H.M.S. PINAFORE First Performed on 25 May 1878 at the Opera Comique Theatre, London.
The Scene is the Quarterdeck of H.M.S. Pinafore, anchored off Portsmouth.
ACT ONE - At Noon Some time before Act I opens, Ralph has fallen in love with
Josephine, the daughter of his commanding officer, Captain Corcoran. Likewise, Little Buttercup, a buxom peddler-woman, has fallen in love with the Captain himself. Class pride, however, stands in the way of the natural inclinations of both the Corcorans to reciprocate Ralph's and Buttercup's affections. The Captain has, in fact, been arranging a marriage between his daughter and Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty, who is of the social class above even the Corcorans.
When Act I opens, the sailors are merrily preparing the ship for Sir Joseph's inspection. The generally happy atmosphere on deck is marred only by Little Buttercup's hints of a dark secret she is hiding, by the misanthropic grumbling of Dick Deadeye, and by the love-lorn plaints of Ralph and Josephine. Sir Joseph appears, attended by a train of ladies (his relatives, who always follow him wherever he goes). He explains how he became Lord of the Admiralty and examines the crew, patronizingly encouraging them to feel that they are everyone's equal, except his. Like the Captain, he is very punctilious, demanding polite diction among the sailors at all times.
Josephine finds him insufferable; and, when Ralph again pleads his suit and finally threatens suicide, she agrees to elope. The act ends with the general rejoicing of the sailors at Ralph's success;
•only Dick Deadeye croaks his warning that their hopes will be frustrated .
INTERMISSION (20 minutes)
ACT TWO - At Night Captain Corcoran despairs at the demoralization of his crew and
the coldness of his daughter towards Sir Joseph. Little Buttercup tries to comfort him, and prophesies a change in store. But Sir Joseph soon appears and tells the Captain that Josephine has thoroughly discouraged him in his suit; he wishes to call the match off. The Captain suggests that perhaps his daughter feels herself inferior in social rank to Sir Joseph, and urges him to assure her that inequality of social rank should not be considered a barrier to marriage. This Sir Joseph does, not realising that his words are as applicable to Josephine in relation to Ralph as they are to himself in relation to Josephine. He thinks that she accepts him, whereas actually she is reaffirming her acceptance of Ralph; and they all join in a happy song.
Meanwhile Dick Deadeye has made his way to the Captain, and informs him of the planned elopement of his daughter with Ralph. The Captain thereupon intercepts the elopers; and, when he learns that Josephine was actually running away to marry Ralph, he is so incensed that he cries, "Damme!" Unfortunately, Sir Joseph and his relatives hear him and are horrified at his swearing; Sir Joseph sends him to his cabin in disgrace. But when Sir Joseph also learns from Ralph that Josephine was eloping, he angrily orders Ralph put in irons.
Little Buttercup now comes out with her secret, which solves the whole difficulty: she confesses that many years ago she had charge of nursing and bringing up Ralph and the Captain when they were babies. lnadvertantly, she got them mixed up; so the one who now was Ralph really should be the Captain , and the one now the Captain should be Ralph. This error is immediately rectified . The sudden reversal in the social status of Ralph and the Corcorans removes Sir Joseph as a suitor for Josephine's hand and permits her to marry Ralph, and her father to marry Buttercup. Sir Joseph resigns himself to marrying his cousin, Hebe.

D.F. COOK, Musical Director
D.F. Cook was introduced to the stage at the age of eleven when he appeared as Tiny Tim's sister in Dicken's A CHRISTMAS CAROL. His debut passed without notice, as did his second appearance some years later as a rather light Heavy Dragoon in a 1957 production of G & S's PATIENCE. Thereafter he descended into the pit where he has remained ever since. His doctoral research into theatre music in eighteenth-century England led to the revival of two period masques staged under his supervision in Nottingham in 1981 and 1982. He was in the pit last year to conduct THE MIKADO, and he is there again tonight. Dr. Cook joined the faculty at Memorial University in 1968 and took an active part in the establishment of the music department in 1975. He became the first head of that department and continues to serve as Director of the School of Music.
