DESCRIPTION
The May edition of the Joyful Noise Newsletter. A publication of Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church.
Citation preview
The Joyful Noise Our Session meetings always end with prayers by all the elders. Some prayers have to do with concerns that stretch far beyond the doors of the church. Other prayers are as close and intimate as what happened at that meeting. Regardless of subject matter, each prayer is written on a 3X5 note card, then passed to someone else. This reduces anxiety that “I don’t pray well in public.” It also means that we all pray with and for each other. At the March Session meeting, many prayers expressed gratitude, hope, and responsibility toward our newest members. They also voiced great apprecia-tion for the honesty with which those members opened their souls to us – as we all strive to do in faith. Before introducing the new members, I want to share those prayers (combined into one):
Dear God: Thank you for blessing us with vibrant new members, both adults
and children. They bring excitement and possibilities, gifts and talents, enthusiasm
and faith to share in this faith community. It is amazing to celebrate our 85th anni-
versary with them, knowing we also have stories, compassion, and love from those
who came before us but are no longer here.
Help us continue to welcome these new members, guiding and walking with
them on their faith journey. Help us be fertile soil for their spiritual roots. Give us
courage to be as forthcoming in our faith as they are with us – “pass it on!” And
let us extend the hand of Christian fellowship to everyone we meet.
Together, may we know we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who
love us, guide us, and support us in faith. Amen.
This is our prayer for the whole church, but particularly for the following persons we most recently welcomed: Bob & Mary Wall join us by transfer from another church. They met 37 years ago while volunteering, and con-tinue to share their time and talents generously, while wanting to soak in as much of the faith as they can. Sorrell & Steve Poelzer are recently married. Steve grew up in church and sees God in many places. Sorrell was baptized on Easter, 2011 after a lengthy search for faith and meaning. Elisabeth & Tim Kohls met in Europe (she’s from Austria). Their son Timo is active in gymnastics. In addition to raising him in love, they express faith by being thankful for simple things (Tim) and by not being afraid to ask good questions (Elisabeth). Jeremy & Larka Keila, with sons Finnian and Flint, first heard about the church from Nancy Moon. Jeremy and the boys will be baptized here. Larka has had a variety of church experiences and is eager for another good experience with us. Briana Bermudez & David Horn will marry in July. His prayers mostly express thanks for all of God’s gifts. Her life has been one of service to others, including a young sister, HIV/AIDS patients in Africa, and cancer patients in Milwaukee. See the pictures of our New Members on page 3. Please greet them when you see them and make them feel welcome!

Staff Changes in the Church Office On April 12, Jody Jossie submitted her letter of res-ignation to Jim Rand and the Personnel Commit-tee. The Session accepted that resignation, with regret, on April 23. Jody began her employment at the church in Feb-ruary 2009 and has brought skill, dedication, warmth, creativity, reliability and careful oversight to the office functions. Above all, from the begin-
ning, she saw her work as a calling from God – not just a job. The Personnel Committee is making plans for the transition, as Jody wraps up tasks already in pro-cess, and as the search for the new Office Manag-er moves forward. We will keep you posted. We wish the best for Jody and her family, and will miss her. If you stop in the church office in the near future, please be sure to let her know how much you appreciate all she has done!
Session Meeting Notes - March 26, 2012
Submitted by Dottie Anderson, Clerk of Session
The Session of Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church met for its regular meeting at 7:00 p.m.
A good portion of the Session Meeting was dedicated to examining and welcoming our new members into the fellowship of the church: Briana Bermudez, David Horn, Elizabeth and Tim Kohls with their son Timo, Steve and Sorrel Poelzer, and Bob and Mary Wall. Jeremy and Larka Keila and their children Finnian and Flint met with the Session on April 1, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. All these new members were recognized by the congregation at the 10:30 a.m. worship service, April 1, 2012. Actions taken by Session:
Thanked John Krugler and his committee for successfully directing the church’s 85th Anniversary celebration. Approved changes made to the membership rolls. Approved a request from Building and Grounds to place a sign that states: “No Trespassing. Violators will be prosecuted” near the fire escape on the back east side of the church building . This should deter unauthor-ized persons from climbing onto the church roof.
Committee Announcements:
Adult/Christian Education: Synod School 2012 will be held July 22-27 at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa. The theme is “Singing the Lord’s Song in a Strange Land.” There are stimulating classes and creative activities for all ages. Membership: A new mentorship program is being created to help new members feel welcome and a part of the church. “The Ambassador Program” is a name being considered for the new program. All church members are encouraged to participate when called upon.
A warm smile, a friendly face, an extended hand welcoming us to church each Sunday. Greeters are so cher-ished at WPC. Often we have children greeting with their Sunday School classmates, families and friends taking turns to welcome one another as we gather to worship.
There are so many members at WPC who are interested in helping out, but, with so much going on, we often for-get to sign up! That’s why the Worship Committee is looking for 10-12 individuals who would be willing to help schedule greeters by signing up to coordinate just one month, please contact Heidi Hudson-Mairet ([email protected] or 259-0315.)
Thank you for extending your hand in this very important aspect of worship.

