cratic Party will be vic-

torious at the polls on

March 7—overwhelm-

ingly so—is all but con-

firmed. But nothing is

ever certain in politics;

and that’s the reason for

having the Elections.

When the UDPwins on March 7, as it

almost certainly will, it

will be not so much a

victory for the Party, but

a triumph for the People

and Nation of Belize.

That was clearly

the pervading mood and

sentiment amid the gi-

gantic crowd that at-

tended the UDP rallyto launch its manifesto

on Wednesday of this

week. The outpouring

of national pride and

patriotism was spontane-

ous and unmistakable.

For quite some

time now, Dean Barrow

has proven himself to be

one of Belize’s most bril-

liant and successful poli-

ticians. In fact, he is the

only area representative

still sitting in the House

today who has won six

consecutive victories and

has never lost his seat.

As an attorney,

he has also been knownto be one of the best

and most successful.

Yet, what most de-

nes Dean Barrow today

is neither his perfect re-

cord as a politician nor

his brilliance and suc-

cess as an attorney. He

is most dened now by

his patriotism, his na-

tionalism, his populism. In four short years,

Dean Barrow has earned

the distinction of being

the greatest defender and

liberator of a people and

nation in this Twenty-

First Century. That is no

hyperbole. The numbers

at the rally on Wednesday

were real, and the mood

palpable. Check it out.Look around and tell us,

where else do you see such

a revolution occurring?

As to those in the

Opposition Party, they

are being left behind by

a mile because they have

refused to come to terms

with the fact that these

Elections are not really a

battle between two ma-  jor political parties, but

rather a war between

Politics and Patriotism;

and that under the cur-

rent prevailing mood,

there is no way the for-

mer can defeat the latter.

Death to Pol i -

tics! Long Live Patrio-

tism! Happy Elections!

manifesto was being unveiled.

And in similar fashion,

Prime Minister and Party Lead-

er Dean Barrow’s presentation

at that press conference launch

was as much a rostrum speech

as it was an ofcial address.Prior to his address,

there were presentations by

other standard bearers, outlin-

ing the essence of the mani-

festo. The accomplishments

of the past term were outlined

by Party Chairman, Honour-

able Patrick Faber, while the

pledges and commitments for

the term ahead were outlined in

three parts, by Hugo Pott from

the North, Hon. Eden Martinez

from the South, and Hon. JohnSaldivar from the Heart of the

Nation, Capital City Belmopan.

The Prime Minister took

the opportunity to cite other ac-

complishments and plans not

quite spelled out in the manifes-

to which, as he pointed out, had

its limitations as a document

that is by its nature concise.

He also pre-empted, in

a way, the People’s Launch by

introducing new candidates

added to the party slate during

the recent round of standard-

bearer conventions in prepara-

tion for the General Elections.

And he gave a kind of constitu-

ency by constituency analysis

of the odds and the party’s

expectations of victory in those

constituencies countrywide.

The atmosphere was  jubilant and the mood mili-

tant as party supporters and

campaigners cheered on party

leader Barrow and all standard

bearers on stage with boisterous

applause and shouts of victory.

The media was rather

subdued, only Jules Vasquez, as

expected, attempting to dissect

and question the substance of

the manifesto, as is his job and

responsibility as a journalist.

The exchange between him and

Party Leader Barrow was again,

as usual, convivial and enter-

taining, providing further fuel to

keep alive the jubilant and cel-

ebrative mood of the occasion.

Broadcast live on nation-

al radio, the event was chaired

by National Campaign Manager

and former UDP Minister Ru-

ben Campos. It was no doubt a

successful ofcial launch, just

the way the party planned it,we’re sure, and perfectly set-

ting the mood for the massive

rally that would take place later

at the party headquarters at the

foot of the BelChina Bridge.

his is the third visitthat I have made toOrange Walk dur-

ing the course o this UDP Victory our. And every time I think thatit can’t get any better, the crowdgrows bigger and bigger and big-ger; the size o the crowd that turnsout to support and welcome meand the United Democratic Party get’s more and more humongous.

