TARN NEWS & Coronavirus

The measures taken by HM Government in the past month to try and ensure that therate of spread of Coronavirus can be contained within those levels that will allow the NHSto offer treatment in a timely and maximally effective way, not just to those infected withCoronavirus but to those with other illnesses, will have profound effects for all of us.It is already apparent that most of the community activities that the Tarn News normally

promotes have been cancelled or suspended until further notice. Initially, social isolationto reduce the rate of spread of this disease may seemmanageable, but for the infirm andsenior citizens who are at greatest risk from Coronavirus it will pose a range of newchallenges to which the community has already attempted to respond. For this reasonwhilst it may seemappropriate to suspend publication of the TarnNews, I feel that it wouldbe useful to continue to use the newsletter as a conduit for information about accessingsuch support. On March 18th I began to set up a Tarn News website with a view toaugmenting the local information network for those who have access to the internet.I was already having doubts about producing a print copy for this month, and the

enhanced restrictions designed to control the spread of Coronavirus announced by HMGovernment on Monday 23rd March led me to the conclusion that I should publish thisedition electronically only. It canbedownloaded in either screen readable or printer formatfrom the website. Further information about the website tarnnews.org is on page 12. Thewebsite is being funded by a personal donation and will not draw on existing funds.George Nasmyth, Editor Tarn News

CHURCHES IN LOW FURNESSChanging role & worship in the context of the Coronavirus outbreak

As you may be aware from the media, the Archbishops of Canterbury & York haveannounced the suspension of public worship in churches - with immediate effect. As aconsequence there will be no services at any of the Churches in Low Furness, or inany other venue until further notice. Those churches that are normally open duringthe day(Aldingham, Bardsea & Urswick) will remain open, and the ministry team willbe looking at how it can support continued worship and Christian outreach in the faceof the difficulties that the current pandemic pose.

Extracts and synopsis from a communication from the Archbishops ofCanterbury & York that summarises the Church of England's approach tothe current outbreak and the local response:

It has always been the historic vocation of the Church of England to be the church foreveryone.WilliamTemple, oneof thegreatArchbishopsofCanterbury andYork of the lastcentury, is often quoted as saying that we are the one organisation which exists for thebenefit of its ‘non-members’. As the challenge of the coronavirus grips the world, and astheGovernment asks every individual and every organisation to rethink its life, weare nowasking the Church of England in all its parishes, chaplaincies and ministries to serve allpeople in a new way. Public worship will have to stop for a season. Our usual pattern ofSunday services and other mid-week gatherings must be put on hold. But this does notmean that the Church of England has shut up shop. Far from it.We need to look at new ways of serving everyone:1. There will not be public worship that everyone can attend, but an offering of prayer

and praise for the nation and for the world can be made by those in ministry and all otherChristiansChurch buildingswill be kept open for private prayer wherever possible, this will include

the Low Furness Churches of Aldingham, Bardsea and Urswick.2. If churches and worshipping communities have the resources to live stream

then they should do so. Locally that opportunity is not yet available, but theopportunity to listen to Sunday Church services in the diocese will be available onRadio Cumbria FM 96.1- either tune in or see their website for further details.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-51906816At the same time, nationally, if you have access to the internethttps://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/join-us-service-daily-

prayerandalso locally viaRev. LucieLunn, written resourcesareavailable for prayer and

worship in the home which do not require internet access.

3. Many people are going to suffer during these coming months as the coronavirusreaches its peak. Tragically there will be deaths and so many will be grieving and fearful. We, the Church of Jesus Christ, with our sisters and brothers from other Christianchurches, must be in the forefront of providing practical care and support for themost poorand the most vulnerable, and we offer our services to all those who are beginning to thinkthrough how best to provide for those in need: see below for local support services.Being a part of the Church of England is going to look very different in the days ahead.

Our life is going to be less characterised by attendance at church on Sunday, and morecharacterised by the prayer and service we offer each day. We may not be able to praywith people in the ways that we are used to, but we can certainly pray for people. And wecan certainly offer practical care and support. Please do carry on supporting the localfoodbank and buy extra provisions for it. There are many very encouraging schemeshappening right across our country in communities to focus on caring for the mostvulnerable, so do continue to play your part in those.

Locally the Church will be preparing a process of offering support to those in isolationin a variety of different ways, and this will be coordinated whenever appropriate withthat offered by other organisations. For April 2020, in the light of the enhanced concerns about the spread of coronavirus, and therelated restrictions to minimise that spread and protect the vulnerable - the Editor has set up aTarn News website and will update that website on a regular basis. The website address is onpage 13.

PCC meetings & APCMs, elections, etc.cannot currently take place onexpected timescalesA Bishop's Instrument has been prepared which will allow:

• APCMs and “Vestry Meetings” to be delayed beyond 31 May until 31October 2020 .

