! ERHS Open JAM Night! ! ! For the last few years Eastern Randolph

has been holding a bluegrass festival for its PTSO fundraiser. I as a younger teacher ,Jason Overman, carpentry teacher at Eastern Randolph High School and mu-sic player know that most of the students are not interested in that style of music. I have put together several local bands to play at the high school on Thursday, May 8th as a fundraiser. It will be a open mic night. Since local music is really growing item, here is a great event for us all to check out. You can Jason by phone at 336-736-9251 to give all the details. If you would like a spot that night for open mic give them a call. Also make a point to go out and check the great tunes. $5 per per-son and concessions are available.

WHEN: We are going to be holding this event from 7 until 10 on the evening of May 8th. WHERE: Eastern Randolph Gym WHY: Ms Bridges, our principle, sent out a calling for any ideas for a fund raiser for ER's general fund. This fund helps with cost for this such as graduation, school events, ect. WHO: Our student body definitely seems interested in the idea of real bands coming to the school. I have had a few stu-dents who actually want to join in the open jam. If you are wondering, an open jam is a event where you sign up on the spot with the performing bands to sing or play an instrument. Of course it takes a really versatile band to be able to do this. We have "The Almost Famous Band" to take car of these chores. They are an amazing local band from Asheboro. To help us out I have also arranged for some other bands such as: -"The Chip Perry Band" from Siler City (Which the students absolutely love) -Robert Smith of "Bobby and The Good Times" from Winston Salem -"Trick Switch" which features and SERMS student as a singer and lead guitarist paired with his father from Ramseur -"Cory Luetjen and the traveling Blues Band" from Asheboro We have some possibles as well such as Freddy Atkins and Cory Hunt who said they may stop by to do a couple numbers. I am wanting to invite the commu-nity to join our event. Our bands will be playing everything from country to classic rock all the way down to the blues. I want the event to be family friendly. and yes, their will be a dance floor. COST: $5 per head. Conces-sions will be avail-able.

RCC Adds New Division to Focus on Workforce Development

            ASHEBORO (April 25, 2014) – Randolph Community College will create a new division at the College with a “laser focus on work-force development” with the overall goal of “closing the skills gap” between job applicants and jobs available today, according to RCC President Robert S. Shackleford.             He made the announcement in a meeting of division personnel this week. The new division will be called Workforce Development and Continuing Education, and the College will be advertising to hire a vice president with strong industrial leadership experience to lead the changes.             Shackleford said that workforce development is at the heart of today’s economy, from grant funding agencies to state and local budget writers such as the Governor, State Legislators, and County Commissioners. He noted that the number one emphasis at an Eco-nomic Development retreat he attended a few months ago was “talent development.”             Shackleford said that he keeps hearing the same story: “At the same time we have a lot of people out of work, we have businesses and industries all over the state who are advertising for workers. They may have 50 people apply, but only a few qualify.”             “Despite our best efforts in corporate and continuing education, a job-skills gap remains for many of our citizens, and we need to better align our workforce development resources. This area is important enough to the College’s ongoing success and Randolph County’s success that it is time to add a position at the vice president level,” said Shackleford.             The new vice president for workforce development and continuing education will be heavily involved in a dialogue with industry leaders in Randolph County to help develop and evolve RCC’s curriculum.                       RCC’s current Corporate and Continuing Education division was folded into the Instructional Services division several years ago when the economic and workforce climate was much different than it is today. In addition to supervising Corporate and Continuing Edu-cation, Vice President for Instructional Services Anne Hockett also oversees all of the College’s Curriculum programs and personnel, Li-brary Services, Distance Education, the Archdale Center, and the Emergency Services Training Center.             “(Vice President Hockett) has been stretched very thin in covering two large divisions (curriculum and continuing education) and has done a yeoman’s job leading this vast scope of responsibility,” said Shackleford. “I see the addition of this new position as an important step in more equitably dividing all the work that needs to be done in both curriculum and workforce development/continuing education.”             Amanda Byrd, who is currently dean of corporate and continuing education, has been appointed to the position of division chair for Business and Commercial Arts curricula upon the retirement of the current chair this summer. That dean’s position will not be filled.             “There is a thriving manufacturing ecosystem steeped in tradition and innovation in Randolph County, with much more coming in the future with the expansion of advanced manufacturing and other areas,” said Shackleford. “RCC is at the heart of some incredible op-portunities as we build on our record of collaboration in workforce development and our commitment to work together to connect with companies to help design training to fill their specific needs.”

!OPERATION FALCON’S CREST RANDOLPH COUNTY – On April 16, 2014 the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office assisted NC Probation and Pa-role in Operation Falcon’s Crest. The purpose of this Operation was to conduct Probation searches of High Risk Offenders and High Risk Offenders whose crimes involve firearms and drug offenses. Numerous arrests were made for drugs, firearms and Probation Violations. During these searches, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office seized ap-proximately 222 grams of marijuana, 16 marijuana plants, a small amount of Methamphetamine, numerous prescrip-tion medications, drug paraphernalia and 10 firearms along with ammunition. As a result, eighteen people have been charged by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, as listed below. Further charges are pending on several additional suspects at this time. !Other local agencies assisted in this Operation, including Asheboro Police Department, Archdale Police Department, Liberty Police Department, Randleman Police Department, Ramseur Police Department, Seagrove Police Depart-ment, NC Highway Patrol, Randolph County Emergency Services, NC Army National Guard, NC Department of Corrections and US Marshall’s Service Violent Fugitive Task Force. !Person(s) Charged:

Logan Castlebury is a beautiful, strong and vivacious 21-year old young lady

who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s  Lymphoma in February 2014. Logan is

just starting her fight and we know medi-cal bills and daily expenses will be add-

ing up fast. Friends and family are organizing a BBQ and Auction benefit to

help Logan and her family.
