GRACE ASSEMBLY OF GOD MCI (P) 053/12/2018

APRIL 2019

We all know the importance of prayer and something special takes place when God’s people come together to pray.

I believe wholeheartedly that corporate prayer brings about a corporate anointing.

2 Chronicles 20:4 NIV4The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

Jehoshaphat prayed and he called his people to pray. The people responded and together they experienced the mighty hand of God working powerfully in their challenging situation.

Acts 2:1 NIV1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

The disciples came together to pray and out of that prayer meeting it gave birth to the church. “Have you ever noticed that Jesus launched the church, not while someone was preaching, but while people were praying?” Jim Cymbala.

God graciously gave us the example of the early church, as seen in Acts 2, to spur us on. May we not forget the power and priority of corporate prayer.

Both these verses speak powerfully of corporate prayer.

In my last sermon, I preached on the Lord’s prayer and I also highlighted that we will make some changes to J333, our corporate prayer meeting.

Starting from April, we will only have J333 in one location instead of two. This change will help us to be

more concerted and consolidated in strengthening J333.

Therefore, J333 will be as follows:

1st and 3rd Wednesdays – GI

2nd and 4th Wednesdays – GII

5th Wednesday – Alternate between GI and GII (It will be a time of teaching on prayer).

I am urging every Gracian to make a commitment to come for at least one J333 a month. It will be a powerful time when Gracians gather together in one accord and with one heart praying fervently to God.

It’s a time where we as a church:

# Ascribe greatness to the Lord

# Acknowledge our total dependence on God.

TOGETHER WE PRAY!

NEW GR ACE

# Acclaim the faithfulness of God

# Appeal based on the promises of God

# Advance the kingdom of God on our knees.

Let us make some adjustments to our schedule, put aside some activities, and make a firm commitment to make time so that together we make a significant difference in the spiritual realm.

You do your part, together we do our part and we look to the Lord to do His big part to bring about a fresh breakthrough in Grace Assembly.

Let's pray:

1. That God will lead us personally, as a church and as a nation into true repentance for not seeking Him enough and of tolerating sin in our nation.

2. That we will humble ourselves and pray and seek God's face and turn from our wicked ways, that God will hear from heaven and will forgive our sins and heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

3. That this event will bring churches & Christian organisations closer together in greater unity for it is in unity that God will command greater blessings.

4. For a mighty spiritual awakening all across Singapore with signs and wonders accompanying the manifest presence of God.

5. For a great bumper harvest of souls through the Celebration of Hope reaching the homes, marketplaces, our nation's next generation as well as the foreign workers in our land.

With the Celebration of Hope coming up in May, we beseech God through Prayer & Intercession, to prepare the harvest force, the harvest field and the harvest yield.

The Lord has blessed the body of Christ with many gifted teachers and preachers who helped unveil our eyes to behold wonderful truths from God's Word. However, this does not replace the need for us to learn how to glean from the Word of God and hear God speak to us personally.

This is the challenge that this series brings. Pastor Benny Ho challenges us to learn how to feed ourselves with the Living Word of God using the SOAP format as a basic framework and to keep a devotional journal.

When something unexpected, disappointing, or traumatic occurs, children feel a very real sense of loss. They may respond with fear or with anger. Most likely they are confused.

They have questions they want answered. They need help from their parents or others who care to understand and process their grief.

It’s Okay to Cry offers practical help for parents. It explains the symptoms of loss and unresolved grief so that parents can recognize them and walk alongside their children on the path to recovery.

FEBRUARY WHOLENESS SEMINAR2019

E M P O W E R I N G T H E F A M I L I E S

24 people attended the Seminar, of which many were young adults. It was held from 21 to 23 February.

We launched new ministry and teaching materials in this Seminar. The revised version of the Wholeness Seminar included topics on dealing with abandonment and rejection, dealing with sexuality issues, dealing with accident, abuse and trauma. We witnessed the openness of the people as we shared our life stories and teachings.

