FEELING STRETCHED?What stretch marks really are – and what you can do if you’re bothered by them

What are stretch marks? Stretch marks are fine lines on the body caused by sudden changes in growth or overstretching. These are caused by torn tissues under the skin and is a common condition in many people. Stretch marks do not cause significant medical problems but are often considered a cosmetic concern, especially in visible areas. Other names for stretch marks are striae distensae, striae atrophicans, striae rubra (which are red) and striae alba (white).

Who gets stretch marks? Stretch marks affect women more than men. They usually occur in areas of the body that are prone to progressive

and continuous stretching. Stretch marks are commonly found in:• Pregnant women (abdomen

and breast)• Adolescents undergoing growth

spurts (thighs, buttocks, breasts) • Bodybuilders (shoulders)• Obese or overweight people

Stretch marks can also occur from prolonged use of oral or topical corticosteroids and from anabolic steroids. They are also a feature of a disease called Cushing’s syndrome, where increased activity in the adrenal cortex (excessive production of the steroid hormone cortisol) is implicated in their development.

What do stretch marks look like? Stretch marks, when developing may occasionally be itchy. The area of the affected skin becomes pink, flattened and thin. Shortly after, striae rubra which consists of reddish or purplish lines develops, showing in directions perpendicular to the skin tension. These reddish or purplish lines lighten over time to become striae alba, which is flesh-coloured or whitish and is less conspicuous.

Stretch marks are usually several centimetres long and about 1–10mm wide. Some of these stretch marks that are caused by usage of corticosteroid, or resulting from Cushing’s syndrome, are often larger and wider, and may involve other regions.

What treatment is available? Stretch marks are usually thought of as only a cosmetic problem. However, they may be a cause of concern if a medical illness causes the striae (such as Cushing’s syndrome), or if the patient is on steroids. The following treatments may help:• Moisturising oils • Topical retinoid therapy • Chemical peels • Fractional Mixtopro CO2

hello angels

GIFT OF LOVE

Annie Chionh is the face of TMC’s Jubilee Joy

AT THE SG50 COUNTER on the first level of Thomson Medical Centre, Annie Chionh is busy bestowing gift packs and well wishes on new mummies and daddies.

With more than 20 years of experience in delighting customers, the sprightly guest service

executive, who is in her forties, finds joy in helping parents give their babies a head start in life.

For Annie, who joined the Thomson family in 2014 after a long stint as a customer service officer in the banking sector, her first month on the job was a memorable one.

“There was one week where many babies were delivered in a taxi or car or ambulance on the way here, and our staff were busy taking care of the mummy and baby and getting them to the labour ward,” said Annie.

As a guest service executive, Annie goes to the wards to visit patients who require special attention, advise them on procedures and set their mind at ease. For new admissions, she alerts the relevant staff to patients with abdominal pain or special medical conditions, and arranges for expedited discharge for patients who require it.

In addition to her everyday duties, Annie also gets to put her experience to good use in special projects. These include this year’s Thomson SG50 Jubilee Joy Pack giveaway and last year’s Dragon-Horse Loyalty Programme.

Recognition from colleagues and patients means a lot to Annie.

“Once I expedited the admission for a patient, and after her caesarean delivery the next day, she came looking for me to say thank you – she was in a wheelchair pushed by her elder four-year-old son.

“It’s things like this that keep me going as a Thomson Angel,” she said with a smile.

Annie presents a new mummy with the Thomson SG50 Jubilee Joy Pack (below), which includes diapers, wet wipes, latex pillow, changing mat, diaper caddy, selfie stick, vouchers and more

oral health

the treatment period usually do not take longer than traditional braces.

• Dental veneers and crowns provide a faster alternative to straightening teeth. However, this option does not straighten the whole tooth (crown and root). It only masks the portion of the crown that is visible in the mouth, making it to appear straight. The straightening effect is achieved by trimming the crooked teeth, allowing veneers or crowns with the correct shape and alignment to be placed over them. Patients can choose the shade and colour of these veneers or crowns. The treatment process takes just weeks to complete. However, depending on the severity and number of crooked teeth involved, this option can be destructive due to the amount of tooth structure removed.

