The Emerald RSL opening of Anzac Walk was a fabulous event and one we were pleased to support. Here we see many of those present dressed in period costume and awaiting the arrival of the Governor General on Puffing Billy. Stephen Hands 1916 Morris created a lot of inter-est, particularly as it was carrying an unexploded World War One sea mine. We assume it had been rendered safe, although one on-looker was clearly sceptical!

Our Saturday morning Breakfast outings are always a relaxed affair and the February one at Doncaster was no exception. Frank Pound has consistently run these for many years now and they are a great way to get out and about for an informal run. The last one for the season will be April 18 at Surrey Park.

My thanks go to Paul Daley for taking the chair at the March committee meeting and Natter Night during my absence. Andrew McDougall ably led a presentation and discussion about veteran motorcycles at Natter Night and by all reports it created a lot of interest. The same can be said for last month’s Brass Notes with our special motorcycle feature. Brass Notes has been hugely supported over the last year or so and it shows with the quality we now enjoy. Note the outstanding article on a rare make, the Stoewer provided by John Stanley in this issue. Thank you to all who have contributed so enthusiastically, and please do keep the articles coming. We have a number of articles up our sleeve but if you have not contributed so far, or have been asked to contribute and are yet to do so, it would be great to receive your input soon as we need to keep the pipeline full. Like all aspects of the club, Brass Notes is only as good as the individual members makes it.

The 60th and apparently final Kalorama rally was held last week, and was well supported – please see the report within this issue. It will be interesting to see if this almost iconic day can be re-invented in some other way in the future.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Adams, a well known and popular member of the New South Wales club. Peter had a very large collection of veteran cars including the record breaking 1914

President’s MessageVauxhall “50 Bob” and as was reported by the ABC (see report in this issue) a commemorative re-enactment of the Melbourne to Sydney was run in March. Latest news is that the trip was halted when the car had a break-down but we do not know the details. Hopefully we can be kept informed.

Please note that our April Natter Night will feature a “meet the member” evening with Ralph Provan who was there at the very beginning of the club, and he will outline his experiences with old cars, the club and what it has been like through the various changes over 60 years. In addition, don’t forget to diarise the May Natter Night as we will be making this one a special one incorporating a Presentation of Awards evening, an exceptional speaker, and pre-meeting drinks will also be served! This will be a great evening for all.

Our National One & Two Rally is nearly upon us and Kevin Quigley and the sub-committee have been working overtime in getting the final details together. With an entry list of 75 this is sure to be a very special event and will once again as a National Rally show-case our club within the veteran movement. I look forward to seeing you there!

See you at in the La Trobe Valley!

Ian Berg, President VCCA (Victoria)

MARCH ISSUEWe have had reports from a small number of members that they did not receive the postal delivery of Brass Notes in March. In each case we have verified that all were on the mailing list, and that to the extent we can confirm the copies were delivered to the post office. This suggests that the problem was to do with the postal service. As most would know Australia Post has changed their pricing and delivery service, including slower deliveries effective January 1. It may be that there are teething problems with the changes, or that the March problems are just an isolated case.

We do use a bulk rate for posting Brass Notes and our printer, Curry printing has an excellent working relationship with the local post office. Unfortunately however we should expect the postal service to be slower than it has been in the past. Note that a handful of additional copies of Brass Notes are produced, so if you definitely have not received Brass Notes, then by arrangement an additional copy may be obtained. However please do also enquire of your local postal office to investigate if there are any problems with the local service.

With respect to the email version, the email link enables a download of Brass Notes. This email and the link is double checked before it is issued. If you are having problems with the download then it would be best to on-forward it to another email address, possibly that of a friend or relative, and request they download it. This is an easy way to check if the problem is with your computer, phone or tablet. I hope this helps!

Ian Berg.

Alan Meredith advises that the photo of the early veteran radiator in our last issue carried no obvious clues as to its identity. The eleven rows of square finned horizontal tubes are a little unusual while the absence of a header tank and filler indicates that the vehicle it was fitted to would possibly have had a separate water tank sitting under the bonnet behind the engine. This shape and style of radiator is indicative of the 1903/6 period when one piece bonnets which overlapped the radiator found some favour. The conclusion however is that it is likely to have been from a 1904 6.5hp Beeston Royal Humberette. The radiator has highly distinctive 11 rows of square finned tubes and the frame has the same bolting arrangement running through it. Eleven rows of tubes are most unusual in radiators of this type eight or sometimes nine rows being the maximum usually encountered – even the near identical Coventry Humberette only had 6 rows!