Inner healing is a discipleship tool that every Christian can use to pray for himself or herself. Every participant was given The Wholeness Toolbox, and individual ministry sessions were arranged to set them free in the Lord. The feedback from the participants was very positive and encouraging. Here are some excerpts:

"Life-changing."

"Very needed."

"Everyone has deep-rooted emotional burdens that may not be seen by leaders and members in church.... Every believer needs to attend and be free from the bondage of strongholds to live an ongoing healed Christian life."

Come, experience breakthroughs in your life. Experience intimacy with our Father God. Mark your dates on your calendar for the next Wholeness Seminar.

Dates: 19 (Fri), 20 & 27 July (Sat)

Venue: GII (Ministry Sessions are in GI)

Let’s be honest, weddings in Singapore are a lot of work. Ask any couple planning a wedding, and you’ll see that love, diamond rings, and excel sheets go hand in hand.

Maybe it’s because, as true Singaporeans, we are a bit kiasu and try to cover all bases. After all, if our cultural traditions are good, and Christian traditions are good, satisfying BOTH cultural and Christian traditions must be the MOST GOOD! Add on the renovations for the BTO flat simultaneously, and your excel sheet is starting to look a bit long.

However, at the end of the day, the wedding and the house are only accessories to the main event – the marriage itself. So it would certainly be worthwhile to discover the meaning of marriage from the eyes of the one who created it (which is God, not Timothy Keller).

“The bible begins with a wedding (Adam and Eve) and ends in the book of Revelation with a wedding (of Christ and the church). Marriage is God’s idea.”

Timothy Keller does a tremendous job explaining the many facets of biblical marriage such as: God’s purpose for marriage, the husband-wife relationship, gender roles, sex, singleness, and more.

Prepare to have your mind blown (into understanding) by the barrage of truth bombs that TK launches at you throughout the book, such as:

• True freedom is only found through obligation

• Your partner should be a friend before a lover

• The person you marry will become a stranger to you

Of course, we are not going to elaborate on the above, because that would spoil the book.

Overall, we highly recommend ‘The Meaning of Marriage’. However, as its title suggests, the book is not one that focuses on practical tips and tricks for daily married life. The biblical vision for marriage is (rightfully) lofty, so we would suggest finding a balance by also consulting other more practical-minded books, and of course seeking out the advice of marriage mentors through the Family Life ministry at Grace.

‘The Meaning of Marriage’ will certainly occupy a permanent slot in our bookshelf, and we can imagine ourselves re-reading it decades in the future, as the principles found within are timeless.

E M P O W E R I N G T H E F A M I L I E S

One night when we were doing our quiet time, both my kids asked me, “Why do you stay so positive mummy?” This was followed by jokes about how I’m actually a space unicorn in disguise, delivering rainbows across the skies as they slept.

Jokes aside, I decided it was time to let them in the secret to my resilience no matter how hard circumstances got.

It’s found in Hebrew 12:1-2.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

In the middle of my greatest struggles, when everything that can go wrong goes wrong, and I am wading knee deep in mud and can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, I manage to get out because of this verse.

That night I taught my kids a powerful lesson and in this article I hope to empower you with the same lessons to pass onto your kids.

1. Keep your eyes on the outcome. Jesus was beaten, afflicted, scourged and ill treated for hours on end. He

was emotionally berated. Then nailed to a cross. He bore the pain because He knew the outcome - tour salvation.

In our crisis, time of need and challenging moments, we too need to keep our eyes on what the outcome would be once we got past these tough times – a campaign win, an experience gained, the satisfaction of knowing you didn’t give up.

The same goes with our kids. When they’re going through a struggle in their schools, with relationships, with exams, homework, a tough teacher, sit with them and talk remind them of the outcome. A few weeks, months, years from now, it will be over. There will be lessons learned, experiences gained, things to look back at with satisfaction, even with humour thinking, did I really do all that? Focusing on the outcome will help your kids go through their moments of struggle and come out satisfied knowing they didn’t give up midway.

2. They’re not in it alone. I have taught my kids that every experience no matter how tough is a

privilege given to them by God. And He’s allowed them to experience it because He has inputed into them everything they need to go through it by His grace. God is with them in the valley, helping them face their fears. Daniel has always been very open to me about His relationship with God. Sarah is a bit more reserved when it comes to talking about the spirit world. I have been conscious not to push nor over-compensate.

