience, persistence (redo shape) and how to calm down and be creative. In the end students will give away their creations.

-APRIL is AIMS Month, see that your child gets a full breakfast before going to take the test. -Riding the school bus Parents, please remind your students to be on their best behavior when riding the school bus. Their safety and welfare is dependent on the ability of the bus driver to focus on traffic so that he or she can get them all safely to school and home every day. Also, keep in mind that many of the school buses including Sunnyside School District now have cameras on board so both the student and driver behavior is being recorded as an additional safety measure for all. Student behavior impacts everyone on the bus, encourage your child to stay seated until the bus reaches the destination.

-SXD Education Summer Programs The Education Department is currently updating the applications for summer programs. The applications will be available for email or pick-up at the SXD Education Center beginning April 15, 2013. Information on each program follows.

-Infants and Toddlers Summer Session I will begin June 10 and end on June 27, 2013. This session will include a morning class (10-11:30) for infants and an afternoon class for 3 year olds (1-3:00). Session II will run from July 8 - July 25, 2013 with the same hours. This session will include a morning class for infants and an afternoon class for 4 year olds. Applications will be available on May 20, 2013. These classes have a maximum of 12 per class, there will be an infant class in the morning and a toddler class in the afternoon.

-Kindergarten-Fifth Grade Summer Reading Program: We have room for 50 students per session. Eligible students must be entering K-5th grades in August 2013. Session I, begins June 3 and ends June 20, 2013. Second session of K-5th grades begins July 1 and ends July 18, 2013. Parents must bring their student to the SXD Education Center at 7:30 a.m. to eat breakfast. The students will then board a school bus for transport to Santa Clara Elementary for academic classes from 8-11:15, they will then return to SXD Education for lunch and afternoon classes, dismissal time is 2:00 p.m. The program runs Monday to Thursdays.

-Students who are 14-17 years of age and who wish to work in the SXD Summer Youth Employment Program need to have a grade point average of “C” or better to qualify, otherwise they will be referred for summer school. Contact the SXD Human Resources office for more information on the SYEP @ 573-4016. Applications can also be picked up at the Education Center.

-TON Head Start enrollment for 2013-14 begins April 1 come by the Head Start office located at the SXD Education Center for applications or call 520.807. 8658.

-April is the Month of the Young Child, the Head Start, Child Care and Education Programs will be celebrating with a variety of activities beginning with a Fun Walk on April 1 at 5:00 p.m. Dia De Los Ninos on April 24, 5:30 p.m. at the Education Center, and a cook-out at the end of the month. Keep an eye out for announcements. If you see Education staff walking around in pajamas, or with crazy hair, inside out clothes, or other silly outfits, know that we are celebrating the spirit of childhood, join us.

One of more Damaging infestations that can be found in your home is his insect commonly called a “termite”. This is true all over the world, but especially true in the Tucson area. In the United States, more than 600,000 homes suffer termite damages totaling over $1.5 billion annually. We see lots of damages from termites here at San Xavier and need to be aware of this. Note: Termites pose no danger to humans or pets, nor do they bite or spread disease

Termites are social insects. One colony may contain only a few hundred or as many as 7 million termites. Workers represent the majority of the colony population and are the ones you may commonly see in your yard or home. Workers are best described as “little white things” or “little white ants” and are commonly found in damp, rotting wood. Termites have a strict caste system which consists of worker termites, soldiers, winged reproductive termite, a queen termite and a king termite. The most common types of termites found in Southern Arizona are the “dry-wood” and “subterranean” termites. Both termites eat cellulose for nutrition. Cellulose is found in wood and wood products. 1. Breeding areas – termites require three things to survive: food, moisture and a warmer moderate to tropical environment. Termites thrive in warm, moist areas where wood products or bi-products found. These include lumber, cardboard, pressed wood, composites and paper. You will see accelerated activity during rainy – summer season although this is not the only time 2. Signs to look for – depending on which variety, you might see mud trails hanging from ceiling, patterns on walls, trails carved out of wood, wood that looks hollow beneath surface “skin”, etc. 3. Proper repairs – termite must be treated by a professional. There are many to choose from. Be sure you call a reputable company and get a cost estimate before contracting the job. You may also need a contractor, preferably an ROC licensed Contractor, because damaged wood, drywall, trim etc. may need to be replaced or repaired. This why it is important to hire a reputable contractor. He may have to work in your home for several days. Your cooperation will be required because they will need to be in your home and have access to the affected rooms. 4. Preventive Maintenance – Don’t plant vegetation next to the walls of your home because you will be keeping moisture there. Don’t allow wood siding or wood frame walls to be in contact w/soil. This provides an easy access for the termites to enter your house. Don’t let water stand or puddle next to your house. Make sure it runs away from your house when it rains. Don’t leave old wood – lumber – boxes etc., laying around your house for more than a few days so termites won’t breed. Keep your yard clean. Keep an exterminating company on yearly contract so they will do initial treatment and periodic inspections/treatments Note: this is not a “do-it-yourself” type of job.
