THOUGHT FOR TODAY: I/J/OW WCIn/ffrerainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

In 2008, I cautioned all ofyou to avoidSUDOKU since it is addictive and causes

you to waste productive hours trying to besuccessful. I regret to inform you that I amnowavictimofanotherpuzzle-KENKEN.It can be found on the LA Times comic page

just under SUDOKU. It's more addictive than KENKENSUDOKU, more challenging) and causes oneto waste more valuable time.

Use that valuable time saved to read £l.sfen-l.ng I.s cmJ4cf a/Love by Dave lsay. This bookwas selected for the loth annual Long BeachReads One Book occurring from March 24until April lO this year. The brochure forthis event recommends that readers enroll in OLLrs MEMOIRWRITING class.

In this issue, don't miss page 7 which features new and old photosofSyd Benowitz. In future issues ofthe SUN, we plan to extendthis practice to other OLLI members...so find your baby pictures.

Members need to beaware of the follow-ing changes coming to

OLLrs fee schedule, policies, and

procedures:PARKING: Effective spring term20l I, the fee for a parking permitwill increase to $20.00 per OLLI

Cc7r/ Cwr/ts term. This change will bring thefee we pay a bit more into parity with the fees othersmust pay for parking. When one considers the cost ofaone-day permit at one of the vending machines is $5.00,that University students pay Sl23 per semester for their

parking permits, and that metered parking on campuscosts $2.00/hour, this small $2 increase still makes thefee we pay quite modest by comparison. Also regarding

parking: volunteers and instructors who are offered theperquisite ofcomplimentary parking must have on file withourOffice Administratoran up-to-date CSULB VolunteerIdentification Form before they can be issued a parking

permit - effective immediately.SCHOLARSHIPS POLICY: The Governing Council hasrevised the OLLI scholarship policy to reflect the increasednumber ofrequests for assistance to pay membership and

class fees and the decreased monies available to help paythese fees. Beginning with the acceptance ofregistrationsfor the spring term, 20ll First Time applicants for schol-arship may be awarded full funding for membership feesthen due and full funding for up to three.lecture classes"($30.00) OR one.'computerclass" ($35.00) OR one "lectureclass" and one.'computer class" ($45.00). Persons whohave previously been awarded a scholarship shall be eli-

gible to receive assistance for a maximum ofmembershipfees then due and partial funding for class fees accordingto the following schedule:I. ''LectureClass"tuition: Maximum of3 classes at $5.00each (Sl5 total) OR2. ''Computer Class" tuition: Maximum of one class at$25.00 OR3. One (.lecture class'. and one "computer class" at $30.00.

The recipient will need to pay the balance ofthese classfees and full fees for additional classes taken. As in the

past, the criteria for awarding all scholarships shall be theavailability ofmonies in the scholarship fund and clear andconvincing evidence based on information provided in theapplication that without financial aid, the applicant will beunable to participate in OLLI. Applications are availablein the OLLI Office.

From the Executive Directorby Barbara White

We'd like to welcome the new members ofOLLIwho have joined us for the express purposeof participating in the new $25 per month

membership benefit: The CSULB new Health and FitnessCenter on campus. This Center replaced the FROGSfacility at the Pyramid earlier this year. A perquisite of

your OLLI membership is the opportunity to attend ourmany non-credit classes designed to exercise your mind,as well. Our classes are thought provoking without testsor homework!

And to ourtraditional OLLI members who havejoined usforthe express purpose oftaking our lecture and computerclasses, you too have the new "perq" ofjoining the Healthand Fitness Center gym for only $25 per month. If youhaven,I done so, why not drop by the south entrance to thePyramid and see the facility.

Several ofyou have asked aboutjoining the new Student

Wellness and Recreation Center(SWRC) oncampus. Membershipin that Center is only open tomatriculated students, faculty}staff, and alumni ofCSULB atthis point in its history. This isbecause it is the students, feesthat have built the facility andmaintain it. With over 30,000 Dr. Barbara Whitestudents eligible to use thatCenter it will likely be a long time- ifever- before OLLImembers will be invited tojoin.

We thank the University and especially Dr. Ken Millar,Dean ofour College, for offering us the new Health andFitness Centeras an additional benefit ofOLLI membership. We should have no doubt that we are an integral part ofthis University.

Meet Dean Kenneth Millar

DI. Kenneth (Ken) Millar has been the Deanofthe College of Health and Human Services(CHHS) at CSULB since June 2010. OLLI

at CSULB is one of the many programs within hispurview. A native of Montreal, Canada, Dr. Millarreceived degrees from Sir George Williams University,University of British Columbia and the University ofTexas. He has had previous academic appointments atLaurenian University in Sudbury, Ontario, the Univer-sity of Arkansas at Little Rock, Louisiana State Uni-versity} Aurora University and, most recently? FloridaGulfCoast University where he served as the Dean ofthe College of Professional Studies.