But I remember one morning, while sending her to school, she told me she felt afraid in school because she wasn’t sure about which bus to take as they had changed the school bus numbers. I asked her what she did. She said she prayed. She wasn’t sure what else to do. I told her that’s the best thing she could have done. Then she told me, someone came and told her which bus to take. Whether it’s the little moments of uncertainty or the bigger challenges, your kids don’t have to experience them alone. They can ask God for help and go through it with His grace and mercy.

3. Winning doesn’t always constitute a good outcome. Look at Jesus. Scourged, beaten, nailed to a cross where He gave up His

life, all at the age of 33. He only rose again after three day. If you looked at the immediate outcome, by the world’s standard it looked more like

defeat. Abraham never became a father of an entire nation in his lifetime. It happened long after he died. Yet today we look back and think how full of faith he must have been and what wonderful outcome he enjoyed. The actual truth is, the outcome he enjoyed was just two sons - one born out of sin.

Don’t evaluate your kid’s outcome by the world’s standards. Look at it through God’s eyes. The lessons learned, the experiences gained are far greater than winning or losing. And sometimes, as in the case of Jesus, victory might take a few days, even a few months or years to come. Trust in the process that God is taking them through because in some situations the outcome doesn’t just await at the finish line. It’s been there developing all along the journey.

The next time your kids go through a hard time, remember these three points and that God is there in the heart of everything. Put your trust in God and keep your eyes on the prize - not victory from a human sense, but what God is birthing inside you kids as a result of this experience.

As parents we need to pray for Godly foresight to see God’s plans for our children’s future and enable them to catch that vision God has for their lives. So whatever they may go through, their eyes are fixed on the prize - the larger outcome - the plans God has for them.

Did You Know that 1 In 7 People in Singapore Have Experienced a Mental Disorder? By REACH Community Services Society

A 2016 study by Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS) found that one in seven people in Singapore (or 13.9 per cent) have experienced specific mood, anxiety, or alcohol use disorders in their lifetime—an increase from roughly one in eight (12 per cent) six years prior.

Unfortunately, most of these sufferers (more than three-quarters) did not seek any professional help. And the small proportion of people who did seek help took years to do so. The longest duration one took to seek help was a whopping 11 years; an increase of two years since 2010. The two common reasons for treatment delay, researchers said, were the inability to recognise symptoms, and concerns regarding metal illness stigma.

Here’s a comparative chart in treatment delay showing data collected from both 2010 and 2016 studies:

Grace Lee, Head of REACH Family Service commented that there are many different people who suffer from mental disorders. They are people in the community whom we meet in our daily life. From older clients who already have histories of mental illness, to adults, adolescents and children. Mental disorders were most prevalent in the young adult range of 26-45 years of age. This is the group which requires a lot of psycho-social support from their family members, friends and their community, including religious organisations. As working adults, they usually have multiple needs and stressors due to the life stage they are in. Most of them also have co-morbidity, such as, family/spousal violence, suicidal intention, aggression, and lack emotional regulation. They are either out of the medical system or do not want to seek treatment because of fear and stigmatization. They therefore tend to remain in a vicious cycle and are alone in their journey of mental illness. If the correct interventions and support are given to them, they have the greatest potential to be rehabilitated. Medical treatments are not the most helpful, but psycho-social rehabilitation (including spiritual support) proves more effective for them.

Another group that is especially in danger of developing mental disorders is children and adolescents between 12-19 years old. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health (WMH) surveys, the onset of mental disorders usually occurs during childhood or adolescence. “With the many young people we see in Singapore today, we should make sure that we do not ‘act’ only when an illness or disorder is officially diagnosed before we take actions. Because by then, it might be too late and it is definitely going to derail that young person’s potential and opportunities in life”, Joe Chan, Head of REACH Youth Service cautioned.