• To extend the office of elected lay members of the PCC to the conclusion ofthe delayed APCM.

• To extend the period of office of those Deanery Synod lay representativesuntil the conclusion of the delayed APCM.

• To extend the period of office for the current Churchwardens until theirsuccessors have been appointed and

• Finally to extend the admission date for Churchwardens beyond 31 July2020 to 31 January 2021.

Funny old world isn’t it. I read in yesterday’s paper, the Labour Party has just suspended Trevor Phillips

because he is ‘islamophobic’. Apparently one of his crimes is commenting that ‘Muslimsdon’t attempt to fit in toBritish culture.’ Nowobviously by the timeyou read this,MrPhillipsmight have been burned at the stake by the ‘woke’ twitterati. Hereticsmeetwith summaryjustice in our modern secular world. But one commentator raised a pertinent point. How is it an insult to say that a practicing

Moslem, or practicing Christian, doesn’t fit in to modern British secular culture? I cannotclaim to speak for the followers of Islam, but Christians are called upon to be counter-cultural. Between ourselves, if somebody congratulated me on how well I fitted in, I’d beoffended (Not that I can imagine anybody would actually care). But how are wecountercultural? Let’s look at what Jesus told us to be; take humility, “For everyone whoexaltshimselfwill behumbled, andhewhohumbleshimselfwill beexalted” (Luke14:11).”

Others have noticed this.Shakespeare puts the followingwords into the mouth ofMacbeth when he hears of hiswife’s death. “Life, which hadbeen the tomb of his virtue andof his honour, is but a walkingshadow; a poor player thatstruts and frets his hour uponthe stage, and then is heard nomore: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifyingnothing.” Not a lot of room forsmug self-congratulation therethen.Given that it was their

ambition that got Macbeth and his wife into that place, exalting themselves was notending well. But still, a passing acquaintance with social media or the newspapers willshow you that we live in a society where everybody is trying to push themselves forward.I saw where somebody still gets the annual Christmas Round Robin letter posted to thelong departed previous occupant of their house. To quote them “We receive a card withthe most smug round-robin letter included, written in an unnaturally pretentious manner- a reference to articles in the Guardian and the usual potted history of the family year. The children, Alice, Josh and Ailis have all fled the nest. Lukas is back from 10 monthsof travelling (including a 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat) and is now trying tochoose the best acting school, leaving only Hester at home along with the four cats, dog,2horses, 8 chickens, 8 sheepand twopigs (now in the freezer). Theyhaddecided tohavea quiet 25th wedding anniversary so went to their "lovely little casita" in Mallorca.”One thingweenjoy is thearrogant getting their comeuppance.Whenoneof us, the little

people, strikes back, the rest of us tend to applaud. Somebody wrote, "I was in the

Express Lane at the store, quietly fumingbecause a woman, completely ignoringthe “Express Lane--6 Items only" sign, slipped into the check-out line ahead of me,pushing a cart piled high with groceries.Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward, and

looking into her cart, asked sweetly, "So, which six items would you like to buy?"But this brings us back to being counter-cultural, in Jesus we follow the person who

washed the feet of his disciples.Indeedhesaid, “Youknow that the rulers of theGentiles lord it over them, and their high

officialsexerciseauthorityover them. Not sowithyou. Instead, whoeverwants tobecomegreatamongyoumustbeyour servant, andwhoeverwants tobe firstmustbeyour slave.”In spite of most of them having at least a

passing familiarity with these words, ourrulers still show a tendency to throw theirweight about. Of course, people notice thisand we react accordingly. “A touristwanders into a back-alley antique shop inSan Francisco's Chinatown. Pickingthrough the objects on display he discoversa detailed, life-sized bronze sculpture of arat. The sculpture is so interesting andunique that he picks it up and asks the shopowner what it costs. "Twelve dollars for therat, sir," says the shop owner, "and athousand dollars more for the story behindit.""You can keep the story, old man," he

replies, "but I'll take the rat."The transaction complete, the tourist

leaves the store with the bronze rat underhis arm. As he crosses the street in front ofthe store, two live rats emerge from a sewerdrain and fall into step behind him.Nervously looking over his shoulder, hebegins to walk faster, but every time he passes another sewer drain, more rats come outand followhim.By the timehe'swalked twoblocks, at least ahundred ratsareat hisheels, and people begin to point and shout. He walks even faster, and soon breaks into a trotas multitudes of rats swarm from sewers, basements, vacant lots, and abandoned cars.Rats by the thousands are at his heels, and as he sees the waterfront at the bottom ofthe hill, he panics and starts to run full tilt. No matter how fast he runs, the rats keep up,squealing hideously, now not just thousands but millions, so that by the time he comes

rushing up to the water's edge a trail of rats twelve city blocks long is behind him.Making a mighty leap, he jumps up onto a light post, grasping it with one arm while he

hurls the bronze rat into San Francisco Bay with the other, as far as he can heave it.Pullinghis legsupandclinging to the light post, hewatches inamazement as theseethingtide of rats surges over the breakwater into the sea, where they drown. Shaken andmumbling, he makes his way back to the antique shop. "Ah, so you've come back for thestory," says the owner."No," says the tourist, "I was wondering if you have a bronze politician."But we’re not just called to be countercultural, we’re called to reach out to those whom

the dominant culture rejects. As St Paul said, “Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into

this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest and the best” among you, not many influential, notmany from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chosemen andwomen that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these “nobodies” toexpose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”?”It doesn’t get a lot more countercultural than that.