Dr. Millar is a voracious reader and devotee ofacousticfolk and world music. He also competes in triathlonsand, in a nod to his Canadian background, the cultsport ofcurling. He is married to Patricia, a retired social worker, and

is the father oftwo sons, both ofwhom live in Ontario,Canada.

SUN: What are your views on senior independent studycenters?Dr. Ken Millar: I strongly support them. OLLI atCSULB is my first encounter with this type ofschooland I am very impressed.

SUN: Why the hungerby seniors for non-credit classes?KM: At any age, we should be life-long learners. Anactive and creative mind leads to longevity and richnessin living.

SUN: What is your assessment ofOLLI?KM: OLLI is a fabulous outreach for our University. My first OLLI event was your Arts and Crafts show. Iwas struck by the talent and creativity. As long as Iam Dean, OLLI will get my unequivocal support.

SUN: Any recommendations for our curriculum?KM: No. Your curriculum is well rounded and shouldbe membership driven.

by Jack Blecher

SUN: Should we strive for increased enrollment withour limited space?KM: Yes. It is an interesting problem. If and whenneeded, the collegewill find space forOLLI. Our fitnesscenter will be a causefor your increasedmembership sincea senior has to bean OLLI memberto use the center. The fitness centeris an opportunityfor seniors to workout. An active body,in addition to anactive mind, is worthhaving.

SUN: Will today,s Dean Kenneth Millar

grads upon retirement also yearn for more education?KM: Yes. With the life span increasing? I am confidentthat there will be a continuing quest for education.

SUN: How bad are today's financial problems affectingeducation?KM: We are in difficult times. California's worldclass higher education system is now in dire need ofsupport. CSULB was once a state-funded universitythen became a state-supported university and now itis a state-located university. We have to behave like a

private school and obtain private philanthropic supportto maintain ourselves

SUN: What can OLLI do for CSULB and vice versa?KM: CHHS currently gives OLLI space, infrastructure, accounting, and tech support. The University shouldtap into the skill and expertise ofOLLI,s membership. For example, you might offer us some guest lecturers.

Short Stories by Well-knownWriters aboutAging

by Bea Almada

Just reading the title sparks immediate interest, doesn,Iit? Aren,t we all aging from birth? And, aren't all theBaby Boomers reaching that milestone? Now is the

time to read what famous writers have said about the subject. We are indeed fortunate to have a new teaching member atOLLI. Hername is Mona Panitz with whom I had the plea-sure ofmeeting and speaking the other day. Mona has hadan adventurous life. Born in Brooklyn, Mona lived in vari-ous places before she settled in Long Beach with her family.

Moncl Panit-_

Shehas an M.A.in Jewish Com-munal Serviceand a Mastersin social work. After workingfor many yearsas a director ofan agency witha senior popu-lation, Monasigned up forthe Peace Corpsand served onthe island ofSt.

Lucia in the West Indies where she taught young reformschool boys to read. That`s not all she is a retired psycho-theTaP\S\.

Mona has always been a voracious reader and is alsoa short story fiction writer. When she and her husbandtook a class at OLLI Downtown, she was inspired to teachthis class. In SHORT STORIES ABOUT AGING BYWELL-KNOWN WRITERS, students will read storiesby many famous authors such as Alice Munro, John Updike,Roy Carver, and more. The tales deal with growing olderand are about love, hate, wisdom, humor and sex. Shehopes you will find much to identify with and that lost orhidden memories and thoughts will be recalled and sharedwith the class. I'm sure we will all find the interaction thatMona prolnOteS in her Class tO be most Stimulating.

We well.ome Mona to the OLLI teaching communityand look forward to her multi-thought provoking classat OLLI Downtown. Isn't there a song by that name?DOWNTOWN.I Put that one on your OLLI sign-up sheet.

Art forYour Sake

Wby Linda Fuchik

hen did you last visit the Museum of LatinAmerican Art here in Long Beach? Recently?Never? Have you ever visited Olvera Street in

downtown Los Angelesand seen a mural whichhas been the subject ofcontroversy since DavidAlfaro Siqueiros paintedit in l932? No matterhow you answer these

questions, you'll have theopportunity for a broaderunderstanding of LatinAmerican art in the 20th century in Tracy Gorden's course,INTRODUCTION TO LATIN AMERICAN ART.

No one can learn about the art ofLatin America, in thiscase primarily Mexico' Brazil and Argentina, without alsolearning about the political, social and economic realitiesfrom which the art was created. Take, for instance, thatmural by Siqueiros: it's called.'Tropical America'' and itreflects issues ofcensorship, big oil business, labor, depor-tations ofMexicans living in California, and Communism. That's a lot ofhistory already recorded but history is stillbeing made because of a movement to preserve it. It,sbeen whitewashed and it still appears!Consider, too, the wonderful (andyes, sometimes bizarre)

form ofart called kinetic art because the art works are madeofmoving parts. Beyond that is optical art which gives theillusI'On OfmOVement. The fun-and at times downrightoutrageous-creations ofconceptual art will amaze you.

