Science with Mr. Graybeal [email protected] x504

I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Three weeks from today, progress reports go home for the final quarter. Where has the time gone? Field trip information goes home today for the upcoming field trips: 8th grade – Museum of Nature and Science(April 29th-Wednesday); 6th grade –Zoo (May 5th –Tuesday); 7th grade – Garden of the Gods and Cave of the Wind (May 6th –Wednesday). We will need drivers and chaperones for all the trips. Let us know if you are able to drive as soon as possible so we won’t have to cancel any of them. Students can retest any day after school except Tuesday because of meetings. Don’t wait until the last minute to try to pull out your grade. Studying really helps to do better on the tests and quizzes so you don’t have to retake them. Get any missing work in too. There is really no reason not to pass except you decided not to. The following is a brief schedule of what is happening in science this week.

Science:

Decide now to do the best you can. You are running out of time for the year. You make choices daily how you do. Decide now to do the best you can every day and the rest of the year.

NJHS Selection Information

It's the time of year when the CPA Chapter of National Junior Honor Society seeks out new members. NJHS is a national academic honors organization that teaches middle- and high school-aged students how to become better citizens by following its foundations: character, scholar-ship, citizenship, service and leadership. As students start to build these character traits, they will be more successful and help those around them to do the same. This year, NJHS promoted scholarship and academic achievement through Pi Day celebrations.

Our NJHS by-laws require that we inform every students and parent of the selection process. The first step in the selection process is based purely on academic achievement. Sixth and seventh grade students are eligible for the spring induction ceremony. Students must have a cu-mulative grade point average of 90% and must be approved by the Faculty Council in order to be accepted as a member of the NJHS. A stu-dent’s grade point average (GPA) will be determined for National Junior Honor Society by averaging grades from first semester of this year. A total of five grades will be averaged to find a student’s cumulative GPA. All academic classes (Science, Literature/Writing, Social Studies, Math) will be included in the average. In addition, a student’s grades in specials classes will be averaged and counted as one grade. Finally, each potential member will have the opportunity to fill out a selection survey to then be evaluated by a Faculty Council to assure they meet the high standards of leadership, scholarship, service, citizenship, and character.

If your student has met the initial academic expectations (Grade Average of 90% for first semester), they will receive an individual letter in their Monday folders TODAY, April 6th, inviting them to continue in the selection process. This letter is an opportunity, not a guarantee. I look for-ward to another great year of NJHS. Please direct any questions my way.

Social Studies with Mrs. Hughes [email protected] x514

All Classes

It is really important right now for all students to have access to the internet nightly. They may not use it every night but the nights they need it they will only have one night to complete the homework.

6th Grade

This week we will focus on the art of banking: setting goals, where money comes from, where it goes, and budgeting. There is a quiz over the decision making unit on Tuesday and a quiz over the making money unit on Thursday.

7th Grade

This week we will wrap up our look at buying a home. Our next unit is going to be on the different kinds of banking services avail-able. The quiz for buying a home will be on Thursday or Friday this week.

8th Grade

This week we will focus on credit cards: what they are, how they work, and being wise with them. There is a quiz over the last

unit on credit on Tuesday.

All Classes:

Because of the nature of this class being a Social Studies class, it is expected that students will have homework throughout

the year that will require them to have internet and encyclopedic resources available to them on a short notice basis. This means they may need to use the local public library, resources from home, and if necessary using a friend with these things available. I will try to give you as much warning as possible.

All students need to have their own atlases in class beginning September 2nd.

I do not return tests and quizzes in the Monday folders to parents. Instead, students will receive them and keep them in their

binders so that they are able to study for them for their final exams since almost all of the content on final exams comes straight from their tests.

Continuation Info

Please begin thinking about which baby picture and current picture you would like to submit for the Continuation program.

We also will need any group shots from K-8th you have this class.

Our next meeting will be on April 14th at 4:00 pm..

Weighted Grades

I do weight my grades for academic classes as follows: Tests/Projects = 40%

Quizzes/Homework/Classwork = 35%

Notes/Participation/ = 25%

This does make it so that you can’t add up their total number of points and divide it by the total points possible and calculate a correct grade. Please email me if you have any questions
