Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 each year and is a day that has been set aside to bring about environmental awareness. There are lots of things we can do to celebrate Earth Day, but most importantly we should celebrate Earth Day everyday! April is one of my favorite months. For one, spring flowers are

blooming, the grass is greener and everything seems to be alive

Camper Orientation

All campers and a parent are required to attend one of the camper orientations before attending

4-H Camp. Orientations will be held at the Extension Office on Saturday, May 14 at 9:00 am or

on Tuesday, May 17 at 6:30 pm

Leather Belt Workshop There will be a representative from Tandy Leather hosting a workshop on Monday, May 2 from 3:30- 5:00 at the Extension Office. Participants will be tooling a leather belt. The cost is $10. Registration forms are available at the Extension Office. The deadline to register is Thursday, April 28.

Cloverbud Camp Cloverbud Camp will be held July 22-24 and open to all youth 5-8 years old. Cloverbud Camp is designed for young campers who are not ready for a week residential camping experience. The length of stay is two nights and three days and campers are required to have an adult attending with them. Campers will be able to participate in the traditional camp activities offered at 4-H camp including, fishing, crafts, cooking, swimming, nature and more! Cloverbud Camp is a great way for young campers to enjoy the fun of summer camp and their first overnight camping experience with kids all across West Kentucky. The cost is $100 per camper and $80 per adult. The cost includes meals, lodging, program cost and a t-shirt. Registration forms will be available soon!

Shooting Sports

The 4-H Sharp Shooters had their orientations for the 2016 season on Tuesday,

March 8 and 22 at the UKREC. We had 27 youth in attendance and are looking for-

ward to an exciting year. Practice will begin on Tuesday, April 19. We also had four

coaches that recently attended the West Kentucky Shooting Sports Certification in

March. Those attending were Annette Witherspoon, Ronnie Witherspoon,

Stephanie Hallum and teen leader, Matt Hallum.

Livestock Judging The Livestock Judging Team began meeting for the 2016 season on Wednesday, March 16. The team meets afterschool each Wednesday at the UKREC. We have an awesome group this year and are looking forward to a great year.

Teen Leadership Academy Our 4-H Teen Leadership Academy has completed their first year of educational trainings. TLA is composed of four middle school 4-H’ers from Caldwell, Crittenden, Livingston, Lyon and Trigg Counties. This program was designed to enhance leadership skills both inside and outside of 4-H. TLA members have been provided the opportunity to strengthen their leadership and communication skills and hopefully will allow them to make a positive impact on their communities. There will be a graduation ceremony held on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 at the Lee S. Jones Convention Center in Lyon Co. Participants from Caldwell County are Noah Peake, Emily Barrett, Emily Sherrill and Morgan Witherspoon.

Congratulations!

Our 2016 Achievement KY 4-H Award recipients are Madison Crider and Matt Hallum: Bronze

Award, Caitlyn Fralick and Madux Cummins: Silver Award & Robert Morgan: Gold Award. Each

of these will receive a partial scholarship attend Teen Conference this June and will be

recognized for their accomplishments and participation in 4-H.

Communications We have two 4-H’ers that will be competing in the Area Communications Contest on Friday, April 29 in Crittenden County. Ali Southard will be giving a speech in the 10 year old division and Samuel Bowers will be doing a foods demonstration in the Junior Division. Best of luck to these two!!

Tractor Supply Clover Campaign April 13-April 24 will be the TSC Clover Campaign. During this time TSC will be selling clovers for $1 with a portion of the proceeds coming back to the county. This is a great way to support the youth of our county and Kentucky 4-H. Come out to Tractor Supply during this time and help support our county 4-H program.

Aerospace Camp Aerospace Camp provides an opportunity for anyone that is in middle or high school that is interested in science, flight or space a chance to have some practical hands-on experience in aeronautics. Participants learn about the principles of flight, air traffic control and also have a chance to fly a plane with the help of a licensed flight instructor. Participants also learn about rocket science as well as build and launch a rocket. Aerospace Camp will be held June 6 and the cost is $110 which includes lunch, materials, t-shirt and flight expenses. The deadline to register is May 16. Anyone interested may contact the Extension office for registration forms.

Country Ham Project

Country Ham participants began curing their hams by salting them on February 6th and then again on

February 20th and finished up by rinsing them on March 19th . They will cure until July and that’s when

we will start to prepare for the state contest at the Kentucky State Fair. Leaders of this project are

Beth & Ronnie Drennan, owners of Broadbent B & B Foods in Kuttawa. Participants are: Dylan Adams,

Emily Barrett, Madison Crider, Gauge Hendon, Camden McGregor, Robert Morgan, Noah Peake, Avery

Ritchey, Emily Sherrill, Katy Trimble, Emma Koscho, Paycen Rogers, and Drake Travis.

4-H Teen Summit- The 2015 4-H Teen Summit was held March 10-12 at the 4-H Leadership Center in Jabez, KY. This event is a leadership conference open to middle school students. Those attending from Caldwell Co. were: Emily Barrett, Emily Sherrill, Noah Peake, Abby Griggs, Emilee Martin, Katy Trimble, Tylor Russell, Tyler Lowery, Eli Hunt, Noah Peake along with 4-H Agent, Rhonda Jewell. Teen Conference The 4-H Teen Conference is an annual 4-H event that occurs the second week of June in Lexington on the campus of the University of Kentucky. This event is open to any 4-H member that just completed the 9th -12th grade. There are many activities and events to participating in including workshops, fun-shops, college tours, dances, cook-outs, and much more! The dates for the 2016 Teen Conference are June 13-16. The cost of the conference is $250 with addition fees for trans-portation. Registration forms will be available at the Extension Office. **Achievement Award win-ners will receive a discount. Bronze =33.3%, Silver = 66.6% and Gold = 100%.