You know, I sat there, andthere was a song that went throughmy mind. I listened to Landy, Ilistened to Gapi, I listened to ev-

erybody, and I’m paying attention, but this song is running throughmy mind. I was thinking about theact that I thought that it couldn’tget any better; but you know thatsong which goes, “You went andsaved the best or last.” (Applause)

You see how Landy toldyou that he never talked beorethe way he talked this evening;but the crowd energized him tooutdo himsel. Well I never sangon a microphone beore in my lie; but that is what you have donehere today in Palmar. (Applause)

On a very serious note, La-dies and Gentlemen, it’s wonderulto be here in the beautiul villageo Palmar; and I am so glad thatLandy Burns decided to hold thisrally here in Palmar, because, youknow traditionally, Palmar is kindo either or either; and certainly atthe time o the last village councilelections, Palmar voted or thePeople’s United Party. But Landy knew, as a consequence o his

campaigning here, that the villageo Palmar will support the UnitedDemocratic Party and OrlandoBurns in a massive ashion comeWednesday, March the 7th. And itis only tting that Landy chose Pal-mar or the battle ground this eve-ning. And I say again, what a won-derul crowd you have been; whata magnicent turnout. (Applause)

You have been patient;you have stayed here all aernoon, and it is because you are eelingit; in the same way Landy eelsit, you are eeling it. You knowthat there is the smell o a great

victory in the air. he UnitedDemocratic Party will be returnedto government on March the 7th.So, I want to thank all o you orcoming out this evening; and Iwant to thank you or what hap-pened on Wednesday in OrangeWalk own, and what happenedon Friday in Orange Walk own(Nomination Day for Municipal and General Election respectively).

Great Things Achieved - Greater Things Coming

PM Dean Barrow’s Speech at Orange Walk East Rally

And then, you watchedthe television images, and you sawthat exactly what happened here inOrange Walk happened through-

out the entire country o Belize; asea o red rom end to end in theNation o Belize. And everybody knows, everybody knows thatthe United Democratic Party willmake history. No government ever;no government ever; listen to mecareully; no government ever winsa second term with a bigger ma-

jority than they got or their rstterm. And I am telling you that thisis history in the making, becausethe United Democratic Party onMarch 7th will win no less than

boasting; it is about expressinggratitude to the people o thisCountry who believe, and areshowing this in a way that does not

permit or the slightest shadow o adoubt. Te People o this Country believe that this United Demo-cratic Party Government is the bestBelize has ever seen (applause).

Tere was a time when allthe media people, all the pundits, all the so-called experts, all theanalysts were saying, well, you allmight win again, you know, but i you win again it is because really the people have no choice becausenobody wants PUP again. AndI used to say to them, well ugly

this Country are showing orthe United Democratic Party, itis not because the PUP are bad,it is because the UDP is good.

Tere were times when thegoing got a little rough, but youwere always there to support us, toencourage us, maybe not in quitethe numbers we are beginningto see; but you the poor people, the aithul, always continued tomaintain the love and supportor your party; and or that weare eternally grateul. In the end,the entire country judges you in

pronouncing the judgment thatwill soon be a matter o record, the judgment that is inevitable.

his United DemocraticParty has demonstrated that neverin the history o Belize has a gov-ernment been on the side o thePeople in the way this UnitedDemocratic Party Governmenthas. What you see happening, thismagic that is in the air, it is notsomething that just comes up likethat; it doesn’t just spring up; itdoesn’t just arise. People are beingdriven by the recognition that thedeeds o the United DemocraticParty are there or all to see. Teevidence is there! here can beno doubt that we are the Govern-ment or the poor. Tere can beno doubt that we are the Govern-ment or the People. Tere can beno doubt that in terms o Educa-tion, in terms o ood subsidies,in terms o lower water bills, interms o lower electricity bills,in terms o the conditional cash

transer, in terms o second chanceopportunities, this is a govern-ment that has created the greatestsocial saety net in this Country.

And we don’t do it as amatter o strategy; we do it as amatter o conviction. I am happy and proud to say that every singleone o my Cabinet colleagues,

just as I do, believes heart andsoul in the philosophy o social

justice; and this is the Govern-ment that has at long last imple-mented a vision o social justicein the Country o Belize. Whatdo you think is generating all o this love? It is the combinationo social justice and nationalism.

Landy hit the nail on thehead. Tis is a government that isnot araid o anybody. Tis is a gov-ernment that doesn’t stop to countthe cost. Tis is a government thatno odds can intimidate. Tis is agovernment that will always dowhatever is necessary to place it

27 seats in the Country o Belize.

And I am being conserva-tive. You know, ladies and gentle-men. All o us are eeling the hype;the buzz is out there; the moodis out there; the sentiment is outthere; the eeling is out there. Inact, I had to tell some o our sup-porters, slow down. You knowwhat one o them told me? Te way this thing is going, we will win 32seats! Only 31 people are running, but he thinks we will win 32 seats.