Jessie Koh, Head of REACH Counselling Service, observed that many of her clients, who walk through the door of our counselling centre for various issues, might have symptoms of mental disorder. Most people did not recognise that they have a "disorder" and as such did not seek early treatment. However, more people are now seeking help for their mental illness and/or disorders.

In the initial stage of mental disorders, people often think they are stressed out. Thus, they wait to see if the symptoms get better. As most caregivers are unaware of the severity of the situation, some think that a one-time consultation and medication is sufficient and no follow-up treatment is needed. Therefore, as mental health workers, we need to provide the relevant information, knowledge, skills and psychoeducation to the community, the clients and their caregivers. Prevention work is critical. Creating awareness on preventive mental health, managing and coping with stress, and developing strong social support systems is necessary.

Hence, in working with persons with mental health issues, we need to take a systemic and holistic approach, such as working with the family, the community, the clients and the system. So let us all be aware and sensitive to the people around us whom we interact with every day. For those who are struggling or on the road to recovery, know that it is not only about the cure but through a person-centred and strengths-based approach, where we can find healing in a loving community.

Contact REACH Counselling Service at 6801 0730 or [email protected] if you need to speak to a counsellor. Alternatively, you may contact any of the helplines below, based on your needs.

Matthew 19:6 is one of the familiar verses in the Bible. It contains the timeless words of Jesus regarding marriage: “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” A funny version of this was given by someone, “Therefore what God has joined together, let no money separate.”

Marriage demands sacrifices and the giving of oneself to the other. We marry to share good times and bad times with the one we love. The traditional wedding vow, “for richer, for poorer...till death do us part” reminds us of this. We vow to love and be with each other no matter how much provisions we have and do not have at any given time.

It was a humbling sunny Sunday on the 24th of February for 13 couples of GFM. They celebrated this vow by spending time together over a picnic at the Botanic Gardens. Picnic bags loaded with boiled quail eggs, “chocnut”, (a traditional peanut butter and chocolate snack), banana, “pandesal”, (a traditional Filipino bun) and coke reminded us of those simple times that we spent with our loved ones prior to—and even after—marriage. Unlike extravagant dinner dates, it was a valuable and meaningful time spent away from the crowd. The picnic also allowed couples to reminisce their times spent over affordable fare in the traditional “pansiteria” (or hawker centre equivalent in the Philippines).

To add some fun, couples had to mimic various picnic poses, and the couple with the best shots were rewarded with prizes. This was followed by a 2-course lunch and a short movie clip featuring two couples and their story about facing financial struggles when one of them lost their job. One couple

Grace Filipino Ministry

Remembering the Vow, “For Richer or Poorer” By Jeremy Retuta

gave up and their faith waivered. The other kept faithful and committed in their trials through prayers, and in the end reaped a great reward of success.

The movie clip concluded with a short exhortation of Psalms 127 by our Grace Filipino Ministry pastor, Pastor Rosita. She reminded us of 3 “i”s; to let God be “involved” and “in charge” in every situation that you encounter. And as we do these, God will provide His “incentive”, or the blessings that we will be rewarded as we trust Him. These blessings include sustenance, security and safety for the family.

“Build your walls” to protect your relationship and family was the overall, imperative message for every couple. With God as the foundation and love forming the roof and four walls, couples are to commit their relationships to the Lord. Ultimately, it is God who brings wholeness and fullness of joy to each household as we continually seek Him. All glory to our God!

GMGs from Region A had the privilege of hosting delegates from Grace Missions Convention held in January 2019.

(1) On 18 January, a total of 15 members from Serangoon North 1&2 GMG, together with four other GMGs—New Life, Grace Lite, Sengkang and Bishan Charity—hosted three delegates and one interpreter.

After fellowship over a hearty nasi lemak meal and a time of worship, two delegates shared their struggles and joy in the missions field.

Ps V, a young minister, was called to the missions field to reach out to a certain tribal group. These people live deep inside the island, thus Ps V had to travel for days to reach the location for ministry work. When the work became too strenuous, Ps V decided to give up and return home. But the Holy Spirit kept convicting his heart to care for these people who need to know God. After much struggle and prayer, he decided to return to the missions field. Praise God for moving Ps V's heart to be His instrument of blessing to this tribal people.