To the End of the Road! 7th – 14th February 2016

The Peter Waddle Memorial Veteran Run is an annual event held by the Veteran Car Club of Tasmania, usually over a weekend in February. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the VCCA of Tasmania, this year’s event was turned into a week long tour that traversed the state from the far north-west to the far south-east literally “to the end of the road”. 26 cars took part in this unique event and the entrants came from Tasmania, Victoria, N.S.W., Queensland, South Australia, United Kingdom and the U.S.A.

The official start was at Woolnorth under the Bluff Point Wind Farm that overlooks the meeting of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean – a very impressive starting point. The Club Patron Mrs Judy McDougall flagged off all the cars. This was very fitting as her father Gordon Fysh was one of the founders of the club 60 years ago. Andrew & I were in the 1913 Siddeley Deasy, which was Gordon’s car and so, has been used in club events over the past 60 years. The Wind Farm is located in a great spot as we were nearly blown off our feet - the Roaring 40’s were living up to their name.

So began the adventure which was to see a week of excellent veteran motoring, good company, great food, wonderful organization and perfect weather – blue skies and sunshine. The scenery was stunning especially when experienced from the speed of an open veteran car. The members of the VCCA(Vic) who attend the Tour

were Michael & Claudia Holding 1905 Cadillac, Greg Smith 1913 T Ford Raceabout, Peter & Judy Fitzgerald 1910 Maxwell Q2 Tourer and Andrew & Frances McDougall 1913 Siddeley Deasy.

The Tour took us across the northern coast from the far west through Stanley, Wynyard, Ulverstone and Devonport before the cars and their drivers left Deloraine and heading south for the long climb up Quamby Bluff, then through the hairpins to the highest point on the Lake Highway at 1210m and onto the Central Plateau and Great Lake. Great Lake is a renowned trout fishing area and was created by three dams (each one higher than the previous one) to provide water for the Hydro-Electric Power Stations and we had a visit to the old Waddamana Power Station which gave us a glimpse into what life was like in the early part of the 20th century for the power station workers and their families in this isolated place.

The next day took us across the Central Plateau – a wide open windswept plain that was used as summer grazing by the sheep and cattle farmers from the properties lower down. This lifestyle was well displayed at The Steppes Hall where a delicious morning tea was waiting for us. The next stop was at the old town of Bothwell – site of the oldest golf club in the southern hemisphere and the oldest (1821) water-powered flour mill on the property Nant. It is now used to grind the barley for the Nant Whisky Distillery. A few of the entrants stopped to sample the whisky.

Then it was onto New Norfolk beside the Derwent River for the night. The following day saw us heading for

Hobart, then south to Huonville and Port Huon. It was here that the tour ended for the 1905 Cadillac with a broken crankshaft, also the 1912 Renault of our English entrants had a problem with a leaking water jacket and a noise in the differential. Disappointing for the entrants not to be able to complete the tour.

So onto the last day and the challenging trip down the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, with superb views over the coastline to Dover before heading to Ida Bay and the start of the gravel road into Cockle Creek and “the end of the road”. This road was very rough in some sections but all cars made it to the end and a great sense of achievement was felt by all entrants. Our English entrants celebrated by going for a swim, amidst comments of “mad dogs & Englishmen”.

On Saturday a rather weary but jubilant group made its way to Hobart for a display on the lawns of Parliament House where there was keen interest in the vehicles especially when the 1912 Crossley had a tyre explode and then to have its owner John Handley change it using the original tools.

A couple of special mentions for the efforts by Tasmanian entrants Peter Ford 1913 Hillman, who at 88 was the oldest entrant followed closely by George Prest 87 in the 1917 Overland. The Peter Waddle Memorial Trophy was awarded to Julian & Jane McNeil in the 1906 Swift 9/10 RE Tonneau. The Hard Luck Trophy

went to Alan & Mary Travis, our USA entrants, whose 1909 Delage Model R Voiturette failed to make the start after breaking down in NSW en route to Tasmania, having been brought back to Brisbane from the USA, where it had competed in motoring events in the early part of the 20th Century.