COMMUNITY NEWSBus update from the 'Friends of the X112'.

We can, at last, report that our application for Section 22 permits from the TrafficCommissioner for the NorthWest has moved forward by one big step since our last updatebut it hasn't reached a conclusion yet. Sadly the bit of reasonably good news is nowcompletelyovershadowedbywhat is happening in theworld at themoment.Like everythingelse uncertainty hangs over the bus services just at a time when public transport was highon the political agenda and things were looking up rather than just 'bumping' along theground.

For the last five and a half years many, many people all along the bus routes havestrived to bring communities together and prevent social isolation and allowpeople to retaintheir independence. With the help of Blueworks and their team of drivers we havemanagedto do that reasonably successfully, despite many problems and disappointments along theway.

In the event that over the next few months many of us do lose our independencebecause we are confined to our homes please rest assured that we will do all we can to keepin touch with you and offer support where we can. The 'Friends' can be contacted throughthe 'Friends of the X112' facebook page, by ringing 01229 835712 or e-mailing;[email protected].

Recentlywe have been asked by several peoplewhat actually happens to themoneythat the 'Friends' raise ( the total amount sinceOct. 2014 is around £130,000). Please believeuswhenwe say that every penny that is raised, fromwhatever source, goes towards keepingthe buses running. The only money that does not go directly to Blueworks is used towardsmarketing and advertising the buses. Those of us on the Board of Trustees for the charityare all completely unpaid volunteers.

On that note can we thank everyone for their contributions over the last few years,in particular on this occasion, all those who pay into the Standing Order Scheme. It is easyto forget how important that money is!

I run a small business. It’s been a very difficult sixmonths forus - we lost a contract with one of our major clients and I justhaven’t been able to replace it with new business. Now I’vereceived a huge energy bill. It feels like the last straw and I'mreally stressed.

The first thing to do is to call the Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133. They canoften help to resolve problems with energy suppliers. Do this quickly - if you’re on a businesscontract and you are disconnected, an extra fee can be added to your bill, and another chargefor being reconnected.

Check the bill is correct and not estimated. If you are a microbusiness they can’t send you a billdatingback longer thanayear. If thebill is correct, but you just can’t afford it, yourenergysuppliermight agree to a payment plan. The Business Debtline number is 0800 197 6026.

You may find switching energy companies will save you money. You could also try energyefficiency measures such as switching off computers and other equipment overnight, usingenergy efficient light bulbs or making sure your premises are insulated..

CRIME PREVENTION AND OTHER INFORMATION

Pop Up Community drop in sessions continue at The Parish Rooms on a monthly basis tocontinue throughout 2020 continued on page 22.

continued from page 20 - Urswick WIis not made unnecessarily stressful. Marina explained there are over 40 different types ofdementia, the most well-known forms of dementia being Alzheimer’s and Vasculardementia.

As part of their mission at FGH to ensure patients with dementia are safe and their well-being is considered during their stay FGH operates the ‘Butterfly Scheme. The Butterflyscheme was devised by a carer whose mother spent long periods in hospital and is nowa national scheme in use in over 200 hospitals. The scheme enables medical staff torespond appropriately and positively to patients during their treatment including whendiscussion of medication or procedures is done ,how food is to be provided, eg snacks atany time of the day or night, a menu which is pictures not words and ensures their carersare kept fully informed of all decisions taken. Those patients who have opted into theButterfly scheme have a discreet Butterfly symbol placed next to their name on theirrecords scheme.

FGH also operate John’s campaign for patients with dementia ,memory impairment ortemporary confusion , this scheme allows carers to spend extended time with their familymember outside of normal visiting hours so they can help them with eating at mealtime’s ,reading to them ,washing or helping with their morning or bedtime routine if theywish to do so, so the person has a familiar and comforting face with them.

Members of the WI were heartened to hear of FGH’s open & compassionate approachto patients admitted in what can be often be a confusing and stressful time for them awayfrom their familiar surroundings and families or carers and an approach which will providecomfort and re-assurance to their carers and families.

Sadly, our April meeting is now cancelled due to the Corvid-19 outbreak and theCommittee will contact members oncemeetings resume hopefully in June or July.We wish everyone good health and to stay well until we meet again.