Ps H then shared his experience of reaching out to the tribe. Three of his co-workers lost their lives while doing the work. He was very discouraged but God wanted him to carry on with the ministry. With the help of the Holy Spirit, he persevered and was able to continue in the ministry until today. He also shared that his ministry was thriving and growing. He gave thanks to God for this.

GMG members were deeply encouraged and ministered by the sharing of the delegates. Regional Leader Simon Goh gave an exhortation from Mark 14:36, “Yet not what I will, but what you will.” This was the prayer Jesus prayed at the Garden of Gethsemane before He went to the Cross.

The 3-letter word ‘but’ is a powerful word when we face troubles, tests and temptations. Even during moments of giving up, like the ones experienced by the delegates, 'but' moments helped them to decide to do God's work despite the difficulties they encountered. In doing so, they could experience God's leading and guidance in their ministry and eventually learnt that God is faithful and trustworthy.

As the event drew to a close, GMG members formed three circles surrounding each delegate and prayed for their needs and the Holy Spirit's empowerment for their ministries. May the Lord continue do a great and mighty work among this tribal people through Ps V and Ps H.

Romans 10:14-15 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

(2) On 18 January, Upper Changi GMG with 13 members hosted two delegates and one interpreter.

Sister M bravely shared about Jesus in the mosques whenever there was an opportunity, even though persecutions abound. She is not at all deterred, and in fact wants many people in her home country to be saved. When she shared with us her helpless sense of unknown directions and fears, the members knew this is reality staring at her face squarely. In our hearts, as we listened, we immediately knew that she depends on God daily, and on His faithfulness and protection. Despite all these challenges, Sister M persevered. God sees and knows her heart. Since then, other believers have joined her in this incredible faith journey. When God is the driver, He handles the terrain. We need to strap on the seat belt of faith. We prayed vigorously for her work and her faith to increase. Prayers with tears flowed freely as we sought God for strength. Hearts are once again reinvigorated to pump and beat for Jesus. Hallelujah!

Ps E pastors a growing home church that began with four families and now has many new members. Besides managing a chicken farm, he conducts

home visits, cell meetings, Sunday school, and even teach the youth to play musical instruments. With growing needs in the community, more resources and space is required. We prayed with him for God to meet these needs as Ps E continues to avail his life to serve with no conditions attached. We are humbled by our comfortable environment, and pray that God will use us to do more.

The whole GMG is truly encouraged by these testimonies of God’s faithfulness, and how the pastors and sisters are willing to give up their all for our Almighty God. As they honoured God, we believe God will protect and honour them through their works and message of faith.

Christy is a Gracian who has served as a campus social worker and life coach to NGO workers in the Middle East for six years. She is a mother of two young children.

Last month, we meditated on Lent in this space. This month is supposed to be the holy month for us as Christians. Or at least, the week of Good Friday and Easter Sunday is supposed to be a holy week. Muslims celebrate their holy month by fasting for an entire month, memorising and reciting their scriptures, giving alms, going on a holy pilgrimage, and praying for their sins to be forgiven in paradise.

How are we, as people of God, preparing our hearts for a spiritual encounter with our risen Lord?

I am going on a holy pilgrimage. By the time you read this, I will be in the midst of leading a team of people from different churches and various walks of life to two countries in the Middle East. It’s a Holy Land trip with a difference. Unlike other pilgrimages, this will be a vision trip. Not for self-edification but to come alongside the suffering but triumphant church.

MISSIONS TRIPS? BE THOU MY VISIONBy Christy Chew

The trip prepares leaders by recruiting people who are seriously and prayerfully considering uprooting and living in the Middle East to join the Lord in His work for the long term or several years. Trippers will not be in a hurry to deliver a programme or activity. But will intentionally slow down to listen to what the Lord is saying to them. And they do this by meditating about the death and resurrection of the Lord during Lent leading up to the trip. They resist the temptation to deliver programmes. Instead, they will focus on befriending the local believers and servants of the Lord, who Himself lived among the people and loved them. The trippers understand that most of the work will be done after the trip—when they share their experiences and insights to propel people towards a deeper understanding of what the church is and joining in the work of God in the nations.