This was a fantastic tour, a unique experience and a wonderful way to celebrate 60 Years of the VCCA (Tas). It is one of the best Veteran Car Tours that we have attended. Our thanks go to the organisers of the Tour for making it such a great week. This is what veteran motoring is all about – enjoying our cars, good comradeship and great company.

Some statistics from the Tour

• 22 cars did the whole rally • 2 cars did the northern section • 2 cars did the southern section • 19 cars made it all the way to Cockle Creek • 5 cars had mechanical problems and didn’t make it to the finish • 7 Model T Fords • 3 Overlands • 2 Studebakers • 2 Cadillacs • rest only one of different makes • Cars ranged in age from 1905 to 1918

A Tribute to Germany’s Third Car Manufacturer

Nestled in the picturesque Kiewa Valley at the foot of Mt Bogong is where I have chosen to locate my collection of five Stoewer cars, historic company photographs and other memorabilia from this now lost marque (Photo 1). Over the last 50 years I have become close friends of the Stoewer descendants and the pioneering contribution of this family to the automobile industry deserves recognition. Visitors are welcome!

Stoewer brothers Emil (aged 23) and Bernhard (aged 21) formed a Company in 1896 for the purpose of manufacturing motor cars. Their Company, “Gebruder Stoewer” was just the third in Germany to manufacture motor cars following Daimler and Benz. From the outset, these brothers were inventive and pioneered innovation in the automotive industry. Although commencing with petrol engines, by 1904 they were considered the leaders in luxury electric vehicles. But in 1906 they introduced a 6 cylinder, petrol engine and in the same year were contracted to supply 200 double-decker buses to the county of London. In 1931 they built the first front wheel drive car in Germany and in 1935 built a four wheel drive, four wheel steering, light, general purpose vehicle for military use (7 years before the US Jeep). The company did not survive beyond WWII after the invading Russian army confiscated all equipment from the factory in the Pomeranian city of Stettin and the German State of Pomerania was handed to Poland.

My first find, a 1923 Model D3A in a stable at Minyip.

9

When at high school during the early 1960’s a highlight of the year was the annual Mt Kalorama rally organised by the vintage car clubs in Victoria. I decided I wanted to restore a vintage car, but it had to be a “good one”. During my first summer vacation from university in 1966 I gained employment with the Victoria Mines Department. They very kindly assigned me the task of sampling bore water on farms across the State. This meant collecting a pint of bore water, having a cup of tea and slice of fruit cake with the farmer and his wife while information was collected about the water bore and then having a look in the farm shed on the way out! I spotted many, desirable unrestored old cars. But it was in a 36 horse stable on a wheat farm in Minyip that I spotted what I wanted. It was a 1923, 4-cylinder, 2.2 litre Stoewer model D3A (Photo 2). I had seen Max Bacon’s smaller model D3 at Kalorama and so recognised the marque and soon became just the car’s second owner.

Within just a few weeks of acquiring my D3A I received a letter smuggled out of communist East Berlin. This fellow wrote “I have heard that you have discovered a Stoewer car in Australia, can you please photograph everything you can see of this car and send them to this address in West Germany?” We thus established communication although our letters often got severely censored when intercepted by the STASI. I soon

learned that my D3A was the only survivor of this model, I was given the name and address of everyone else in Australia who had a Stoewer car (and I have since found only two cars that he did not know about) and he was able to introduce me to Jürgen Stoewer the son of Bernhard and in turn Jutta Barckmann, Bernhards granddaughter. I had now acquired the Stoewer Disease! Jürgen later gave me the negatives of all the photos he had been able to salvage from

the factory after WWII and these works photos now contribute significantly to my display in tribute to this pioneering automotive family.