GHANA PARTNERSHIP FUND RAISING EVENT
The Mission Committee is sponsoring a Ghanaian lunch and program following the 10:30 service on May 20th. A Ghanaian lunch including Groundnut Soup with rice or Banku, fried plantain, Jollif Rice, tropical fruit and tropical juices will be served. Following the lunch, members of the 2011 Delegation to Ghana will discuss their two plus week adventure in Milwaukee Presbytery's partner presbytery and other parts of southern Ghana. The lunch will be a benefit event, with the proceeds going to the Delegation Hosting Fund. If all five proposed delegates from Ghana are granted visas to travel to the U.S., the Presbytery needs an additional $7,000 for the Hosting Fund. The Delegation from Ghana is scheduled to visit Milwaukee Presbytery from August 27 to September 23. Sign-up in the gathering space.

Sunday School in April Denise Fried, Administrator of Christian Education
In April we talked about the anticipation of Palm Sunday, the grief of Good Friday and the joy of Easter in our combined Sunday School class on Palm Sunday. After Easter the les-sons focus on Jesus’ appearances to the disciples to reassure them that he would always be
with them and to challenge them to take his good news to the world. Lessons in May pick up that narrative and follow the disciples’ actions to meet the challenge.
On the first Sunday of the month the focus scripture is Acts 8:26–40. In this passage Philip the Evangelist meets an Ethiopian on the road to Gaza. The Ethiopian is reading text from the prophet Isaiah while traveling in his chariot. Rather than shying away from the foreigner, Philip runs alongside the chariot and asks the man if he understands what he is reading. This simple, engaging question opens the door for Philip to tell the man of the good news of Jesus Christ. Our kids will explore this lesson in reaching out without prejudice in God’s universal love, and how they might do the same in their own lives.
On May 13 Jesus emphasizes the importance of friendship. In John 15:9-17 he is preparing his disciples to take his message to the world, but first he tells them that he loves them, they are his chosen and they are his friends; and he commands that they love one another. How powerful! Our kids will talk about the roles that generosity, trust and responsibility play in the loving friendship that Jesus describes. What will they discover about living their own friendly lives in God’s community of faith and hope?
The final formal lesson of May finds Peter in front of a crowd of about one hundred twenty “believers,” raising the awkward question of replacing Judas (Acts 1:15-17, 21-26). To be faithful to the roots of Judaism they needed to restore the structure of twelve disciples to reflect the twelve tribes of Israel. To meet the chal-lenge of ministry they needed to rebuild trust. It must have taken incredible trust in each other and in God to find the courage necessary to embark on their ministries. What a great passage for our kids to consider.
The final Sunday of May we don’t have Sunday School but it’s Pentecost! It’s hard to pass up this amazing story that signals the beginning of the outward ministry. For families who want to pursue the lesson on their own, the focus scripture is in Acts 2:1-21. The previous lessons in May of reaching out, and of love and friendship and trust, all come together in the story of the violent wind that filled the house, the “divided tongues, as of fire” and the sudden ability to speak other languages, as given by the Spirit. The curriculum asks - “Where do you experience God’s spirit in your life? Where is God calling you to proclaim the spirit of truth?” You don’t need any special knowledge or training to spend some time talking with your family about these questions. Enjoy a lively discussion!