12
MARTIN JOHNSON, Director
Martin Johnson's association with the stage goes back to 1967 when, at the age of sixteen, he was chosen as set and costume designer for three productions by Vancouver Opera. Since then he has achieved an enviable reputation as a designer for stage productions in many Canadian centres including, The Canadian Opera, The Banff Centre, The Guelph Spring Festival, The University of Toronto Opera, The Toronto Free Theatre, as well as the Portland (Oregon) Opera. In 1982 he moved to St. John 's to take the position of set designer with CBC Television. In addition to his work on numerous CBC/TV special productions, he continues his association with live theatre , most recently as set and costume designer for Vancouver Opera's 1985 production of Mozart's COSI FAN TUTTE. Mr. Johnson has collaborated with many of Canada's leading stage directors, and since coming to St. John 's he has drawn on this experience to serve as director for the MUN School of Music's annual production of opera excerpts. His knowledge of music, his appreciation of stage design, his keen sense of theatre, and a natural ability to work with student performers have all combined to present a vibrant production of H.M.S. PINAFORE in the tradition of excellence he established last year in THE MIKADO.

MICHAEL DONNAN
SUSAN CUMMINGS
Susan began her vocal studies with Eileen Stanbury and was for several years a member of the Cantabury Singers. Her first theatrical appearance was as Polly in the 1981 production of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA. She subsequently sang the lead in Pam Morgan's A NEWFOUNDLAND OPERA, and also appeared in Rising Tide's production of BLOOD RELATIONS. She is currently a voice pupil of Carolyn Hart. Tonight Susan has the dubious honor of being "the roundest, and the reddest beauty in all Spithead".
Michael Donnan grew up in England's Lake District where, for many years, he sang in concerts, musical shows and pantomime. He has lived in St. John's since 1971 and is a keen participant in Newfoundland's musical life. He has appeared as soloist with the Memorial Unviersity Festival Choir in Handel's MESSIAH and Bach's CHRISTMAS ORATORIO, and with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra in Great Moments in Operetta, Menotti's AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, and their 1987 performance of MESSIAH. St. John's theatre audiences will remember him as Curly in OKLAHOMA and, more recently, as an intimidating Mikado of Japan. Tonight he portrays a much less exalted character, the scurrilous deck-hand Dick Deadeye.

HUGH DONNAN
Twelve-year-old Hugh Donnan enjoys a variety of musical interests. A promising piano student, he also sings with the Brinton Memorial School Choir and the Newfoundland Cathedral Junior Choir. Although this is Hugh's stage debut, he has appeared as soloist at the National Kodaly Conference held at the MUN Music School in October 1986, and also on CBC/TV 1987 production of SKIPPER'S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.
STEPHEN HANDRIGAN
Stephen Handrigan graduated from Memorial's School of Music in 1983 and is presently director of bands at St. Pius X Junior High School in St. John's. Though his principal instrument is clarinet, he is equally at home in the vocal area having performed regularly with the MUN Chamber Choir, and studied voice with Brian Roberts in St. John's and Thee Lindenbaum, one of West Germany's leading vocal teachers. In 1983 he sang the role of Sid in THE PYJAMA GAME and also appeared in several summer festival productions at the Arts and Culture Centre. Having sung the role of Pooh-Bah (Lord High Everything Else) in last year's MIKADO, he has been permitted to remain a person of rank tonight as Captain of the H.M.S. Pinafo(e ... but not for long, as you will see.

DOUGLAS MACKEY
DOUGLAS JAMIESON
Douglas Jamieson is well known to the stage of the Arts and Culture Centre having appeared in a number of plays and musical productions over the past ten years. In 1981 he sang the lead in FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and more recently he has directed the music for the Centre's Summer Festival " Cabaret Theatre". This spring Douglas will graduate in voice from Memorial 's School of Music - not, we hope, to become the " wandering minstrel" he was last year as Nanki-Poo in THE MIKADO.