In 1967 I wrote to the other Stoewer owners in Australia to share information and usually got a response. But in one case a reply did not come until 1983: “sorry to have been so long in replying, my car is now at the Gold Coast in pieces, do you want it?” (Photo 4). How could I refuse? This car was a 6-cylinder, 3.2 litre Model D5 from 1922 and I have since learned that it also is the sole survivor of its model in now restored and driveable condition (Photo 5). In 1992 the owner of a 1924, sole surviving 6-cylinder, 3.4 litre Model D5/78 (the high performance version of the D5) passed away and his wife was happy to see the car stay in Australia. Although driveable at the time of acquisition, this car has now been fully restored to original specification (Photos 6 and 7). Another contact I made was with Alan Rose-Bray, a founder of the Veteran Car Club on NSW. Alan had the sole survivor of a 1911, 4-cylinder, 1.6 litre Model B1 in unrestored condition. It had broken an axle and the diff parts were all wrapped in newspaper dated 1961. Alan passed away leaving the car to his brother Doug who did nothing with it. It stayed in a garage in Marrickville untouched for 45 years until Doug in turn passed on in 2005. The executor of Doug’s estate contacted me and was happy that I was interested in restoring the car (Photos 8 and 9). I have since tried to identify the original owner of this car and can narrow the options down to two. Just two cars of this model were registered in NSW within a four month period centred upon the probable delivery date in Australia. One was owned by Joshua Cox of “The Commercial Hotel, Yass”. Not much chance of tracing his descendants. The other was owned by Mary Mc Lauren of Germantown (now Holbrook). And yes, Mc Laurens are still in the district and can remember “Aunt Mary and her old car – she never married and never drove the car herself: she had a gentleman friend ….”

The final Stoewer in my collection is a 1913, 4-cylinder Model C1. This car has four siblings, one of which is in Tasmania. My C1 was obtained fully restored from the estate of Reg Macdonald in Adelaide. Reg believed this car came from Penola. I have since found records indicating only one Stoewer car of this model was registered in SA. It was owned by De Garis & Sons, Stock and Station Agents, Penola! And yes, a phone call confirmed they are still in business and I spoke to the grandson of the original owner.

As with the other Stoewer cars in my collection, I have endeavoured to have restoration done in a way that retains originality as close as is possible. I have been very fortunate to have had the services of a back yard genius in Greg Doyle of Armidale, NSW. The standard of originality preserved in Greg’s restoration work is truly a credit to his diligence and skill. And, Greg provided a photo of everything he did, thus preserving a detailed record of each cars originality and authenticity.

‘Queensland’s Motoring Dawn’ Richard McDonough

Few books covering the topic of Veteran motoring have been published in recent years. The release of a new high quality publication which specifically covers the subject of early motoring in Queensland is therefore no small cause for celebration.

‘Queensland’s Motoring Dawn’, by Rick McDonough, is the culmination of some sixteen years’ meticulous research into the evolution of motoring in the northern State. Even though this book is Queensland specific, if you were to substitute the locations mentioned therein, the stories it tells could apply to any part of Australia. Writing the book has clearly been a labour of love. The scope and depth of research undertaken by the author is impressive to say the least and the end result has provided us with an ultimate reference guide on the subject.

As the title suggest, Rick’s book traces the evolution of Queensland’s motoring heritage from its very beginnings in the late 1800’s. It continues into the early 1900’s with each chapter being devoted to one of the first ten years. The content cut off ends at 1909 so the period covered is what many of us would regard as being the most interesting in motoring history.

The soft bound book is printed in portrait format on quality paper. It is profusely illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs and is an essential addition to the library of any Australian motoring historian. The fact that sales have already topped five hundred copies in just a few short weeks speaks for itself. Copies are available at $35 each direct from the author. Domestic postage and packaging, if required, is $15. The same fee will also cover the despatch of up to three copies if need be.

Orders should be placed with: Rick McDonough, 25 Hurtle Ave. Bonython, 2905, ACT. Ph 02 6293 1553 (AH), email – [email protected]

The March Natter Night featured Andrew and Frances McDougall, Alan Lethborg, Kim Coillet, Greg Smith and Chris Knoop speaking on their many years of Veteran Motorcycling. Hosted by Andrew, each speaker entertained the meeting with their stories of the challenges and fun which they have had over the years with their Veteran Motorbikes.

The evening was oppressively hot being over 35 degrees, however there was a good turn out and the meeting was chaired by Vice President Paul Daley.

It appears this wonderful event has been terminated by a recent Council decision. It seems that even the 60th event itself only proceeded as a result of last minute negotiations by the organisers. Needless to say this has come as a shock to many of us who have enjoyed the event for many years. The event has regularly supported the local CFA who have displays of their fire fighting equipment present and man the gates to support it. The RACV also supports the event.

I understand there is to be a move to have the Council review their decision.

Let’s hope that the 60th anniversary Kalorama Rally won’t be the last.