I look forward to the sharing with my trippers on 25 May when we return from our holy pilgrimage. Watch this space next month!

There is nothing in life that’s constant. God is the only constant in our lives. And with God holding the world in the palm of our hands, we shall have no fear when change happens to shake up our comfortable positions

I am delighted to declare that so many great things are happening not just in our church but in the nations as well! We hear of full-time workers in East Asia standing strong in the Lord despite persecution. We hear of Indonesians, fresh out of Bible School, going into the interiors of Indonesia to minister. We hear of refugees encountering Jesus through dreams and visions. And while we see the movement of God sweeping through the nations—be it in open countries or closed ones—His true gospel will never fail to transform lives. So, how can we, as a missional family church, take part in the awesome plans that God is carrying out in the nations?

As many of you have realised, globalisation has put the church in a wonderful position for the sharing of the gospel. As I thought about how our predecessors had to travel by foot and across seas just so an unreached people group could know about what Jesus Christ has done for the world, I laugh sheepishly at the thought that things are probably so much more advantageous to us now!

Embarking on local missionsThe nations are on our land! Bangladeshis, mainland Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans…don’t be surprised to hear that there are even Syrians in our midst. While the harvest is plentiful here in Singapore, Grace Missions have caught on what the Lord is doing and, of course, planning towards participating in this movement.

Imagine being uprooted from your home country and being planted in a place with a different culture where people speak a different language. I would feel helpless, lost and incapable most of the time. Similarly, migrant workers face a lot of pressure having to adapt to our culture while living under social stigma from the locals. On top of that, they also face financial, workplace and family pressures.

To support these migrant workers in Singapore, Grace Missions is working with a non-profit organisation to provide physiotherapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) care. The main aim of the outreach is to share the love of Christ in a holistic manner with these workers, and meet their needs physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

After all, Jesus did not just preach the Word, He fed the five thousand. Hence, it is the desire of the organisers for the workers here to come to know Jesus through practical acts of love.

The workers we are reaching out to are mainly those who are prone to chronic pains and aches due to the nature of their work at construction sites and also those who suffer from bodily injuries.

Grace missions has helped the start-up cost of this initiative and we will be recruiting, training and equipping Gracians to be a part of this outreach effort.

Moving forward, we hope to garner the help of volunteers to engage the migrant workers more meaningfully by providing long-term services such as English classes and computer classes. We are also looking into the possibility of conducting cross-cultural exchanges in music, dance as well as art. The healing room ministry would also be looking forward to conduct healing services for them.

At the end of the day, as we garner help in the above areas, we want to remember that we are signing up not because we are saviours. But we are to simply be a vessel of the Lord to bring His love and light to those who do not have Jesus; to humble ourselves and meet them where they, and not to think of ourselves any more highly than them. For the Apostle Paul puts it nicely in 1 Corinthians 9:20:

“To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”

So, if you’re interested to sign up as a volunteer, you can visit the church website or email [email protected]

Missions Summit 2019On 12th and 13th March 2019, everyone involved in Grace Missions, including country directors, grace missions committee members and grace missions staff, gathered for a two-day summit to discuss the future plans of missions in our church.

During the meeting, we defined church planting and how we should focus on the depth of our church planting works. We also discussed the importance of discipling our church planters holistically.

It was a very productive time of discussion and as we closed in prayer, we prayed that God would raise up the younger generation to continue to do the work of missions.

Strong partnership with MyanmarLast month, Senior Pastor Calvin Lee was invited to Evangel Bible College in Yangon, Myanmar to preach at the 26th graduation ceremony for a batch of 17 graduating students. Evangel Bible College has 80 bible college students who are training to be future pastors, missionaries and ministers. Our partners in Myanmar are glad and encouraged to be in partnership with Grace Missions to bring the gospel in their own nation where hearts are soft and open.

