...For Your Information... RMD Charitable Tax Break

If you’re required to take a minimum distribution from your IRA, you have the option to make that distribution tax free by directing it to the charity of your choice. It’s called “Qualified charitable distributions” (QCD’s)

These distributions can be a convenient way to support charitable causes and get a tax break while meeting tax re-quirements for IRAs.

In understanding qualified distributions, it’s helpful to recall the basics of required minimum distributions (RMDs):

With the new rule that went into effect in 2020, individuals will not have to take RMDs from traditional IRAs and retire-ment plans until April 1 following the year they turn 72.

You generally must withdraw a minimum amount each year from your traditional IRAs (ROTH IRAs are excluded) and employer-sponsored retirement plans. The money you’re required to withdraw gets added to your taxable income. Fail-ure to take your RMD by year-end could result in a stiff IRS penalty—50% of the amount you should have withdrawn.

Under the renewed QCD rule, you can have all or part of your distribution made directly from your IRA to a quali-fied charity (up to $100,000 per taxpayer, per year). Unlike conventional RMDs, QCDs aren't subject to ordinary federal income taxes.

However, donor-advised funds aren’t eligible for QCDs. To contribute from your IRA to a donor-advised fund, you’ll still need to take your distribution, pay the income taxes and penalties, and then offset them with a contribution into your philanthropic account.

You should consider consulting with a professional advisor to determine from not only an income tax perspective, but also an estate planning perspective, how best to achieve your wealth and charitable planning objectives.

Edward Jones has informed us that they can set up a monthly check (or any schedule you may want) to go out of an IRA directly to the church. You may check with the business that takes care of your IRA to see if this can be done.

*The information provide here is intended to be general and educational in nature and shouldn’t be construed as a substitute for legal or tax advice. Please consult an independent legal and/or tax advisor for specific advice about your individual situation.

Some Things Never Change

As I write this article for the April newsletter, changes are happening at a fast pace and the future is full of unknowns.

How will we observe Palm Sunday? Will we be able to worship together during Holy Week and on Easter? I wish we had this all figured out, but the situation keeps changing and we are doing our best to keep up and to communicate new information via email.

At the same time this congregation is in between votes to leave the ELCA. At its last meeting, your council tentatively set May 31 as the day to meet again for the second vote. But will we be able to gather by that time?

Whenever the second vote is held, if it passes there are some other unknowns to follow. For example, I will not be able to continue as your interim pastor and the call process will change. How the joint arrangements with Trinity and Immanuel will be affected is another unknown. The hope is for these programs to continue unchanged. I imagine discussions and meetings will be held with Immanuel’s council and their new pastor, Rev. Jeff Corson.

On a personal level, people are being impacted emotionally, socially and financially. Everyone is facing changes and unknowns in their own lives.

At such a time as this, it’s good to know we have a God whose love, mercy, faithfulness and promises are unchanging. No matter what may come, God is with us. Dwell on these beautiful words from the Apostle Paul to the church at Rome:

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to sepa-rate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35, 37-39.

What good news! I see the love of God in Christ Jesus everywhere as people are responding to the present crisis with kindness, patience, concern, support and action.

So, even as we continue to deal with changes and unknowns, let us give thanks for what we DO know! Let us continually turn our hearts to God in prayer. Let us turn to God’s Word in Scripture and God’s Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. Let us continue to be alert to ways we can help others. Remember, prayer makes a difference!

May the Lord bless you and keep you in His unchanging love.

Council Minutes Trinity Lutheran Church March 17, 2020

The Trinitarian

Any information you would like in the April news-letter must be submitted in its entirety by Monday,

April 20th—No Exceptions!! Thanks in advance!

Remember our Cemetery

Just a reminder that our cemetery’s income is from sales of plots, and for the small amount of farm land north of the cemetery. There aren’t very many plots sold, so very little funds are coming in for the care of the cemetery.

Please consider the cemetery if you have to make deductions from your IRA’s. You may want to con-sider naming it in your will.

Thanks!

The Committee

Just a Reminder

Our expenses here at Trinity go on, even if we don’t have every-one here for worship services. You may mail your contributions, drop them in the basket on the coat rack outside Karen’s office, or donate on our website.

On the web site, the contributions can be made with a credit card or bank withdrawal. The contribution can be one time only or can be set up for weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and more. It can be stopped at any time. At this time, the contribution will go to the cur-rent fund. If you would like to donate to another fund, please contact Karen and it other funds can be added.

Thank you in advance!!