The 60th anniversary was held on the 20th March 2016 with what appeared one of the largest numbers of cars seen at the event. Hosted by the Vintage Drivers Club this rally was originally established in 1965 by a group of ‘like-minded’ clubs and grew to be a combined club event with a very strong following. Through the 1970’s and 1980’s it was officially on the calendar of, and actively supported by, many clubs including the Alvis, Bentley, Riley, Rolls Royce, Vintage Sports Car Club, Vintage Drivers Club and Pre-War MG register. But it also attracted support from many more one-make clubs which either entered or attended as visitors often parking on the hill overlooking the oval.

In its heyday the event included gymkhana events such as slalom and lance competitions, acceleration and braking, slow races and an interesting cloverleaf test. Public liability issues and insurance caused a change in character in later years and it became more of a static display day. Nevertheless the event continued to be very popular and was always a great chance to catch up with old friends and see a wonderful display of collector cars in a picnic like atmosphere.

Members of the VCCV also attended but usually in their vehicles from other eras. Occasionally veteran cars were present. A memorable example I recall was when the late Bob Chamberlin did display laps in his powerful 1904 L48 Napier ‘Samson’ raising clouds of dust. In recent years the VCCV began to attend as a club in small numbers.

This year we had several veteran cars at Kalorama including Paul Daley and John Prior in Paul’s Overland, the Staples in their Ford T, the Dillons in their Minerva, the Hands/Fleming Morris (complete again with mine!) and I saw at least one other veteran depart before I could identify it. A number of our members including myself also attended in later era cars.

A 102-year-old race car is being driven from Melbourne to Sydney, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its original record-breaking trip.

On March 18, 1916 car dealer Boyd Edkins drove the Vauxhall race car, known as 50 Bob, from Melbourne to Sydney in less than 17 hours. The trip smashed the previous record of 19 hours and seven minutes, and marked the first time a car had made the trip faster than a train.

“Australia was really impassioned about city-to-city records,” president of the Vintage Sports Car Club of Australia Tim Shellshear said.

“It was too much of a temptation for Boyd Edkins, who went out to break that record, and did so in 16 hours and 55 minutes.

One of the key things is he beat the Melbourne to Sydney express train by five minutes, and that’s the first time a car had ever beaten a train between cities.

It showed that there was a potential there that people hadn’t thought about before.”

Edkins’ journey marked an important milestone, and opened many people’s minds to the possibilities of road travel.

Journey recreated 100 years on

One century on, 50 Bob has been restored, and is again making the journey, albeit on smoother roads.

“It was 558 miles in the old terms,” said Mr Shellshear, who is the first of four drivers in the re-enactment run.

“But of that 558 there was probably only about 150 that you could call good roads, that may have had bitumen.

Much of it was literally driving on dirt tracks, and there were farm gates and creek crossings and it was very rough, and really quite dangerous.”

The group left the GPO building in Melbourne at 5:00am on Friday, and will make stops at Albury, Bookham, Goulburn and Breadalbane, where Edkins’ ashes were scattered.

They plan on matching his time of 16 hours and 55 minutes.

“Our intention is to be outside the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney at 9:55pm,” Mr Shellshear said.

“Boyd Edkins ... went from GPO to GPO, but Sydney is going through a lot of construction at the moment.

George Street is closed off, and we decided it was just all too hard ... So we’re going to the Art Gallery, which is about the same distance.”

While the trek is being undertaken to honour Edkins’ achievement, it also holds special personal significance.

The car’s owner for the past 15 years, Peter Adams, died last weekend, and his family are supporting the drivers.

For the final haul into Sydney the car will be joined by a convoy of other vintage Vauxhalls.

LETTER TO THE EDITORIn response to John Cox’s excellent article on Veteran Motorcycling and how we had 14 of entries being motorcycles, he asked if someone could identify some of the owners of these bikes that were entered in the 1967 Warburton Annual Rally. I think I can help out with most, and it is also interesting that some are still in the same ownership.

008 Griffin Zedal 1902 Percy Hosking. Still in the Hosking family

046 Douglas 1913 Ian Marchant. I believe still in the family

048 Triumph 1914 Graeme Splatt. Still in the same ownership

056 Triumph 1912 Neil Kirk. Now owned by Barry Forryan

058 Triumph 1914 Bryants or Cooks ?

078 Harley Outfit 1917 Spencer Sheffield. Still in same ownership

091 Scott 1912 R Walter

094 EWB 1914 Graeme Splatt. Still in the same ownership

097 Minerva 1904 Barry Forryan

127 Douglas 1913 Possibly Terry Parker??

DK 730 Indian 1916 Jim Goble

Triumph 1911 Ken Hall

Triumph 1914 Bryants or Cooks?

