EEE REPORTS

You might wonder why there is a picture of a newborn beginning this article. She was born (weighed 6.5 lbs) on Tuesday March 22 at 8:30 AM to Amber and Elliott Kuelz. Emerie is our first great grandchild. We were getting suspicious this would never happen in our life time. We are truly blessed.

VA-K’s yearly fundraiser took place in March. Fortunately our event was held inside because it rained most of the day on the 19th. Along with 25 of our own there were 32 guests from VA-X (Salem), VA-V (Bedford), VA-W (Chester) and VA-H (Abington). Everyone had a great time playing games, eating chili, winning lots of prizes and of course playing 50/50. Thirteen participants brought chili and four judges with iron stomachs liked both the mild and hot chili made by Betty Black. Thank you to the participants, the judges and

congratulations to Betty. The VA-K team led by Diana Brennan did a professional job running this event. Most every member had a job to do and they did it well. Thank you for your outstanding effort. There is a well-known Honda motorcycle saying, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda”. Because of the weather there was only one Honda, but there were a lot of nice people.

Sadly, we lost two of our members in March. Arney Hudson died doing what he loved to do – riding his motorcycle. Many of us went on trips with Arney. It didn’t matter if you were riding with him or sitting across the table from him during a riding break, Arney was a wonderful companion and we will greatly miss him. Our condolences to Jean and all the Hudson family. Col. Frank Leslie Luschen, Linda Kay’s father, passed away. He was a VA-K member and regularly attended our events and monthly gatherings. He had an outstanding US Air Force career and will be buried with full honors in Arlington Cemetery. Our condolences to Linda Kay, Gary and all their family.

On March 26th 25 of us and one guest Susan Millers grandson, Patrick Harmon, a good looking Marine, attended an Italian gourmet dinner at Luigi's on Brambleton. The food at Luigi’s is great. It was great to see Jack and Linda Dillard enjoying the evening and that Jack is getting back to normal. Thanks to Bobbie Jo for coordinating this event. No motorcycles, but never-the-less an enjoyable evening.

There were six rides (Wednesday + Saturday) planned for March. Attendance was meager. Hopefully springtime will get folks excited about riding. The next ride is a mystery ride by Darrell on the 6th of April followed by Emil’s ride to the King Family Vineyards on the 9th of April.

VA-K had a wonderfully busy day on the Saturday the 2nd. Barry and an experienced crew T-Clocked a bunch of bikes (I did not count them) while the VA-K ladies attended a Co-rider Seminar. For lunch we had hot dogs and other wonderful dishes brought by the attendees. After lunch everyone attended a Motorcycle Awareness class put on by GWRRA certified trainers Dave and Norma Miller. To finish out the day VA-K visited VA-X (Salem) for a spaghetti dinner with all the fix-ins. Along with dinner there were games to play and prizes galore. 28 VA-K members attended one or more of the events, T-Clock, MA class, Co-rider class, or VA-X’s dinner. Thanks again to Bobbie Jo for coordinating this day.

April is full of Wednesday and Saturday rides along with ice cream rides starting on the 19th of April. There are also events including the Motorcycle Awareness bike show held in conjunction with the Vinton Auto Show in the former Vinton Motors parking lot on April 23rd. On the 30th attend the ride and ham dinner sponsored by Bobbie Jo and Durwood. Not that far off is the Kentucky Derby race on May 7th at Bobbie Jo and Durwood’s house. This a dress up like you are attending the real Kentucky Derby being held on the same day.

We will see you at the Gathering on 11th of April.

EDUCATION CORNER

When people drive distracted from all kinds of things. They may be on prescription medication prescribed by their doctor. The label said; “do not operate any kind of machinery.” A lot of medicine will make you numb and dumb. What if you were operating a motorcycle? It would be the same as being impaired. Riding on two wheels is hard enough. You need all things to work well. This is where education, practice, and repetition will come into play. What you have stored in your brain will come to your attention, then you can act on it when you need to. You don’t ride when you are tired, have a lot on your mind, or when “I just had a couple of drinks.” Some may ride to clear their head. Depends on what is on your mind. One good thing on your mind/head would be a good helmet. Protect what you do have left. What about body parts? They are hard to get if you lose one. Good protective gear that will help when you have a mishap. Always use hand and turn signals, in turning and lane changes. What you do and wear may get recognized and get you some lead time. How far down the road can you see with good eye sight? Use your knowledge to scan the roadway. What are you looking for? Share the road, share motorcycle awareness with anyone you meet or know. If they know you are out there, maybe they will be on the look-out. “Do unto others as you want them to do to you.” Think ahead.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE

LIGHTNING: Most underrated weather hazard and a potential killer. No one knows where it will strike. Lightning is most often seen in thunderstorms. Lightning makes thunderstorms. It can strike outside the storm itself and knows no boundaries. There is no guarantee for absolute protection from lightning. Anything that has exposed openings, vehicles, buildings, trees, motorcycles, are in danger. Lightning can strike as far as ten miles from where there is a storm. Remember this lightning rule: “When thunder roars go indoors.” If you are caught out on the highway, find an overpass and get as high as possible from the road and out of the water. Don’t touch any metal of the bridge. Metal and water are good conductors of an electric charge. Lightning is the worst, can carry about 30,000 amps of charge and has 100 million volts of electric potential. If a body gets struck, there won’t be much left. Check your weather forecast and watch the sky. Don’t forget to watch the road. A storm that has passed can leave a lot of debris on the roadway. 146432

ONE FOR THE ROAD

Sometimes you just wonder if it is worth it. Sometimes the task is long and hard, the payoff seems far off in the distance, and it strikes you that it might be better to just quit. Regardless of the toil, struggle, frustration, and downright unfairness of what you may be facing, stay the course. Stay faithful! When He returns, you will receive the reward promised and it will be worth it.

North Carolina Launches

“Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine”

March 24, 2016

Attention all riders who may be traveling to or through North Carolina in the next few weeks.

Police are currently issuing citations for even minor speeding violations. Members of this list

have reported observing numerous motor vehicles pulled over along North Carolina roads. The

effort is being called “Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine.” Any speeding violation may result in a

traffic citation. The following was taken from a press release issued by the North Carolina

Department of Transportation:

Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine Enforcement Blitz Launched

Last year, speeding was a contributing factor in 23 percent of all fatal crashes in North Carolina,

and 322 people died as a result of these crashes. To reduce these fatalities, the Governor’s

Highway Safety Program, along with state and local law enforcement agencies, launched a speed

enforcement campaign on March 24, called Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine to remind motorists

that the posted speed limit is the law. The enforcement blitz runs through April 3.

If you find yourself traveling to or through North Carolina in the next few weeks it would be

advisable to strictly adhere to the posted speed limit.

Having been a very proud military wife, I would like to make mention of our special guest at Luigi’s.

We were honored to have PFC Patrick Harmon join us for dinner at Luigi’s. Patrick is the grandson of Susan & Dave Miller. PFC Harmon is currently stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, but will be deployed to Jordan for a month the end of May and will go back again in February 2017. We would like to thank PFC Harmon for his service to our country. Please keep Patrick and his fellow Marines in your prayers.
