Sunday, September 15, 2013 ROYALTY FOR LIFE ADDS TO HIS CROWN By Perry Lefko, Harness Racing Update CAMPBELLVILLE, ONTARIO – The dream season for Royalty For Life continued Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack when the Hambletonian winner added yet another jewel to his splendid sophomore season winning the prestigious Canadian Trotting Classic by 2¼ lengths and tying the stakes record with a time of 1:52 2/5. Bred by Alfred Ross, who owns the colt with Raymond Campbell and Paul Fontaine, Royalty For Life has fashioned a season that has endeared him to his New England connections that include trainer George Ducharme. “It’s been very exciting, especially when you consider we’re all from New England and we’re not the usual crowd so to speak,” Fontaine told Harness Racing Update. “It’s been a wonderful experience. I’ve had some good ones, but this is a thrill of a lifetime. We knew we had a good horse, but there’s good horses and then there’s great horses. This horse has turned out to be a great horse. “You have Captaintreacherous, Bee A Magician and you have our horse and the three of them should be in the mix for Horse of the Year.” Royalty For Life gave Ducharme his first win with his first starter in the Hambo and experienced the same thing with the Canadian Trotting Classic. “It’s a dream for me,” he said. “I don’t have royally-bred horses. We don’t go to the sales to buy really expensive horses. Most of them are homebreds. To come up with one like this and enjoy this ride with these guys whom I have been with for 40 years is just a great thrill. The Canadian Trotting Classic is a big, big race. This is a dream come true. To play at this level and compete against these guys…that’s why you get into this sport.” The son of RC Royalty out of the Donerail mare Bourbon N Grits has been solid for the most part since overcoming some issues staying on stride earlier in the season. Ducharme corrected the problem and Royalty For Life went on to win the Stanley Dancer Memorial, the Hambo and the Zweig. Royalty For Life finished second by 1¼ lengths in his elimination race last week won by Your So Vain. Ducharme revealed afterward that the horse had a slight elevated white count, which he attributed to possibly being an allergy. Ducharme said Royalty For Life trained solidly leading up to the $686,000 final. Driven by Brian Sears, Royalty For Life was pushed hard to get the lead and was in front just before the opening quarter in 27 1/5. He continued up front thereafter getting the half in 56 1/5 and three quarters in 1:52 2/5. “I think the track was a little deeper last week and he maybe wasn’t 100 per cent, but he overcame it and he was really on his game tonight,” Sears said. “He's a beautiful horse and he just covers the ground so well. He lets you know when he's good and you just call on him and he's there for you." You think of the Little Brown Jugand you think of Phil Terry. Thegeneral manager and director ofmarketing for the Delaware, OHCounty Fair, he is one of the guidingforces behind one of the mostpopular events in the sport. But withthe defection of Horse of the Yearcandidate Captaintreacherous fromthis year's Jug the pre-race talk hasbeen more about who won't be atthe Jug than who will be. HRU satdown with Terry to get his thoughtsabout The Captain and this year'srace: HRU: What was your reaction

when you heard that Captaintreacherous was going to passthe race? PT: I was disappointed. I understand that owners controltheir horses and they get to decide what to do with them and