James 1914 D Provan (David’s father)

I reckon there was also Jack Nelson riding the 1909 Minerva also on this rally as I have seen him in the VCCA rally film the club has from 1967.

I would love to see a bit of a revival of more motorcycles on our major rallies, but they are a bit of a handful in traffic if you are riding a direct fixed drive machine, so the event has to cater for this to increase the participation numbers. I can still picture in the “old days” motorcycles with these fixed drives circling through service stations to keep the bikes mobile while traffic lights changed to green.

These veteran machines are a big part of our club, so I for one would like to see runs that cater for this type of vehicle.

Regards, Greg Smith

Whilst scrounging through copious amounts of unwanted treasure at the Yarra Glen swap meet

recently Maggie, found an RACV 75th Anniversary edition of Royalauto December 1978

Enclosed we found an article about an FN that I feel may be of some interest.

Being the proud owners of an FN ourselves we felt compelled to share this information with anyone who may be interested.

Article of InterestFrom Stan Bone

The photograph reproduced here is of a truly historic nature.

It shows the first motor car ever to tour Tasmania and is believed to be an early model FN - possibly 1908.

It is pictured in front of the convict church at Port Arthur with its driver, passengers and the inevitable, inquisitive, onlookers.

The driver of the car is Charles Kellow, his front seat passenger is Syd Day, who were both original members of the RACV. The local postmaster is in the rear of the vehicle to the right and to the left is Mr W. P. Hurst, father of Mr W. Hurst of Kew, from whom the original photograph has been borrowed. A group of locals are standing close by, not to miss the opportunity of being photographed - or perhaps they gathered through genuine curiosity at the rare sight?

The spare tyre, which can be seen reclining in the back passenger compartment, apparently has a puncture and the front tyre in the photograph is held together with string - a method of running repair which could not be so easily effected today. The car had candle headlamps and kerosene side lamps.

The vehicle ran out of petrol in Tasmania and was left, never to be returned to the mainland.

Featured in photograph facing camera is Charles Kellow, of Kellow Falkiner automobile agents Melbourne

BRUSH RALLY 2016First ever Brush National Rally – Making history in Wedderburn, Victoria!

Rally Coordinators - Andrew and Frances McDougall

The rally headquarters will be at the Wedderburn Motel with most entrants arriving on the Sunday afternoon after having participated in the National Single and Twin Rally.

We are grateful the services of Greg Smith, acting as tail end Charlie for this event.

Planned routes take us on good sealed, quiet roads which are ideal for Brush.

I know it will be a very successful and enjoyable first ever Brush Rally, thanks to the sound preparations of our Rally Coordinators. What is so fantastic about this event is that our goal was to have 14 Brush cars take part (one more than the 13 vehicles that gathered together in the USA for the Centenary of the Brush Marque). We believe there to be approx. 23 Brushes in Australia and almost all of these will be taking part! So the Brush car marque that made history as the first car to cross Australia from west to east will again make history in the small country town of Wedderburn when we gather for the first time and field possibly the largest gathering of Brushes in the world!

LETTER TO THE EDITORIt was noted that in the March issue of Brass Notes that a “Mr Ferkesterker” was given a financial breakdown as to why he should join the VCCA. This is on the surface may seem plausible but on reflection should not be considered of any value whether you are looking to attract members or to increase the fees of the VCCA.

Safety Checks are carried out by a group of volunteers who are proud to support the VCCA and should be commended for their effort.

Registration savings have nothing to do with the VCCA as it is implemented by Vic Roads. Therefore cannot be used as an argument to join the VCCA over any other Car Club. The Club Permit Scheme is pro-rata permit for the days of usage, either a 45 day or 90 days. Many Clubs throughout Victoria are signatures to the Club Permit Scheme. Therefore it is not necessarily an argument to join the VCCA over other Car Clubs that would accept the “Whatchamacallit”.