May 6 - Organize Your Personal Records Phyllis Tubesing, who has a thirty year career in ac-counting, finance, budgeting and strategic planning , will help us organize our key personal and financial records. She will discuss recommended documents: wills, durable power of attorney, power of attorney for health care and living wills. Walk-thru work sheets will be available. May 13 & 20 - When Your World Changes Presenter: Judith L. Holmes-Jensen, M-Div, BCC May 13 - Death & Grief: Part 1
When a family experiences a death, the whole family grieves and changes. Children have unique responses
to loss based on development, family experience, and the type of loss. We will discuss the way chil-dren perceive death, ways of talk-ing about grief and death, and some strategies on coping.
May 20 - Death & Grief: Part 2 Death changes the way a family functions, copes, and grows. Depending upon the type of loss, how it oc-curred, and the personalities of the family members, this experience can bring a family closer or tear them apart. This program will look at death, grief, mourning and coping from a family system perspective. Ways of laying down a foundation for coping with death prior to loss will be discussed.

SUMMER PLANS!
Vacation Bible School June 18 – 22, 9:00am - Noon
Think about all of the Bible stories that feature water. Noah and the Great Flood. John’s baptism of Jesus. Jesus’ call to Peter and his friends to “fish for people.” We’re going to explore these stories and more at our VBS Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep With God! The kids are grouped by age and led by "Crew Members" to each of the areas - arts and crafts, music, story, recreation and snacks. We welcome children who turned three by 9/2011 through children who just finished 5th grade. We really appreciate older kids as volunteers! We have a new, modern approach to registration! Go to our VBS website http://overboard.cokesburyvbs.com/wpc to register your child and to sign up to volunteer. (Your information will go to the WPC Christian Educa-tion office. We’ll also have registration forms in the Gathering Space.) The kids can also preview some of the songs for this exciting program on that website. The activity fee is $25.00 for each child. Please make checks payable to Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church and indicate VBS on the memo line. You can drop off a check any time before VBS begins or on the first day. Can’t wait!
Are you making plans for the kids or the whole family for the summer? Pilgrim Center/Moon Beach offers a wide variety of summer camp options for kids and families, and adult retreats throughout the year. Stronghold also offers some great themed camps for the kids. Scholarships are available through the Presbytery. Scholarship applications are due by May 10, and through the WPC Christian Educa-tion office. Camp catalogs and scholarship forms are in the Gathering Space.
For a week of Presbyterian immersion this summer go to Synod School, July 22-27 at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa. Synod School is a learning and enrichment ex-perience designed for laity and clergy, individuals and families. This year’s theme is Sing-ing the Lord’s Song in A Strange Land. Expand your horizons. Study everything from for-giveness or spirituality to the art of smoking meat or qigong! For more information, talk with Laura. She will be leading #20 Grown-up Faith in Children’s Literature and Bill Hum-phreys will lead #36 God at the Box Office. Sounds interesting!
May 27, Pentecost Sunday, we begin the summer schedule with worship at 9:30, and no Sunday School. The next Sunday, June 3, we worship at 9:30AM but we do have Sunday School, the final class for the kids from 10:40 – 11:30AM.

QUILTERS’ QUEST We hope you have been enjoying the monthly display of lap quilt sets designed and sewn by our various members since February of this year. April’s lap quilt was the “Four Inch Square Floral” by Mary Alzalde. For the month of May, “Stepping Up” by Trudy Thompson is featured. “Raspberry Delight” is our June quilt featuring the work of Dee Krugler and will be displayed late in May. Our desire is for our Congregation to not only view the lap quilts, but have an oppor-tunity to purchase the first five quilt sets that have been displayed February through June. To do this, we are planning a “SILENT AUCTION” for the weeks of Sunday, May 27 and Sunday, June 3. The winners will be presented the quilts at the Church Picnic June 3. If you’re unable to attend the picnic, you will be notified by telephone. Proceeds will go toward our sewing machine maintenance. Watch for our display and opportunity to bid on your favorites in the Gathering Space
next to the Coffee Hour table the week of May 27 and June 3.
We’ll meet in May on the 3rd from 10am-2pm. Hope to see you there!