On a serious note, ladiesand gentlemen, it is not about

win better than pretty lose, so we

will take it any way we can getit, even i you say it’s by deault.Tose same pundits, those sameexperts, those same analysts arenow conessing as to how wrongthey were; it is not that nobody wants the PUP, it is that every-body wants the UDP (applause).

What you see happening, what you saw on Wednesday, what you are seeing today, thistremendous unprecedented out-pouring o support and love, actualL-O-V-E, love, that the people o

Prime Minister Dean Barrow at Orange Walk East Rally

“here can be no doubt that we are the Govern-ment or the People. Tere can be no doubt that interms o Education, in terms o ood subsidies, interms o lower water bills, in terms o lower electric-ity bills, in terms o the conditional cash transer, interms o second chance opportunities, this is a gov-ernment that has created the greatest social saety net in this Country. And we don’t do it as a mat-ter o strategy; we do it as a matter o conviction.”

rmly on the side o the Peopleo this Country. Tis is a govern-

ment that has restored pride toBelize. Tis is a government thathas said to the outside world, wedon’t care how big you are big, wedon’t care how rich you are rich;whenever you meet Belizean spiritand will and determination, youwill have to give way, because weare coming like a mighty orce toensure that we enshrine national-ism, sovereignty as a paramounteature o Belizean culture andthe Belizean political landscape.

I want to close by telling

you just a little bit about what wehave planned or the next ve years.

o start with, that 300 dol-lars a year subsidy to rst and sec-ond ormers will go up immediately,we take oce again, to 350 dollars.

We shall expand the pro-poor programs. he Food Pan-try that is in Belize District andthe Cayo District, and the o-ledo District, we will ensure thatthe ood-subsidy, ood-pantry program is enshrined in every

single district o this Country. What we have done interms o the essential utilities andthe lowering o the electricity rates;it is right here in a ew days time, you will get your February bill, youknow; and when you get that Feb-ruary bill and you see how muchthe thing went down by, I believei we call a meeting then, we willhave a bigger celebration than whatwe are seeing out here this evening.

And we’ve already dealtwith the Ministry o Housing

and the Social Security Board;as soon as we take back oiceagain, we will start to write o the mortgages at the Develop-ment Finance Corporation.

And, this is the most sol-emn promise I want to make thisevening. Right now, because o what is happening in the interna-tional oil markets, we are gettinghammered at the pump. Every time a new shipment comes, dieselgone up; gasoline gone up; the last

time even kerosene gone up. Well,I make a promise that the UnitedDemocratic Party will deal withthat as soon as we get back intopower. I don’t care what we have todo to get the money and the exper-tise, we will establish a national re-nery so that the oil in this country, instead o being exported abroadand then having to be re-importedin the nished-product orm, willbe rened right here in Belize inorder to give you the consumerlower pump prices (applause).

We are talking to somepeople right now, and they aretelling us that this will take about18 months to do; and we will doit. But beore we even do that, we

will nd space in this country to setup storage tanks. And then we willbegin to buy the imported productin terms o oil rom Venezuela, which is giving us a special deal.

We might not have enough storagespace to take the Venezuelan oiland give everybody, but at the very

least, we will have enough storagespace so that all government de-partments will operate on the basiso the cheaper Venezuelan uel;and with the savings that we e-ect, we will then turn around andlower the taxes to you with respectto the imported petroleum prod-ucts, so that right away you willstart to see lower petroleum prices.

And inally, when I tellyou that this government is notaraid o a soul, you look on therecord with respect to the na-

tionalizations; you know that istrue. And that is why, in makingthe announcement about themarch 7th election I said we areasking the people o this Country or a new mandate to do sev-eral things, including somethingabout the Super Bond (applause).

Internet Networks License to each of the following applicants:

1.  STELLAR LINKS LTD.

2.  INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED.

3.  ALLIANCE IP (BELIZE) LTD.

An Internet Networks License is an Individual License that authorizes a Licensee to provide Internet

Service to the public and to build a network for the provision of such service.

Reason for proposed granting of Licenses:

The Commission intends to grant Licenses to the above applicants in order to promote further

competition in the provision of High Speed Internet Service.