Rally subsidies are quite a valid point and should be considered as an attraction for prospective Club Members. It does mean that if subsides were not able to be obtained then some Rallies may be more expensive and out of range for some members to attend.

Natter Night Suppers should be, and are, subsidised by the sale of raffle tickets on the night.

Brass Notes publication at $55.00 per year per member is by far the most expensive outlay for the VCCA and any other Car Club that produces its own Newsletters.

With the proposal to increase the fees of the VCCA from $70.00 to $80.00 then it seems very obvious that the most beneficial way of reducing costs to avoid a fee rise then, is to reduce the cost of the Newsletter and any other printed material distributed by the VCCA. It is a fact that both printing costs and postage costs will continue to rise in the future so a more economical way to produce and distribute Brass Notes should be examined. If the committee of the VCCA cannot accept this then it is a sad case. As I see it the only way forward is to reduce our reliance on printed material and communicate more with members by electronic means.

I do not propose to disadvantage those members who do not have access electronic communication at this stage but rather spread the cost over all the members.

My proposal is as follows :-

In the first instance retain the membership cost as they are, $70.00 for all members. Assuming a membership of 400 then this would give the VCCA a return of 400 x $70 = $28,000 in annual subscriptions. If, as stated to “Mr Ferkesterker”, the cost of the magazine is $55.00 per annum. Then the actual operating cost for his $70 membership (minus the $55 for the Brass Notes) is $15.00.

If 50% of the members took their magazine by electronic means then the actual cost of membership would be reduced e.g.

Members 400 x $ 15.00 member operating cost = $ 6,000.

Magazine @ $55.00 x 200 members = $11,000

Magazine Electronic @ $0.00 x 200 members = $ nil

Total = $17,000

Net Saving of = $11,000

As can be seen by these figures an adoption rate of even just 50% to electronic media gives a huge saving to the club. This would effectively be the equivalent of raising the fees from $70 per annum to $97.50 per annum

Proposing the membership cost to rise from $70 to $80

would provide the VCCA with only an extra $4,000 in revenue which could easily be saved by just 73 people taking up the electronic version of Brass Notes.

As printing and postage costs continue to rise what will happen to the membership fees? Will they continue to go up and up?? Why not try and keep them static and the same for all members whether they receive the Brass Notes electronically or by post (for the few members that have no computer)?

There are other options that could be explored rather than just continuing to raise fees. I am just suggesting an obvious one.

Over time the printing of Brass Notes in A4 could be reduced in size, perhaps limited in colour and paper type to further reduce costs rather than increases in membership fees which should be, in my opinion, a last resort. If members belong to a number of different car clubs they may have to rationalise their memberships reducing the number of clubs they belong to if fee payments become an issue.

It is my considered opinion that the electronic media is the way forward for all Clubs not just the VCCA and as in the reply to Mr “Ferkensterker” the enjoyment of the VCCA is in the, Use, Restoration Preservation and the Social aspects incorporating Veteran cars.

John Washbourne (a concerned member)

Dear John,

Thank you for your letter.

You have provided an analysis of the club’s income and costs. Unfortunately, you have assumed 400 members, while the actual paying membership of the club is in fact 283 which means that the numbers you have presented are incorrect.

Far from the committee’s understanding of the email cost saving opportunities being a “sad case”, this issue has been exhaustively examined. As a result, last year we offered members an email-only option for Brass Notes including a $20 renewal incentive. The take-up rate was about 20%. Your proposal is to increase the cost of membership for the email-only members to $70 and to maintain the postal copy membership cost at the current $70. Along with this you have an expectation that the take-up of email-only option would somehow increase to 50%. Unfortunately, this is not plausible. The take-up rate would not increase by removing the incentive and charging email-only members the same as those who receive Brass Notes by post. It would have the opposite effect with the majority of members reverting to the postal option. Along with this would be a commensurate additional cost to the club.

In late 2014 the committee reviewed the format of Brass Notes, and a new-look edition was issued commencing in October of that year. We feel very satisfied with the Brass Notes as it now is. Anecdotal feedback has also been very positive, and we have no plans to change it substantively at this time.

Finally, you are concerned about the prospect of fee increases. I point out that it will have been 5 years since the club increased membership fees. This can hardly be characterised as “continuing to raise fees”. Clearly, there have been cost increases in that time and in spite of a number of significant cost saving initiatives undertaken, it is necessary to increase the fees for 16/17.