Last September when Douglas entered Memorial 's School of Music as a clarinet major, he brought with him a keen interest in musical theatre. Already he had appeared in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and had sung principal roles in the Holy Heart/Brother Rice High Schools' productions of CATS and A CHORUS LINE. Tonight he is a boatswain 's mate under his nominal Captain and former voice teacher Stephen Handrigan.
We in Council are always eager and ready to encourage activities which contribute to the cultural life of our City. It, therefore, gives me much pleasure to offer sincere congratulations to all those taking part in this year's production of the H.M.S. PINAFORE. I am sure your efforts. will be well received by large, appreciative audiences.
1988 is a very significant year in the colorful history of our capital City. On May 9, we will in a fitting manner mark the official opening of The Great '88 Soiree. It was on May 9, 1988, that St. John 's, by an Act of the Legislature, was given power to manage its own affairs; and thus began its long mission of service. We indeed have reason to celebrate;,for from humble beginnings, we have reached an enviable degree of maturity and sophistication.
May I avail of this opportunity to invite all who read this programme booklet to get involved; and to enter into the spirit of good will which will emanate from the varied activities which we have planned for the months that lie ahead.
Enjoy the show; enjoy our Great '88 Soiree.
~~~ John J. Murphy, C.M.
AGNES McCARTHY
GEOFFREY MARTIN
Geoffrey received his early vocal training as a chorister at the Newfoundland Cathedral in St. John's, and represented the choir at summer camps in Montreal and Princeton (New Jersey). Although he is a second-year organ major at Memorial's School of Music, he has continued his interest in singing, serving as an active member of both the University Festival Choir and the Chamber Choir. His performance last spring as Pish-Tush in THE MIKADO marked his debut as a principal in a full-scale musical production.
Agnes McCarthy, one of the "three little maids from school" in last year's production of THE MIKADO, graduates this spring from Memorial's School of Music. Over the past five years she sung numerous roles in the School's opera workshop programme; her most recent roles were Laurie in Copland's THE TENDER LAND, and the title role in excerpts from Monteverdi's ORFEO. Her enthusiasm for opera and stage musicals has earned her a place in summer productions in Ontario, Alberta, and Prince Edward Island.
CAROL VN REID
After a brief career as a graduate in social work, Carolyn Reid returned to Memorial University in 1985 to begin degree studies in her first love, Music. Since that time she has sung in numerous productions of the School of Music's Opera Workshop, including the role of Catherine in Offenbach's THE LANTERN MARRIAGE and, most recently, of Ma Moss in Copland's THE TENDER LAND. A member of the chorus in last year's THE MIKADO, she steps forward to the footlights tonight in the solo role of Cousin Hebe.
JOHN RUSSELL
A native of Stephenville, John is in his graduating year at Memorial's School of Music. He has been a member and occasional soloist with both the University Festival Choir and the Chamber Choir. He was a founding member of Canada's National Youth Choir in Vancouver in 1985 and has been selected to sing with the Choir again in 1988. His stage appearances include Offenbach's THE LANTERN MARRIAGE, and Menotti's THE TELEPHONE. John portrayed a colourful Lord High Executioner in last year's production of THE MIKADO .
KJELLRUN K. HESTEKIN, Stage Manager
This Norwegian-American admits with refreshing honesty that her theatrical career in front of the footlights was short-lived, and consisted of cameo appearances in high school productions of THE WIZARD OF OZ and THE MUSIC MAN. Last year she launched a new career and is now an experienced stage manager, having survived THE MIKADO (and vice versa). In real life, Professor Hestekin of the MUN School of Music directs the University concert band and teaches music theory, horn, and instrumental conducting.
JOHN COOMBS, Technical Director
John has been on the staff of the Arts and Culture Centre for 16 years. During that time he has designed sets for FINNIGAN'S RAINBOW, THE PAJAMA GAME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, A GIFT TO LAST, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, and last year's production of the MIKADO. John has also designed sets for all the concourse productions of the 1880 series. As Technical Director, John has been working with the Lighting and Costume Designers, Director and Stage Manager in order to help coordinate all facets of this production.
