Winter has not really made any significant appearance this year, although now that it is Spring we finally have temperatures cooling off! Easter is almost as late as it can be on the calendar this year, April 20, which seems like such a long way off still and almost makes our Lenten experience drag on even though it is still the standard 46 days (40 days of Lent plus 6 Sundays). And so we wait this year for Easter. Why must we wait so long this year for Easter? Blame it on the moon! Easter and the associated Christian festivals including Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Pentecost are not fixed dates on the calendar but instead are set according to the vernal or March Equinox which is traditionally celebrated as the first day of Spring. The Spring Equinox generally falls around March 21 as the day with approximately equal time of daylight and night. Biblical tradition holds that Jesus’ death and resurrection occurred around the time of the Jewish Passover, which was celebrated on the first full moon following the vernal or Spring Equinox. Henceforth the date of Easter has been tied to the Jewish festival of Passover and the lunar calendar. Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal or Spring Equinox. Crazy calculations but true. As we wait for Easter this year it reminds me how often we are required to wait in life especially when we are looking forward to a celebration or just want to get on with things. And yet we must wait. Waiting often seems so pointless especially if we are anxious about something. Often in scripture we are instructed to “wait for the Lord” and in time we will see how our faith and relationship with God has influenced our lives for good. In the New Revised Standard version of the Bible, Psalm 27:13-14 declares, “I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” This seems to suggest that waiting is passive as if we are holding in a place of expectation and hoping that something will happen soon. But what if we change the preposition “for” and replace it with “on”? The old King James Bible declares the same Psalm 27:14 this way, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” (continued on page 2)

Everything seems so late thisyear, causing us to wait. Winter has notreally made any significant appearancethis year, although now that it is Springwe finally have temperatures cooling off!Easter is almost as late as it can be onthe calendar this year, April 20, whichseems like such a long way off still andalmost makes our Lenten experiencedrag on even though it is still thestandard 46 days (40 days of Lent plus 6Sundays). And so we wait this year forEaster.

Why must we wait so long thisyear for Easter? Blame it on the moon!Easter and the associated Christianfestivals including Ash Wednesday, PalmSunday, Good Friday, and Pentecost arenot fixed dates on the calendar butinstead are set according to the vernal orMarch Equinox which is traditionallycelebrated as the first day of Spring. (Lissa’s pondering continued from front page)

The alternative definition of “wait” is to serve. What if in our waiting we were not just holding in placebut serving the Lord as well, waiting not just for the Lord but on the Lord. My experience tells me that it is in thewaiting on the Lord while we are waiting for the Lord that our hearts are strengthened and we find courage. It isin our service to God through prayers and worship and singing and fellowship that we are encouraged and filledwith hope. It is in our service to others, to our family, our friends and neighbors and those in need that we findour hearts filled with compassion, joy and gratitude.

So, instead of just holding in place while we are waiting for Easter this year, perhaps we can do some wait-ing as well. Who is out there on the fringes that need to be waited upon? What service can we provide to thoseclosest to us and even those far away? In what ways can we wait on the Lord in the next several weeks as we pre-pare for our Easter celebration? You are invited to share your “waiting” ideas or experiences on our church Face-book page or send us an email at [email protected]. Maybe your experience will be an inspiration for oth-ers.

In the King James Version, the prophet Isaiah reminds us, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renewtheir strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, andnot faint.” Let’s get out there and wait!

Your Facilities Committee at work! The facilities committee, along with many goodhearted volunteers, has been very busy the past 2 months…

We now have a new home for our golf cart, along with a new storage area. On February 22 about twentyvolunteers, led by the facilities committee, built the new sheds in our backyard that now house the cart and alsoprovide storage for the church. We were able to nearly complete the sheds in that one day. Alan Smith came backa few days that following week and finished the roof. A few items, sealing the bottom of the sheds, paint andelectrical still need to be completed. But our back patio is no longer a temporary storage area. Thank you to allwho helped.

Our new sound system is now, finally, in the process of beinginstalled. We are hoping that by the time you read this article, you will alreadyhave heard the new system. Many people have worked on this project forseveral YEARS! And it is finally happening. We should acknowledge someof those volunteers: Roger Behle, Leslie Berger, Verna Horton and of course,Ginger Purvis. Thanks to all of you.

Of course there are other jobs that keep us busy…roof leaks, plumbing issues, light bulbs to be changed.

Finally, we should also acknowledge our Scout Troop. Under theguidance of Mary Byrne and Marty Writer, they have been busy around ourcampus working on projects none of the rest of us care to do, such replacingthe wooden stairs at the back of our property. And their assistance haulingthe lumber to the backyard for the golf cart shed was invaluable. They evenlearned some construction techniques while helping to build the newstorage sheds. Thank you scouts!

Late Breaking News:

This just in…Canyon Hills Presbyterian Church unveils their new sound system. Yes, it is true. Youshould no longer have to ask, “What did Lissa just say?”, “Is that feedback or does Roger’s guitar need tuning?” orchoir members… “Is he actually playing the piano?”