Which option is for me?Every individual is unique, and the risks and benefits of each option need to be considered carefully. Thomson Specialist Dentistry offers a Pre-straightening Dental Screening, where an orthodontist will assess your condition and needs before recommending a treatment plan for you.

BRACE YOURSELFHaving straight teeth is more than just for pretty smiles

CROOKED TEETH is associated with many problems. They affect our speech, chewing and appearance, cause uneven wear of teeth, and make oral hygience a challenge. Crowded teeth are more difficult to brush, leaving gums prone to disease and teeth prone to staining and decay. So it is important to have our teeth and jaw properly aligned.

Early treatment in children helps guide the growth of the jaw and prevent malocclusion (bad bite) from developing. Today, adults are also straightening their teeth to boost their confidence. Braces are included as part of the treatment in restoring their missing teeth with dental implants and other dental prostheses.

What are the options available?• Orthodontic braces or dental

braces are still the most popular choice for straightening teeth. The treatment period is 18 to 24 months, and a retention period is required after the removal of braces to keep the teeth straight. There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment.

• Ceramic brackets, lingual brackets (behind the teeth) and invisible braces (also known as clear aligners are aesthetic and less visible options for those who do not want to be seen with traditional metal braces throughout the course of treatment. All patients who are eligible for orthodontic treatment can opt for any of these aesthetic options. Depending on the complexity of the malocclusion, most of these systems are just as effective in moving the teeth, and

1 Go bananas. A favourite ingredient for many smoothie

lovers, bananas add thickness and help to fill you up, and yet will not overpower other flavours. It’s a good idea to have some peeled slices ready in your freezer. Sunflower seeds also make a healthy boost to many smoothies.

2 Blend from light to heavy. The general rule is to add the

liquids (milk, water, juice or yoghurt) first, then the lighter ingredients (leafy vegetables) before adding heavier fruit chunks or ice.

3 Watch your sugar. Adding more fruit may seem healthy,

but overdo it and you run the risk of taking in too much sugar. Balance sugar-rich fruit with some vegetables where possible.

4 Move with the seasons. Fruit and veggies contain the most

nutrients when they’re in season, so keep your eyes peeled at the supermarket for the freshest produce for the healthiest boost.

5 Be power hungry. You’ll need a powerful motor and sharp

blades to crush ice and heavy ingredients for a smooth smoothie, so go for a blender with at least a 750-watt motor.

PATHWAYS TO BETTER HEALTH Try these six points for acupressure massage along your meridians

Acupoints can be used on a wide range of disorders, the most common being pain-related such as arthritis, back, neck, knee and shoulder pain, carpel tunnel and sciatica (pain in the back, hip and leg due to compression of a spinal nerve). Other conditions include sinusitis,

poor eyesight, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, abdominal bloating, painful menstruation, anxiety, insomnia and obesity.

Everyone can benefit from this traditional knowledge. Here’s how you can massage your way to better health anywhere, anytime.

IN TCM, A HARMONIOUS BALANCE of the complementary extremes of Yin and Yang of the life force, known as Qi, is required for good health. Qi flows throughout the body along pathways known as meridians. Located along these meridians are acupuncture points (acupoints) where the Qi rises to the surface of the body. These specific points, when stimulated, will influence the organs that they are associated with.

ZU SAN LI (足三里)

FENG CHI (风池)

Apply prolonged finger pressure directly on the acupoint. Do not massage or rub the entire area. For greater intensity, you can use your knuckles, a pen (with rounded tip) or a golf ball.

Apply slow, firm pressure on the acupoint. It is important to apply and release finger pressure gradually to promote energy flow.

If you feel pain in another part of your body while holding down an acupoint, it indicates that those areas could be related. You should press the points in these related areas as well.

Take long, slow and deep breaths and focus your thoughts on the acupoint that you are working on. Hold on for a few minutes until the soreness at the point decreases, then gradually release the pressure.