On May 27th We Will Receive the Pentecost Offering The PCUSA Pentecost Offering, the fourth in the PCUSA’s yearly giving cycle, is unique in that congregations direct 40 percent of what they receive for ministries which benefit children at risk. Last year, we were able to give $580 to the Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee. The remainder of the Pentecost Offering supports mission through Child Advocacy (10 percent), Youth Ministry (25 percent), and Young Adult Volunteer opportunities (25 percent). Please help us celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit by making a difference in the lives of the children and youth who will carry that Holy Spirit into the future. Please give generously! First Quarter Giving Statements were sent out in April. Please check them for accuracy. Please note that revised pledges, due to the payoff of the building loan, will not appear on your state-ment until Second Quarter. Pentecost Worship Note:
Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and is sometimes described as the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy
Spirit. Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated fifty days after Easter. This year, Pentecost is observed on May 27th. Please join us in wearing red, the color used to symbolize the Holy Spirit, on Pentecost Sunday.

We will use your contribution to share the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ . Southminster Presbyterian Youth Thank you each and everyone for the “hello” card and the Easter card. Lorraine Zabel Thanks a million for the Easter lily, I really appreciated it. Laverne Charlson On behalf of the board, staff, and especially those we serve at the Guest House of Milwaukee, thank you for your generous product donation collected for Undies Sunday. Remember your mother on
Sunday, May 13th!
My heartfelt thanks to WPC for the beautiful Easter tulip. To Barb & Jeff Homar I give my loving thank-you for deliv-ering it and for the wonderful gift of renewing our friend-ship or many years. I feel so blessed as I send my best wishes to all for a great summer. Audree Gronback Thank you for all you do. Lucille Johnson Many thanks for the lovely blue hydrangea that was deliv-ered to me on Easter Sunday by Chris Wolf. It is a cheer-ful and fragrant addition to my new apartment. Cathy Caughey Thank you for the Easter card while away, it was greatly appreciated. Lyle & Faith Rhodes Thank you for allowing us to have our grandsons baptized and for our renewal ceremony. Greg & Jackie Williams During Older Americans Month, Greater Tosa Interfaith would like to thank WPC for your participation in our pro-gram this past year. Helping our older neighbors is such an important ministry. We appreciate your ongoing finan-cial support as we try and keep those individuals connect-ed to a caring community. We would like to especially thank the volunteers from your congregation who served in the past year: Norma Fernhaber and Bill Nelson. Diane Euting, GTI Program Director Thank you for the wonderful Easter card filled with so many names! And I thank the church for a card on my birthday too. This makes me very happy to belong to this church. I am enjoying my warm days in Sun City, AZ. I will return May 30th. Margaret Niebruegge

Church Picnic - Sunday, June 3rd
Grab your lawn chairs, sunscreen, and appetites! It’s time for the annual WPC Picnic! Mark your calendars for the annual church picnic on June 3 following the education hour. Kick off the summer with delicious food, a chance to get to know fellow members, and let the kids run. A free will offering will be held to support the work of the Fellowship Committee. Watch for the sign-up sheet in the Gath-ering Space and details to come in the weekly bulletins.
Spiritual Formation Corner
At a loss for how to pray? What to "say"? Check on the church's website, http://www.tosapres.com!
On the front page, click on the link to the daily lectionary readings. You will be led to the complete text of scripture to read prayerfully as well as a daily meditation for your use.
Additionally, you can either click on the Facebook button at the top of our webpage or go to http://gamc.pcusa.org/yearbook to see what part of our PCUSA mission we are praying for that day.
You may find yourself carrying with you prayers for a church in Africa, or the Seattle Presbytery, or a mis-sion partner in the Middle East. Consider this your ministry of prayer.
If you do not use the computer, you may ask at church for a copy of the Mission Yearbook where all these resources can be found. In peace, Laura
