TALLAHASSEE ELKS LODGE #937 BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS ANTLERS APRIL 2014 MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve our Lodge this year. I want to say a special thanks to all of you who have served as officers, committee members and especially to all the Elks and Elkett volunteers. You have all done so much this past year for the Lodge and Elkdom and I am proud to be an Elk. I am asking that you and other members again dedicate yourselves to give whatever time, talents and efforts you are able to make this the best lodge year possible. I am positive that with everyone’s help we can make this coming year a great one for the Lodge and Elkdom. I also ask that you give all the newly elected officers of the lodge your support and understanding as we undertake to make the Lodge better for all Members and their families. Keep in mind that we alone do not have all the answers and need your help with all the various tasks at hand this coming year. If you have suggestions please provide those to us so we may consider them. Our Club Manager, Julie Losey, has been working hard to improve the Club operations including increasing rentals in the Ballroom. She has been doing a great job and I hope you all will stop by and let her know that. Some of the things we have to pay special attention to this year include Membership Services. We are always looking for great new members who want to get involved in our many different activities and charity work. Carry an Application and some of our various literatures with you in your car, purse, briefcase, etc. Tell our Lodge story to others whenever you can and introduce them to the good works that Elks in Tallahassee do for others! Another challenge is keeping our Lodge Facilities in good operating condition. Please take care of the Lodge and if you see something that needs attention please tell one of the Lodge Officers or Club Manager. We continue to need your help with raising money for repairs to our Facilities, so a donation to our special fund is welcome. Please keep in mind we are a charitable organization as well as a Fraternal Order. If you are able, please consider giving a recurring contribution to the Elks National Foundation and the Harry Anna Trust Fund. Finally, I again thank you for the honor to serve you as your Exalted Ruler for giving me the opportunity to follow in my Father-in-Law, Roy Harvey’s footsteps. I will endeavor to serve you well in his honor. Elks Care, Elks Share! Wayne Harrell FROM THE SECRETARY March is always busy with dues being paid, posted, and membership cards being printed. I will be posting dues as they come in and get new cards in the mail as quick as I can. If a spouse/identification card is needed, let me know; if you are missing a sticker on your card, let me know. February 19th Drawing for Whole LOTTO Love

Congratulations to Rob Ledig! The drawing was held during a break at the February 19th Bingo games. Thanks to all who participated in this fund raiser for the Tallahassee Lodge and to support the endorsed 2015 Florida State Elks Association President - Carl Ledig.

March 1st & 2nd Battle Of Natural Bridge Reenactment Elk and Elkett Volunteers are the greatest! The Volunteers for this year’s Battle of Natural Bridge Event were exceptional. Over 30 Volunteers worked over many days to plan and execute those plans to make this the best Natural Bridge event to date. We had great weather both days and we sold out of much of our food and all our drinks at the event. Thanks to all of those volunteers and I hope you all will be ready for next year which will be the 150th Anniversary of the Battle and is planned to be bigger and better! (See Photos on Page 7)

March 7th and 8th Operation Prom Dress The Junior League of Tallahassee was excited to host Operation Prom Dress on the weekend of March 7th and 8th. This is the first year the event was held at the Tallahassee Elks Lodge and JLT is thrilled to have established this partnership with such a wonderful organization. Operation Prom Dress is an event unlike no other where local and surrounding county teens are able to “shop” for their dream prom dress, shoes, and accessories – all at no charge. Friday, March 7th was reserved for a private shopping event for the students of Gretchen Everhart, where they were able to have first selection on all the wonderful dresses. The Elks Lodge also provided lunch for all students and staff members, with Junior League members volunteering as servers. On Saturday, March 8th, the event was open to any local and surrounding teens who would like to "shop" for prom dresses. The event was attended by over 225 teens that had the opportunity to "shop" from 1300 prom dresses. Operation Prom Dress was a success this year because of the hard work of volunteers and the relationship established with the Elks Lodge. JLT hopes to continue this partnership to have a bigger and better event in 2015!

March 13th GREAT COOKIE CAPER As an Elk it gives me so much pride to do things for men and women that keep our country safe. On the 13th of March we were asked to take part in the Great Cookie Caper at the 83rd National Guard Command Post. That is the Girl Scouts of Troops 665, Molly Akin’s Troop and 577, Mary Steverson’s Troop. They raised the money to buy 156 boxes of cookies and donate them for the men and women that are overseas just to say a little thanks -- if that is not enough, look at the smiles in the photos of the girl scouts - it says it all. As a representative of our Lodge it is my honor to mail the cookies to them overseas, I put thank you cards in the boxes the scouts made and some pictures of our good time with the Guard. Thank you Karla, Don, Col. Mohr and Mary Anna for joining me.

March 22nd Paint Day At The Lodge Many thanks to Rick Peckham, Karla Jones, Karen Peek, Tom Walden, Wayne Harrell, Don Dobson, Harry Symons, Ron Brown, and Bob Thorburn for coming out in their paint-ready duds to paint the ballroom! Take a look and let us know what you think.

Denise Mick Elks National Foundation

Thank you to all of you who contributed to the Elks National Foundation this past Lodge year. Making our Per Capita goal allowed us to obtain a grant this year to help send the kids from Gretchen Everhart School to the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla again last year. At the last report we were 20th in the State in donations and 1st in the North District. If you have not contributed before, then you can begin in this new Lodge Year. Meeting our Per Capita goal will again open up opportunities to earn grants for our projects in the community this year. The earlier the better, so if you will make an effort to make a donation this year early. See any Officer for more information on how to donate!

MANAGER’S NOTES

☺ Will be offering many fundraisers in the upcoming months as we welcome spring and the warm temps & sunny days.

☺ Need a Volunteer Cooking Crew for 1 Sunday a month. Please contact the Lodge or Club Manager.

☺ Will be postponing the CPR Certification Classes scheduled to be held Monday, April 28th and Tuesday, April 29th due to scheduling conflict. Hopefully, this will be rescheduled in the upcoming months.