Comments/Objections:

Interested persons may submit written representations or objections with respect to the proposed

Licenses on or before March 6, 2012, to the Public Utilities Commission, P.O. Box 300, #41Gabourel

Lane, Belize City, Belize.

All the bureaucrats in theMinistry o Finance, all the econo-

mists who are my advisors say,Boss, you can’t do that, becausethe rating agencies will downgradeBelize. You know what I told them?o hell with the rating agencies;no rating agency can come in my house and tell me what I must doand what I must not do; and whenthey downgrade a country, it meansthat the country i it is borrowingon the commercial market, as whatthe PUP used to do, will nd thecost o borrowing more expensive.

But I am not borrowing onany commercial market. We arepaddling our own canoe based onan economy that is striving rightnow, based on ourism numbersthat are through the roo, based oncitrus prices that have gone to thetop; I don’t need to go and borrowany money on any external com-mercial markets, so I don’t give adamn about any rating agencies.

What I am doing i stelling them, you know what,I am serving you notice, look

out and get ready because Be-lize is coming; we are coming.

Tere is no doubt that thePeople’s United Party, in terms o this super bond, did a horriblething to the people o Belize. But,I know or a long time; a wise mansaid it ions ago; you can’t have abad borrower i you don’t have abad lender. So, all o you out there,Mr. Man, who were happy to lendthe PUP this money and burden ustill kingdom come with this superbond, well hear this; we are comingback to you, and we are telling youthat you will re-negotiate that, youwill take down that interest rate;you will spread the maturity periodover a ar longer time. We will stoppaying that 8.5 percent interest andeighty odd million dollars a year, because we need that money tospend on the development o Be-lize, on the People o this Country.

So, you will nd, you willhear that the irst thing we doater being re-elected is to an-

nounce the appointment o ateam to go and renegotiate thatsuper bond to give us better rates,ar better rates, because we ain’ttaking it no more! (applause)

I know what I am doing, because I know that I have youthe people o Belize behind me.You know all o us in this Cabi-net. You know that we are notirresponsible; but you know thatwe are not conchs either. We haveblood running through our veins.

So, Mr. Super bond holder outthere, i you don’t come to termswith us, we will NO stop pay-ing you, you know; but we arenot going to pay you at the rate

it, because this is a people, the Be-lizean people who simply will notknuckle under to any oreigner;who simply will not knuckle underto any big man; who simply will

we are able to do because o you. When Landy was going

o, it reminded me that nothingo what he said was as true as hisreminder that he has always been awarrior or the United DemocraticParty, a warrior or Orange Walk;and that during the darkest dayso the UDP, when we were in thepolitical doldrums, when we werein the political wilderness, whenthey had conned us to a politicalinerno, Landy Burns hang all thesigns on his shop. He had no coveror his mouth. He stood tall, evenas a businessman, knowing that a

 vindictive government could have

pressured him, and he traced o Johnny Briceno, and he tracedo the PUP. And my point is thatit is that kind o warrior bloodthat is replicated throughout yourUDP Cabinet, throughout yourUDP Government. (Applause).

And that is why I close by saying, look out, World, Belize iscoming. hank you, ladies andgentlemen; just don’t let us getcomplacent. Come out March 7,continue the work between nowand then, and let that red tsunamiabsolutely wash away the People’sUnited Party, cleanse the land onemore time, and set up everythingor a period o even greater prog-ress and enlightenment; a periodo unmatched prosperity underthe second coming o your UnitedDemocratic Party (applause).

Buenas Noches. Des-de el ondo de mi corazon, unmillion de gracias! (Applause)

Great Things Achieved - Greater Things ComingPM Dean Barrow’s Speech at Orange Walk East Rally

that you are charging bus now.And i you don’t agree to re-

negotiate the rates so that we couldpay you what is manageable, thenyou know what? We will not pay you at all! (Applause) We, i they don’t come to terms with us, i they don’t see reason, we will deault onthe Super Bond and be proud o

not turn tail and run rom any large country. We are Belizeans;the blood o the Baymen runsthrough our veins. (Applause).