Work on 2–3 acupoints each time, each acupoint for 3–5 minutes. Apply pressure for 15–20 seconds, release for 5 seconds and continue. Treat yourself to 2 or 3 sessions of acupressure every week.

and flour, animal fats, trans and hydrogenated fats. You should also avoid innards and intestinal parts due to their high cholesterol content.

Since lactose intolerance is common as we get older, it’s a good idea to cut down on milk and diary products. However, do include calcium and vitamin D supplements to prevent osteoporosis.

ANDRO ALERTFor men, age is just a number if you take note of these simple tips

DR DEREK KOH practises atTHOMSON LIFESTYLE CENTRENovena Medical Center10 Sinaran Drive #10-14/15, Novena Square 2Singapore 307506T: 6352 6550/6559E: [email protected]

DO YOU KNOW that many men experience andropause – the male equivalent of menopause – when they hit their 40s?

As men age, there will be some deterioration in their musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and neurophysiological functions. Musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as muscle strain, disc degeneration, tendinitis and arthritis tend to increase with age, leading to persistent or recurrent back pain, shoulder pain or knee pain. Fractures due to falls tend to be more common, due to underlying osteoporosis and a poorer sense of balance.

This means the ageing male will need to address these three aspects of fitness: muscular strength, aerobic fitness and balance.

Work itAs a guy gets older, it is important to have an exercise regime that improves strength, aerobic ability and balance.

To build muscular strength, you can simply work against your body weight, or use resistance bands or weights. As with all strength training, make sure you give your body sufficient time to recover before increasing the intensity of your workout.

Exercises that address aerobic fitness include brisk walks, jogging, swimming and cycling. Most ball games are also aerobic in nature, but take note to avoid excessive stress on the joints.

To improve balance, consider yoga and tai chi, which are also great for your posture.

Eat rightGo for a diet that’s high in protein and fibre. Eat plenty of fish, poultry and lean meat with lots of vegetables, fruits, beans, grains and nuts.

Cut down on foods that promote weight gain, such as refined sugars

WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?Our immune system helps us counter invaders such as viruses and bacteria. However, in some people the immune system also reacts to harmless substances such as dust, food and fur. This is called allergy, and symptoms of allergic reaction include rashes, itch and swelling of the eyelids and lips. This could be dangerous if breathlessness and low blood pressure occur. Allergy may be present in the skin (eczema), nose (allergic rhinitis), eyes (allergic conjunctivitis) and airways (asthma).

WHAT CAUSES ALLERGY?Contrary to common perception, allergy is not caused by exposure to the offending substance (allergen). The cause of allergy is largely genetic. Children with an allergic parent have a 33% chance of developing allergies and this increases to 70% if both parents have allergies.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON ALLERGENS IN CHILDREN?Common allergens in children less than three years include house dust mites, cat fur, cow’s milk and hen’s eggs. In older children, house dust mites, cockroaches and cat fur are more common. Food allergy is generally less common in older children.

HOW IS AN ALLERGY DIAGNOSED?A detailed history of the symptoms, together with a physical examination, is often enough to diagnose if an allergy is present. Allergy testing serves to confirm the diagnosis. However, these tests have to be used in a focused manner and interpreted in the appropriate context, otherwise a person may be inaccurately diagnosed with an allergy that he or she might not have.

WHAT ARE THE TESTS AVAILABLE?Skin prick test (SPT) is widely used because it is sensitive in detecting

allergies, inexpensive and easy to perform with quick results. Patients will have to discontinue oral antihistamines (cough, runny nose, allergy medicines) at least five days prior to the test. For the SPT, a drop of a suspected allergen is scratched on the surface of the forearm or back skin. Several allergens may be tested at the same time. If there is an allergy, redness and swelling will form at the test spot in 20 to 30 minutes. The results are measured to determine the severity and this would aid the doctor in planning treatment. There are also other allergy tests in the market, but many of which do not have sufficient scientific evidence to support its use.

HOW DO I TREAT ALLERGY?Unfortunately, there is still no known cure for allergy. However, there are well-established medications to effectively control symptoms and prevent reactions when exposed to allergens. Avoidance of allergens may be useful, but may not always be possible. Certain allergies like food allergy, eczema and asthma tend to affect younger children and they would outgrow them.