Tracy' an articulate and personable graduate art studentat CSULB, will use slides to illustrate how the visualculture shapes and reflects our world. And there will be

plenty oftime forquestions, answers and discussion. Thisis one ofthe reasons Tracy is enthusiastic about presentinga class at OLLI: she appreciates the perspectives of dif-ferent generations and encourages healthy criticism! Hereagerness to share the interests she is passionate about isthe ever-present bonus at OLLI.

What is that, you ask? Ifyou're well-versed on the sub-

ject, youlll be able to have a vibrant exchange ofopinions.Ifyou have some knowledge ofthe subject, you'll be ableto make meaningful associations. Ifyou have never beenexposed to the subject but hat.e curiosity about the worldand how it works. you're in the right p]ace!

The Beginning

O by Dolores Volpe

n April I I. 2009' a baby was born in-ofall places,Leisure World Seal Beach. The seed for this babywas planted by our own poet laureate, Otto Ross,

and it has been thriving ever since with nurturing fromDolores Volpe} Bea Roth, Anna Sigman, and in thebeginning with Virginia Skinner and Pat Glow.

The father ofthis baby OLLI in LW is our own president,Carl Curtis, with the expertise of the indispensable Dr.Barbara White who has worked her magic here in LeisureWorld with the powers that be.

Today OLLI LW has grown from just two classes in thesummer of2009 to five classes this winter 20ll. Thanksto the perseverance, foresight and determination of CarlCurtis, this OLLl satellite is healthy' successful and growing.

In the Computer LabMeet Don Patman Computer Lab lnstuctor

by Kathy Winkenwerder

Meet Don Patman) computerlab instructor. Heteachesthe Very First Computer class and also teaches the Intro-duction to Digital Camera class in Larry Hicks,s absence.

Don Patman

How long have you been a member? For about nine years now.

How did youhear aboutOLLI?I had a neigh-bor who wastaking classesand he told meto go andtake alook. I did andsigned up forthe Intermedi-ate Computerclass.

Why did you start to volunteer in the lab? When I took the Intermediate Computer class theinstructor asked me to coach, which I enjoyed, becausewe had some really nice people teaching the class. Ilike people and like helping them so it was perfect forme. Then I was asked to teach both the beginning andintermediate classes. When Larry Hicks isn't able toteach his class I fill in for him. rye also substituted forTerry Fiskin in his photography lecture class.

When did you start using a computer? We didn,t have one in the business I was in, but in thel980s I started using word processing on a Mac to writea newsletter. That started it all.

What did you do before you came to OLLI?My family had a business that bought beefcarcasses, cutthem to orderand sold the meat to hotels and restaurantsin the Los Angeles area. I started working there whenI was l3 when I wasn,I in school, and leaned to cutmeat. Later I ran company departments and went intothe management ofthe company.

What did you find challenging about teaching?Early on I started wondering how effective I was as ateacher, because I felt the students weren,t leaning asmuch as I feltthey should. So I started doing two things. The first was to make it mandatory to bring one questionto every class. That tumed out to be a great technique, because during some classes people asked questionsfor 45 minutes. The second was to volunteer to go tostudents' homes to see their computer environment andto help them get started. I couldn't help them with mosthardware problems, but I could see iftheir computerswere overloaded with viruses or iftheir printer wash, thooked up or even plugged in. I was able to help themsolve their simple problems and most importantly} showthem how to apply the class lessons. Overthe years I,vemade between 50 and 100 ofthose visits.

Whatwasyourmostmemorableclassroomexperience? In addition to helping people, it was hearing their stories. Most ofour students have had very interesting lives. Iremember one man who told stories about flying an air-plane full ofgasoline from Indiato Chinaoverthe Burmahump. There was another student who had been bom inGermany and who wasjust leaning about Google. Withthe help ofDon Preuss, a coach in the class, she was ableto see a copy ofthe daily newspaper in the town whereshe was bom and see names ofpeople she knew whenshe was a girl. She was weeping, she was so happy. Illnever forget that.

What do you do when you're not teaching in thecomputer lab?In addition to OLLI, I,ve volunteered at the Los Ange-les Mission. After I retired I developed an interest in

photography. First I took the Photoshop Elements classhere in the lab, then I started taking Photoshop classeson my own, editing and printing a lot ofmy own photos. Now I take pictures all the time, mainly candid shots ofpeople. And my wife and I like to travel. We've goneon cruises to the Mediterranean,Alaska and the PanamaCanal, and now we're looking forward to our next tripto the Croatian coast. We also enjoy spending time withour three children and I0 grandchildren.