So, Ladies and Gentle-men, that is what is on the agenda;that is what is on the menu orthe second UDP term. Again, everything that we are able to do,

“Well, I make a promise that the United Demo-cratic Party will deal with that as soon as we get backinto power. I don’t care what we have to do to get themoney and the expertise, we will establish a national refnery so that the oil in this country, instead o being exported abroad and then having to be re-imported in the fnished-product orm, will be refned right here in Belize

Faith Lift

By Zelda Hill

Today in Belize, the

outcome of a trial

for the worst in-

  justice that can ever be

committed against another

human being is often pre-dictable. Murderers are

awarded with the free-

dom to repeat their grave

offenses despite the en-

hancements to our system

of law enforcement and

the judiciary. While the

pleas for the reinstitution

of the death penalty are

challenged by those who

merge capital punishment

with human rights abuse,

the lawless exact private

revenge and fuel the car-

nage. Some 600 years

before Christ’s birth, a

similar situation evolved

in the land of Israel, which

provoked God to issue a

reminder and a warning

to the prophet Ezekiel.

God said to the

prophet: “The sin of Israeland Judah is exceedingly

great; the land is full of

bloodshed and the city

is full of injustice. They

say, ‘the Lord has forsaken

the land; the Lord does

not see.’ So I will not

look on them with pity

or spare them, but I will

bring down on their own

heads what they have

done (Ezekiel 9:9-10).”

W h i l e s o m e

may a rg u e t h a t o u r

country’s predicament

is a consequence of the

global economic crisis,

we can rest assured that

our recovery rests in

the hands of God. His

in accordance with our

Roll Out Te Justice, Please!

“When a lie is intentionally snued out by another human being, beore birth or ater,

generations o potential lives are also included

in the total loss to humankind. For these rea-sons and more, murder is such a grave injus-tice which we must not continue to pardon.”

individual and collective

obedience has not expired

(Deuteronomy 11:26-27)

and He still holds an entire

nation accountable when

we fail to demand or deliver

  justice for those who are

being innocently slain.

God is just and our

desire for justice endors-

es the revelation that we

are created in His im-

age and likeness (Genesis

1:26-27). The Bible con-

rms that God establishes

nations that follow His

statutes and withdraws

His blessing from those

that neglect to do what

is just and right (Jeremi-

ah 12:17;18:8-9). God

is omnipresent and His

eyes behold the evil and

the good while His handsmove to exact judgment

when innocent blood pol-

lutes the land and justice is

denied. In the Scriptures,

the Psalmist lamented on

the time when the Israelites

shed innocent blood by

sacricing their children

to the idols of Canaan and

God exacted revenge by

allowing an enemy nationto rule over and oppress

them (Psalm106:37- 42).

Even before the Is-

raelites entered Canaan,

God advised them to set

aside cities of refuge for

those who killed uninten-

tionally because if inno-

cent blood was shed, the

people would be guilty of

bloodshed. The one who

hated his neighbor and lay

in wait for him and killed

him, was handed over to

the avenger of blood to

die because the guilt of

shedding innocent blood

had to be purged so that

it may go well with the

nation (Deut 19:10-13).

On another occa-

sion, when God was ready

to pass judgment on Je-

rusalem because of their

iniquity, including all the

bloodshed, He ordered

an angel to mark only the

foreheads of the people

who grieved and lament-

ed over all the detestable

things that were done in

it. Those with the mark

were spared from God’s

wrath (Ezekiel 9:1-10).

Former AmericanPresident, Thomas Jeffer-

son, once said , “I tremble

for the future of my coun-

try when I’m reminded

that God is just. And that

His justice will not sleep

forever.” As beings that

share God’s likeness in

attributes, we should hate

what God hates and love

what He loves. The griev-ing and lamenting over

the shedding of innocent

blood should not only be

heard by those who suffer

such loss but our collective

cries for justice should be

constant and shattering un-

til God’s appointed agents

who are not to “bear the

sword in vain” inict just

punishment on those who

do wrong (Romans 13:4).

In addition to pro-

voking God’s judgment

and interrupting the com-

fort of human life, mur-

der is acclaimed by the

devil who Jesus said is “a

murderer from the begin-

ning” (John 8:44). His

goal is to destroy the hu-

man race, physically and

spiritually, because Hedespises those who are

created in God’s image.

When a life is in-

tentionally snuffed out by

another human being, be-

fore birth or after, genera-

tions of potential lives are

also included in the total

loss to humankind. For

these reasons and more,

murder is such a grave

injustice which we must

not continue to pardon.

As a nation, we do

not want to fall under the

 just judgments of God and

incur heavier penalties.

On the contrary, we

desire peace, plenty, and

prosperity of every kind and

such will be afforded to our

nation when “justice rolls

on like a river and right-eousness like a never-fail-

ing stream (Amos 5:24)”.