There are a few items still to be completed, Lissa’s mike is on backorder and should be in next week, a newdesk is needed for the mixing console and of course our own “volunteer sound engineers” are being trained.Patience will still be needed as we learn how to use the equipment.

There are many people that need to be acknowledged, but for fear I might leave someone out, (especiallysince I just got involved in this project at the first of the year), I’d just like to say thank you to all those involved…Thank you!

The 2014 Per Capita is $27.62 per member from our church. You are probably thinking WHAT! Andwhat does this money do and where does it go?What does it do:Mission: Evangelism, Medical, Education and Advocacy around the world.Creating: New Worshipping Fellowships and camp opportunities for youth to engage in short term mission work.Resources: Materials for training, developing and preparation for church officers, youth ministries and candidatesfor ministries.New Churches: New church development or renovate and expand older ones.Training: Support people, pastoral care people and all other areas for church life.Financial: Provide help in areas of investment and stewardship for churches.Response: Disaster Assistance with training for members and volunteers for all types of emergencies.

IT TAKES CHPC (and FRIENDS)Many people have remarked how meaningful and special the memorial service and reception for MattDavis was. It was a real tribute to Matt and a sign of our love and support for him and his family.

This is what made it happen:A Pastor who reminded us of God’s love and care at our time of lossA Guest pastor who shared his memories and thoughts about MattOur Chancel choir, Godsend, a community Master Chorale, and the gospel choir of New Hope who lenttheir voices in praise, celebration and provided spiritual messages in song.Matt’s family members who shared their memories of Matt and provided us with a greater knowledge ofthe many facets of Matt’s life. The ushers who distributed the programs, greeted our guests and provided the golf cart transportation. The “chauffeur” service which provided transportation between the church and El Rancho Jr. High. The over 18 volunteers who baked a variety of wonderful cookies, breads or cakes.he special people who made and donated the delicious salads and fruit platters. The women who bought the beautiful red roses and arranged the lovely centerpieces. The women who ordered the sandwiches at Costco and delivered them Saturday morning. The Men’s Breakfast crew who set-up the tables and chairs in the Fellowship Hall; the Outreach crew whodid it again. (Communication glitch)The deacons and others who set-up, served and cleaned up after the reception. The High School Group who put the tables and chairs away on Sunday night. The many, many who attended the service. This is what made the memorial service and the reception so special. This is CHPC – working and serving together to show God’s love. Worship and MusicFinding Relevance in Worship- Part 2- Let the Children Come to Me

It was during our Ash Wednesday service when Bill turned to me and said, “There was a reason I cametonight.” I agreed. We both learned something new that night.

What did we learn? There are 46 days of Lent; 6 of which celebrate Sunday. On these Sundays, the time to“give up” or “replace” something is waived. You see, Lissa brought new meaning to this reflective time in ourchurch. It got through to me. It was an “aha” moment for Bill. The message gave relevance to the season of lent. And it was done in a children’s sermon.

We do a lot of activities with the children of our church. But here are some ways, we the church, give ourfuture a chance to find relevance in worship:

Curiosity – Children love to ask the question “why”. It is a natural behavior for them. When we adultsbecome curious about our faith, our children benefit. Curiosity becomes a breeding ground for discovery, leading children and adults to many wonderful conversations. Our Sunday school hour is one way we nur-ture this area of growth for our children. Our “patio” time is another way we can connect with children.Understanding- Few things awe an adult, but to a child, the world is an “awe” some place! Our Worshipand Music committee has been dedicating time before worship to hand out activity packets to children ofall ages, so they can understand His awesome presence in their lives. Spending time in our sanctuary, givesour children the chance to experience God in a safe and loving environment.Recognition – What better way to recognize children than by experiencing them! Providing a children’sstory in worship each week exemplifies how precious these little ones are to us. In return, they reward uswith their anecdotes, and sober us with life lessons. They create teachable moments for all ages.Music is another way we recognize these children and on Palm Sunday our children will wave palms andsing for our congregation.Jesus admonished the crowd by allowing the children “to come unto me”. He saw them as the future of hisministry. He responded to their openness to listen to The Word with loving arms. He knew that by recog-nizing children, we would recognize the “child” within our own hearts.

May these little ones help us remember that we are all Children of God. Leslie

Easter Lilies: Each year, for our Easter Worship celebration, lilies decorate our sanctuary as areminder of the new life brought forward by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If you would like to contribute to our Easter Lily fund, please do so by indicating on theregistration form on Sunday mornings along with your check of $9 per plant. You can also mail ordrop by the church office with your request. The deadline is Sunday, April 13th at noon.

Giving Children Hope: Help us support those in need! There are several ways:1. Donate to the food drive. (The regular schedule for collections will be on Communion Sundays, and

the following Sunday. The committee will be notified by GCH which food items are needed on a monthlybasis.) The items requested for the next food drive are BREAKFAST ITEMS -cereal, oatmeal, granola bars,condensed/evaporated milk.

2. Volunteer at Giving Children Hope. We are taking sign-ups for the second Thursday of eachmonth. There is a morning shift (9-12), and an afternoon (1-4). To signup, contact [email protected]. He will also be available for signups after service.