We are living in exciting times! Shall we, as a church in Singapore, take part in walking in the will of God’s global redemptive plans? If you’d like to know how to be involved in missions, feel free to email us at [email protected] or drop by the missions corner to borrow some missions-related books for a start!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!

> Volunteers to serve in registration, operations or as clinical assistants> Befrienders to build relationships with the migrant workers

We also need people who are willing to commit long-term in the following:- People with counselling skills - People with nursing skills - People who can conduct English classes, computer classes, etc.- People willing to organise cultural exchanges through music, dance

and art

1. A group of volunteers gathering for a briefing before moving out.

2. Our first-time volunteer, Jason, conversing with a migrant worker. He is exploring opportunities to be involved in reaching out to migrant workers in Singapore.

3. Gracians engaging in conversations with migrant workers, while they are waiting for their turn to seek treatment.

4. Raymond conducting simple consultation checks and taking of blood pressure.

"Geri Ngo" has been a Christian for nine years. She joined Grace Assembly of God five years ago and is now serving in the YAYP ministry. She has a heart for the nations and joined the DTS programme with YWAM, doing her outreach in East Asia as well as in North Korea.

I recently spent seven weeks in East Asia. During this time, the Lord taught me a few lessons:• He really is sovereign and holds the whole world in the palm of His

hands.• Nothing can stop the Gospel from going forward.• Our role is simply to abide in Him and remain obedient.

As my team and I were preparing for the trip, news of increased surveillance and persecution, coupled with stories of long-term workers who had to leave the field, really challenged me. The security briefing, meant to better prepare us for the trip, caused more fear to arise in my heart. We were advised to pray with our eyes open, to be watchful of our surroundings, and to be careful with text messages. As we were spending an extended period of time there and had no concrete plans or programmes, I wondered what we would do there and how exactly we were going to make any impact for His Kingdom.

We went there holding on to general groups of people whom we felt the Holy Spirit was speaking to us about (missionaries and young women), and our team saw how God masterfully filled up our schedules throughout the weeks. God really knew how to best use each individual. One member has an interest in technology and was from an engineering background. So he used his skills in robotics, drama and film (even using a green screen!) to teach English in a learning centre we were serving in. Another loves cooking, and we had our own ‘cooking ministry’ where we invited pre-believers and new believers for fellowship over Singaporean food. She also helped out at a restaurant run by long-term workers. For myself, having the opportunity to work closely with a social worker to serve a family in poverty was completely unexpected.

We also spent a lot of time with the long-term workers, praying and having fellowship with them. Many of them have been doing His work there for long stretches of time, ranging from five to 20 years. It humbled me to find out that they were encouraged simply because God had led a team to where they were, despite the harsh winter conditions and current, unfavourable

political climate. Even though we had no clue about the details of the trip prior to departure, God was there before us, paving the way and arranging who exactly we would meet and work with. He can—and will—use available lives that are in tune with the Holy Spirit.

God divinely orchestrated meetings with two young women on different occasions. One of them had never been exposed to the concept of God, and the other was slowly being exposed to the Gospel through the efforts of long-term missionaries. It was amazing to see God’s hand in each of these meetings. I knew nothing about them, yet God led us to meet and connect with them so that we could share our stories with each another, as well as the similarities in our family backgrounds and experiences. I had the chance to share my testimony and journey with Him, both times in coffee shops! In those moments, I believe it was the Holy Spirit who gave me the assurance to share. On my own, I am too fearful, too cautious, and my grasp of the language too weak. I knew nothing about their struggles. I was worried about how I was going to share the good news in this nation, but also learnt that no authority can stop God. We just have to be obedient in following His prompting.

At the end of the trip, I was reminded of what a church missionary once said: Nothing can stop the gospel from going forward. Hearing news of closed doors or increased pressure can be discouraging, but our God who made the heavens and the earth is still in control of it all.

Let’s continue to abide in Him so we can remain sensitive to His voice and leading wherever we are, be it at home in Singapore, or in another nation. Let’s also take time to keep the long-term workers and local believers in prayer.

“Nothing that men can do can stop the progress and ultimate victory of the gospel.” ~HOWARD MARSHALL
