Knowing that personal perspectives on issues like these are often cultivated through the eyes of faith, NJTV sought to create a neutral platform for fruitful headline discussions that resonate with varying perspectives. A Matter of Faith with a Bishop, an Imam and a Rabbi will offer this platform, giving viewers a seat at the table with Bishop Mark Beckwith (Episcopal Diocese of Newark), Imam W. NJDOCS: ONLY A NUMBER

Bridging the Divide with Faith

Steve Besserman is a New Jersey filmmaker; his parents are both Holocaust survivors. Several years before she was stricken with dementia, his mother Aranka began to write memories of her experience in a concentration camp, including how she met and fell in love with her husband-to-be through a barbed-wire fence. In Only A Number, Besserman weaves his mother’s diaries together with his own modern-day journey to the ghettos and camps of which she wrote. NJDocs is a showcase for the best student and professional filmmakers who illustrate what is important, poignant, and perhaps under-discovered through the art of documentary film.

Every day the news is filled with local and national stories that raise emotional reactions and resonate within our country’s religious communities–from unrest in the Middle East and gay marriage to Planned Parenthood, gun control and surveillance of houses of worship. Such topics flare opinions and passions, and conjure heated conversations across living rooms, offices and boardrooms.

Knowing that personal perspectives on issues like these are often cultivated through the eyes of faith, NJTV sought to create a neutral platform for fruitful headline discussions that resonate with varying perspectives. A Matter of Faith with a Bishop, an Imam and a Rabbi will offer this platform, giving viewers a seat at the table with Bishop Mark Beckwith (Episcopal Diocese of Newark),

Imam W. Deen Shareef (Masjid Waarith ud Deen in Irvington) and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz (Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills) as they vigorously discuss and debate many of these issues. Though not always in agree-ment, they will discuss tough issues civilly, respectfully, faithfully, and, when appropriate, with a sense of humor. Bishop Beckwith, Rabbi Gewirtz and Imam Shareef are all committed to serving the spiritual, social and economic needs of their communities and have worked together for years—building bridges in New Jersey between their faiths and followers. They co-founded the Newark Coalition for Hope and Peace in 2008 in response to gang violence in Newark. The three men have appeared on PBS specials with Jon Meacham, God in New York and Christians, Muslims and Jews: Bridging the Divide, and they have also been regular guests on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. The Retropolitan profiles jazz musician/singer Brian Newman. This successful New York City jazz man has played with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, but retreats home to Brooklyn at the end of every gig to his wife, famous burlesque performer Angie Pontani and their baby girl Sistilia. The Newmans are living a genuine retro-metro life that has to be seen to be appreciated.

Ben Brantley of The New York Times calls Oslo “the stuff of crackling theater.” Now, this sweeping and surprisingly funny new play comes to Broadway following its sold-out, Off-Broadway run, featuring Jennifer Ehle, Jefferson Mays and the rest of its critically acclaimed, original cast. Oslo is inspired by the true story of the back-channel talks, unlikely friendships and quiet heroics that led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords between the Israelis and Palestinians. With an additional donation, enjoy a pair of tickets on MAY 2 OR MAY 21, plus a post-show talk with the cast. For a list of upcoming NJTV events, visit njtvonline.org/ticketbooth or call 1.855.215.6588.