I appreciate that. We had a chance to show off the besthorse in the country to the biggest crowd in harness racingand he's not going to be there. That's disappointing. HRU: Did it makes things worse that he is actually goingto race two days after the Jug in a race at Hoosier Park? Was that a case of rubbing salt in the wounds? PT: Yes. You can say that. I just wish that they wouldchoose to show their horse off to the biggest race crowd ofthe year. That would have been good for the business. Ihave got to say that I am disappointed that they are racinghim Saturday night in Indiana. It's a shame. That said, I amstill excited about the field we have for the Jug this year. HRU: In some respects, is the Jug better able to sustain ahit like losing Captaintreacherous than some races wouldbecause the Jug is more than a race, it is an event? PT: I think that's true and that's because of our traditionand because of the show we put on here. We're an eventthat really concentrates on putting on the best display ofharness racing that you possibly can in the most enjoyableatmosphere you can have. It's something you can't do at apari-mutuel track when you're racing four or five times aweek. People live for this race. HRU: The purse of the Jug was bumped up a bit this yearbut it's still relatively modest when compared to some otherbig races. With VLTs having changed Ohio harness racingfor the better will we see a bigger purse for the Jug andwhen? PT: We've been working very closely with the OhioHarness Horsemen's Association and they understand thatthis is the showcase race of not only Ohio but of the countryand that it draws attention to Ohio. With the resurgence weare seeing in Ohio with breeding and everything else Ibelieve that if we continue to work with the OHHA and asthe additional tracks get their VLTs going and as wecontinue to grow there's a good chance we can approach a$1 million purse in just a few short years. HRU: The two complaints most heard about the Jug arethe half-mile track and the format with the heats. There'snothing you can do about the half-mile, but are there somethings that can be done to make the Jug more attractive topeople who now have some reservations about it? PT: Our annual Jug Society meeting takes placeWednesday morning and we will probably have some newson that issue after that meeting. There's not much more Ican say right now. HRU: The Captaintreacherous defection is a sign of thetimes. Top horses are racing less and less and their racesare getting more spaced out. Is this something the sportneeds to worry about? PT: Yes, I think so. But remember the only horse that ispassing this race is Captaintreacherous. There are two orthree others not in here but for one reason or another theyaren't ready right now or are not right. You definitely want tomake sure your horse is right when you come here. Onething I see happening is that with the states that have slotmachines or VLTs, with that influx of money, their sirestakes programs are becoming so good that you are seeing

horses that never leave New York, never leavePennsylvania. That's one of the reasons we're missing acouple of horses from the Jugette. They raced their finalsFriday night fort the 3-year-old fillies in Pennsylvania. At thistime of year you really don't want to bring a horse back infour days. We used to have the Grand Circuit races andthere was a good schedule. Now the money opportunitiesare so good they can pick and choose and give horses arest for a week or two and not get hurt by it. I'm glad thehorsemen can race for that money, but it becomes more ofa challenge for us.

We Love That Show, Too Really enjoy HRU and look forward to each new issue! Youguys do a helluva job! I wanted to mention someone elsedoing a helluva job too. There's a great TV show I watchevery week on Comcast. It's called PA Harness Week andit's a half-hour joyride! They show all the big races, but in away that's fun and easy to watch. The hosts, Steve &Heather, are forever bustin' each other's chops - just like meand my buddies do when we go to the track! Most horseracing shows are about as much as watching paint dry. Butnot this one - it rocks!!! Brian Wolfington

Harness Triple Crown a Joke The Triple Crown in harness racing is a total joke. TheThoroughbreds have the same three tracks scheduled torace over five weeks the same each year and it’s over. Icould not tell you exactly where and when the Triple Crownraces are each year other than the Jug. The Cane and Messenger are raced at different tracksover time and nothing is consistent. Only the Jug hascontinuity. It is on the third Thursday in September (exceptin those months with five Thursdays and then it races onSep 23rd, the fourth Thursday of the month). Add to the fact that today owners/trainers will avoid thetighter turns on the half-mile tracks and the purse levels atother three-year-old events overshadow the small purses ofthe Triple Crown races. Maybe sometime in our lives we will see some kind ofstandard set in the Harness Triple Crown for both the paceand trot to include the highest purses and the largest fields. As long as those in control of this sport keep looking back,

Once in a lifetime horse to own, I'd lean towards racing inthose big races and having some fun. That would alsoinclude before he retires to push and see how much speedwas in the tank.Raymond W. Morris

It’s the owners’ decision plain and simple. Where does itstate that they have to race him in every big race? Maybehe isn't so good on a small track, or maybe they are savinghim for elsewhere. I see no shame in not racing him in theJug.Steve Grammont
