She came to our district two days before our Multi-District President Elect Training (MD PETS) in Syracuse to be with us Rotarians. She had an early flight into Albany International Airport and then right to a meeting in Albany with a group of young Rotarians (under 40) and spoke with them about how they can work in rotary and give us a fresh look at a way ahead for the current times. They asked her some hard questions and received some direct answers. Later I saw some emails from these new and young Rotarians saying how much they enjoyed being with the director and how they should keep in contact with one another. There were a number of clubs represented, and if one of these young Rotarians comes up to you and says let’s try - this - please give them a listen. They may have a good idea for the club. The RID then had lunch with about 50 of our Rotarians from around the district in Schenectady and answered some good questions, especially dealing with attendance and club meetings. If you weren’t there, find out from someone about her answers. I think you will like them. Later that afternoon she spoke to faculty and students at SUNY Cobleskill, who are thinking about forming a Rotaract Club. Then off she went to Binghamton for dinner with Rotarians at District 7170 and gets to know another fifty or sixty Rotarians. The next day she was off to Rochester for lunch, with District 7120 and back to Syracuse for dinner with District 7150. These are the four districts that join together for the MD PETS once a year to help train their presidents and give some commonality in leadership to our upstate Rotary clubs. So before she was the guest speaker Friday evening at the MD PETS in Syracuse, she had an opportunity to see a good part of Upstate New York, visit with Rotarians and hear about what we are doing and what many of your Club Presidents will be trying to accomplish in each one of their clubs. She also had several Rotary international staff there to speak and help train your incoming president. Being the taxi drive on part of her visit, I listened to her and my wife talk as we went to one place and then another. Jennifer had some interesting stories, considering she has spoken in more than 100 Rotary events around the world and of course I couldn’t resist telling some of mine. (Probably way too many and it is presumptuous of me to say interesting.) In fact, my stories were so interesting that Jennifer took a “power nap” on our way to Binghamton. She got up at 4 am to catch her flight to Albany, so I am sure it was her rigorous schedule and not my interesting stories that put her to sleep? Anyway, just ask someone who has heard Jennifer speak and you will know that she has a way about her that will inspire you. If you missed her and would like to hear her speak, she will be in our area again in May for the District Conference in Lake Placid, 13 -15 May 2016. (See her picture in The Rotarian, April issue, page 32) All of this activity is centered around training of your incoming presidents and is being performed for one reason – so that we Rotarians will be able to give more effectively of our time and efforts and that your club presidents can lead us in that pursuit. Is it worth it? I don’t know, but we have almost eradicated polio in the world! March is Water and Sanitation month. Albany Rotary presents Rotary of Albany

Youth Recognition Awards Day Wednesday, May 18

12 noon at the American Legion

4 Everett Road, Albany 12205

This event was originated by the club 32 years ago, and honors youth from a foster-care population who reside in not-for-profit agencies. The six youngsters to be honored rarely receive community recognition for their struggles and progress in overcoming odds that most of us cannot imagine. All Rotarians in our region are most cordially invited to the ceremony and luncheon. Members of our club observe every year that they leave this annual event feeling better than when they arrived, and humbled by the stories of the each youngster’s courage.

David Soares, District Attorney of Albany County, will be the guest speaker. Greg Floyd, anchor of Channel 6 News, will act as Master of Ceremonies The agencies from which the honorees have been selected are LaSalle School, St. Catherine’s Center, St. Anne Institute, Community Maternity Services, Parson’s Family and Child Center, and Equinox. Long-time Albany Rotarian Brian Barr founded and still chairs this unique event which has flourished under his inspiring leadership. Capital Region Rotary to Hold Business and Service Expo in Albany

The Capital Region Rotary Club (CRRC) will hold their 3rd annual “Rotary’s Business and Service Expo” at the Radisson Hotel in Albany. This centrally located event promotes the opportunity to network with fellow Rotarians while also making an effort to invite non-Rotarian businesses so they can participate with us and enjoy this spectacular occasion. Marisa Multari, CRRC Secretary and Expo Committee Chair said, “I'm excited for the Expo. We are thrilled to welcome all community professionals this year. It is great way to network and see the many great businesses and services the Capital Region Area has to offer. I can't wait to meet everyone!”

Chartered in 2013, the Capital Region Rotary Club is a group of young professionals who are committed to service above self. Cleft Craniofacial Help Available In our vast Rotary 7190 District, too many children are born each year with Cleft Craniofacial anomalies. Sharing the linked information below with effected families, doctors and medical facilities could provide families and communities a life changing service. Last Rotary Year, nine District 7190 Clubs, our District (DDFs), District 2820 (Japan), District 9210 (62 clubs in Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique andZimbabwe), Dhaka Bangladesh Rotary, many local Rotarians and non-Rotarian businesses / organizations contributed funds to help start a Cleft Craniofacial Center (CCC) at Albany Medical Center (AMC). Its purpose: to provide a unique regional service to families in AMC’s 25 county catchment area (15.5 million people), most within District 7190 boundaries and clubs. In finalizing our Global Grant with AMC, an MOU and Joint Agreement were codified which mandated AMC establish a budget for the grant funds, and budget execution reporting requirements. The agreements also stipulated that at six months into implementation, the CCC would forward copies of booklets and papers they use to educate families, to be distributed to our international partners, who could likely, greatly benefit from the information. That has been accomplished. Clearly, this information could also benefit some families and communities within our District. The first link below contains all the booklets and fact sheets made available to families that contact AMC, and the CCC. They cover all aspect of Cleft Craniofacial syndromes and anomalies, from prenatal to adult. Please check out the entire website and share it anyone or any agency you think could benefit from having the information. http://www.cleftline.org/parents-individuals/publications/. The next link is the one for the CCC. Most interesting are the “Conditions Treated” and the “Experts.” http://www.amc.edu/patient/services/childrens_hospital/pediatric_cleft_craniofacial/index.cfm One of Rotary’s greatest capabilities and means of leverage is our ability to help others through the use of our vast communications network. Sharing this information with those that might need it exemplifies

such a case. Thank you. ~ ~ ~

Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club Named

Shelter Box Heroes

Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club president Terry Brewer is flanked by Nancy and Jack Faddegon who presented the club with the first-ever District 7190 ShelterBox "Hero" pennant. The award goes to clubs donating at least $3,000 in one year to the ShelterBox effort, which the Faddegons coordinate in our district. Southern Rensselaer, which received a similar award from the national ShelterBox coordinators for its $10,000 contribution in 2015, just gave ShelterBox another $5,000.
