FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents , Carers and Friends,
We are nearly to the end of term one already. Time has flown but we have had a wonderful time settling in to our classes and learning new things. I hope that the two week break is enjoyable and the Easter bunny finds you. Safe travel for those getting away and have fun. School will resume for students on Tuesday 30th April. Staff will be attending training at Katoomba
High School on 29/4 and no one will be at BPS.
Working Bee for Winifred’s Garden After some great rain and sunshine over summer, the garden
is looking wonderful and the spaces have filled up with foliage. The weeds have also grown rapidly. On April 17th from 10am to 12pm you are invited to come along and assist us with some weeding. Jessica Nockolds, mum of Riley and the designer of the garden will be there trimming and guiding the
team. Come along and help, no experience necessary. Children welcome.
Thank you once again for your support and love of our school.
Memorial Tree Planting for Ms Jennifer Balaam Tuesday April 30th 2pm As you will be aware Jennifer died on March 13th. She taught at BPS for 14 years before retiring in 2018. Jennifer dearly loved teaching and her students, and will be greatly missed. James and Sam Masters, parents of Will (now in high
school) and Georgia have very generously sourced a mature and magnificent maple to be planted in the school grounds.
Please join us on the oval for the planting if you are able. Jennifer loved her garden and I am so grateful for the generosity of the Masters family in sourcing the tree and preparing the site. Once again we see and appreciate the beautiful people of Blackheath. Warm Regards,
Jane Davies Principal

The sun was out and the
breeze was a mere zephyr on the morning of Friday, 22nd March 2019, a perfect backdrop for our students and their families to walk, ride their bicycles and scooters to school to celebrate National
Ride2School day. Our school was a sea of bicycles of every
size and colour. Many thanks to our teachers who came out that morning to
help park the many bikes.
A thunderous applause to the P&C for organising a bike tuning workshop for our students. It was a “wheelie” fun day!

STAMPS Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it
to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the
foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL AND NOTIFYIYING
Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, they must not have vomited or had runny stools for a minimum of 24 hours (even if they feel better) as they may still be infectious. Staff have only the best interests of our students at heart when we ask this so as to avoid outbreaks in classrooms. We also have children with compromised immune systems at school for whom contracting these illnesses can have serious repercussions. It is important for these students that they participate actively in the day to day school program without
any major limitations. Towards this end another major concern is if these children were to develop measles, chickenpox, whooping cough or influenza so I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation. If your child has, or may have, measles, chicken pox or other infectious illness, I would ask that you please:
1. Do not send them to school. 2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible.
3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible. Thanking you in anticipation, Jane Davies Principal
A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the
due date on the note. Owing to our Department of Edu-
cation system we cannot process money that comes in
after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem to work as this is the bank’s system but the mon-
ey cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE com-
plete the assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than welcome to reimburse us after the date.
PAYMENTS
After a few years off, our production for Wakakirri 2019 is taking shape. Over 80 students have paid their entry fee to be part of the cast and crew. This is over 20% of all the students in our school! Casting is underway now and rehearsals will begin in Term Two. Families are encouraged to join the “Blackheath PS Wakakirri” Facebook page to stay up to date with all the Wakakirri happenings and updates. We will be looking for set builders, painters and parents who are handy with a sewing needle very soon ! Kate Blackwell
NPWS & BPS JOIN FORCES IN “SAVING OUR SPECIES” Stage Two students are excited to be part of a NPWS program to protect the critically
endangered plant Zieria covenyi which currently exists in the wild in only two places in
the Blue Mountains. Seed has been collected from these wild populations and Mount
Annan Botanic Garden has propagated seedlings which will be planted in the “Zieria
Area” in our native garden. The aim of this project is to establish insurance populations
in case the remaining wild population is lost due to an event like bushfire. Senior Project
Officer with NPWS and Blackheath PS parent, Michaela Jones will be bringing the
precious seedlings to our school next week. So keep an eye out for our precious Zieria !
On Thursday 28th March, students at Blackheath celebrated the
many cultures that make up our school community. Throughout
the preceding week, classes discussed cultural diversity and
identified many different countries with ties to Blackheath
families. Our mufti donations and orange nail painting raised
$420.70 for UNICEF which is a fabulous effort by our students.
The dedicated team in the canteen celebrated Harmony Day
with lots of orange treats for sale which were a huge hit.
Thanks to everyone who supported this annual event at our
school. Kate Blackwell Anti-Racism Contact Officer
Three of our Blackheath equestrians competed at Scots All Saints College on 24th March in Bathurst. There were many competitors from schools around Oberon, Bathurst and as far away as Sydney. Competition was very tough with classes including
riders from Year 3 up to Year 12. Isla Corscadden on Poppy and Laura Golian on Rusty competed bravely in classes of 30 riders. Annabel Dignam on Tom, placed 4th in the 65cm and 85cm classes. The girls proudly represented Blackheath Public School and
gained valuable competition experience. Well done girls !

Grandparents’ Day
Thanks to the generosity of our school community, and the support of our
local bookshops Gleebooks and Megalong Books, we have hundreds of
new books coming into our school library. All donations have been
accessioned and are being covered as quickly as we are able. Thanks to Ms
Booth, who is always covering books for us, and a kind group of
community members including Robyn (Ella’s mum), Vanessa (Alton’s
mum), Marilyn (Ruben A’s grandmother), Andrew (Robert and Lucy’s dad)
and Sarah (Ruby and Matilda’s mum) for your ongoing help in achieving
this massive task.
PRC
We have our first students who have already finished the Premier’s
Reading Challenge! Congratulations to Ruby Ross in K/1H, Gryffyn
Hoekstra in 1/2N, Elvan Hoekstra in 3/4M and Miette Hoekstra in 5/6M.
CBCA
Last Tuesday I was excited to attend a CBCA conference and spend the whole day talking about, listening to experts talk
about, looking at, and revelling in children’s books. I heard Graeme Base, Aura Parker, Jules Faber, Stephen Michael
King, Andrew Daddo, and many others talk about their work and books. As an amazing and unexpected special bonus, I
got to see Charmaine (Jude’s mum) being awarded the Kestin Indigenous Illustrator Award. Congratulations Charmaine!

KOALAs
All KOALA nominations need to be in by this Friday. Over the next few weeks, results from all around Australia will
be tallied up and the shortlists of 10 finalists in the 4 categories (Picture Book, Younger Readers, Older Readers
and Years 7-9) will be announced. Please encourage your children to nominate their favourite Australian, less than
10 years old books by seeing me. Children’s choice awards mean so much to authors and illustrators!

Does your child have a food allergy or sensitivity?
It is crucial that you inform the school if your child has, or develops, an allergy or sensitivity to a specific food. Please ask at the office for a form to update your child’s details.
What an awesome school community!
A massive thank you to the many volunteers who helped make Grandparents Day a huge success, and those who gave up their Saturday to help us run the Election Day events. These days have raised essential funds for our canteen and P&C activities. We are extremely grateful to be part of such an active and supportive
school community. A special thanks also to the bike mechanics who came and serviced all of the bikes on ride to School day!
