Historic 10Ft Skiffs NewsTaree Regatta ― 29th & 30th March
With a lot of interest from sailors & spectators, the skiffs & crew rigged early Saturday in very light conditions in anticipation of a 2:00pm start. An 8 knot breeze allowed a South West course set & the start on time saw 7 skiffs awaywith their biggest rigs on a 4 lap race from the bridge to Dumaresq Island & return.
A strong ebb tide in the early stage saw the fleetbunch up as the early starters sailed into a fading breeze. Past Manning River VS Champion, Michael Northam, used his guile to put Kismet into the lead in the second lap, allowing him to be first to meet a new fresher southerly breeze at the top of the course & extend his lead. Ramona II sailed really well with local Doug Milligan on sheet & ex-Taree sail maker Craig Hunter in the bow pursued the leader. They had given Kismet 2 minutes at the start & hung on to 2nd place as the breeze faded& the race control elected to shorten the race to 3 laps.
These 2 finished in that order off the club, Kismet 1 minute ahead of Ramona II with the fast closing low mark skiff Irene M closing on them another, 2 mins behind. The crew of Kismet took the $50 dollar 1st place sweep purse & the Ramona II skipper put his 2nd place $20 dollars on the bar where a great night was had by all, thanks to the terrific hospitality of the local sailors & partners who provided theevening BBQ & supper with great atmosphere in the Boatshed.
Sunday saw the skiffs rigging early as the breeze steadied from the south at 10 knots.
With the Race control officials working to get the best for the fleet a 1:15 pm scratch start was notified for a 3 lap similar but longer course to Saturday’s. 7 skiffs faced the starter with big rigs, Ramona II leading the fleet to Dumaresq Island rounding the first mark ahead of arch rival Miss Marlenewith locals Adam Cause, Richard & JeremyDodds sailing the very competitive Uncle Fred well in the mix. Big spinnakers were set for the tight runs back up the river for this race with the spectators at the club getting a firsthand view as the crews handled their over canvassed skiffs to round the mark off the bridge.
Ramona II continued to dominate as the race progressed, building on their momentum from Saturday’s effort. Miss Marlene challenged but blew their back stay on the last kite run & dropped their spinnaker. Kismet & Merle sailed well to push through the fleet on the spinnaker legsshowing experience in getting the best fromtheir skiff in these testing conditions. Ramona II taking the winners gun from Miss Marlene followed by Merle & Kismet in a well fought race to the finish.
The Taree Cup went to Ramona II & crew for a very well sailed race leading from start to finish with the handicap winner the local lads in Uncle Fred bringing her home 3 minutes behind the winner for a great finish to their series. The 2 race Manning River Championship was won by Ramona II, runner up Kismet & the locals in Uncle Fred finishing on the podium for 3rd.
A great time was had by all the competitors& their supporters with a number of very enthusiastic spectators in the rigging area interested in these historic wooden skiffs. The Aquatic Club Sailing committee provided a very smoothly run competition with goods starts & appropriately shortenedcourse on the Saturday as the breeze faded.
All agree that Taree was a great venue for these skiffs with the Club extending an invitation the AHSSA for another event or an annual regatta.

Historic 18s @ The Sydney Flying SquadronSpring, Summer & Autumn Pointscore
The Historic 18ft skiffs have had a hectic season a the Sydney Flying Squadron, with a variety of breezes ranging from big blows to drifters. All pointscores, as well as the yearly have been closely contested thanks to the keeness and skill of the crews.
The Spring Pointscore was won by Aberdare (John Winning) while the Summer Pointscore wastaken out by Peter Legrove in Tangalooma. At the time of writing, with one heat left in the Autumn Pointscore, Yendys leads The Mistake by 5 points with a further 2 points back to Top Weight. The pleasing aspect is that most races had at least 7 starters throughout the season. Perhaps during the winter more sailors can be found for the remaining skiffs in the shed.
A look through the number of races sailed shows the regular starters who have thrilled the crowds on the spectator ferry, while having a whale of a time themselves.
Congratulations also go to Aberdare who backed up the Spring Pointscore by winning the GallopingGhost Trophy in January and the Club Championship
